Investigation of Genetic Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Prospective Cohort Study
HealthyCoronary Disease2 moreCardiovascular disease is a complex multifactorial and polygenic disorder that is thought to result from an interaction between a person's genetic make up and various environmental factors. Although many studies have revealed that several genetic variants increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, the results of these studies remain controversial. The purpose of this study is to identify polymorphisms that confer susceptibility to cardiovascular disease and to clarify the adequacy of reported susceptibility gene polymorphisms. To complete this purpose, we will prospectively study over 5,000 local residents in whom relationship between these polymorphisms and occurrence of cardiovascular disease over 5 years.
Gene Mutations in Secondary Pulmonary Hypertension
Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary HypertensionAs a pulmonary hypertension center, we have created a database that prospectively tracks patients with different forms of secondary pulmonary hypertension. Records include genetic analysis, and clinical and hemodynamic profiles.

Long Study - Longitudinal Thrombosis in End Stage Renal Disease
End Stage Renal DiseaseThrombosis2 moreThe primary focus of this study is to collect information through diagnostic testing, blood sample analysis and patient data collection on patients starting hemodialysis to determine risk and preventative factors of bleeding and clotting events.
Falls in Stroke Patients After Hospital Discharge: Prevalence and Risk Factors
StrokeThe purposes of this study are: (1) to investigate the incidence and causes of falls of stroke patients residing in Taipei City and Taipei county after their discharge from the National Taiwan University Hospital, (2) to investigate the relationship between clinical manifestations of stroke patients before their hospital discharge and their incidence of falls after hospital discharge, and (3) to identify the risk factors for stroke patients who frequently fall after hospital discharge.
The Early High Risk Period for Patients With Heart Failure
Heart FailureCongestiveMany people with heart failure either die or are admitted to the hospital in the first few months after the condition is diagnosed. The reasons for this are currently unclear- but may be due to worsening heart failure or other medical conditions such as angina, heart attack or sudden electrical problems of the heart. The investigators propose to recruit and follow-up 450 people, with a new diagnosis of heart failure for a minimum of six months in a multi-centre observational study at two hospital sites: The Hillingdon (Uxbridge) and The Conquest (Hastings) hospitals. The total study duration will be two years. People will be recruited after a diagnosis of heart failure is made and the study will assess reasons for death or admission to hospital and the psychological impact of the condition on both patients and their carers. This is an observational study and no change will be made to patients' conventional treatment. Hypotheses: The high mortality and hospitalisation rate in the early period after diagnosis of heart failure is related to progressive pump failure; or The high mortality in the early period after the diagnosis of heart failure is related to co-morbid events- principally major coronary events such as myocardial infarction or acute coronary syndrome. This research should help to identify ways of improving the outlook for people with newly diagnosed heart failure. The analysis of the data generated by this study will be supervised by a statistician. Clinical and demographic data will be described using mean + standard deviation, for continuous variables, and absolute numbers and percentages for categorical variables. Group differences will be examined by t-tests for continuous variables and Chi-square (x2) test for categorical variables. Survival will be reported in terms of Kaplan-Meier curves with differences analysed by Cox proportional hazards.
Risk Indicators in Patients With Ventricular Fibrillation During Acute Myocardial Infarction
Acute Myocardial InfarctionSudden Cardiac DeathSudden cardiac death is in most cases triggered by ischemia-related ventricular tachyarrhythmias and accounts for 50% of deaths from cardiovascular disease in developed countries. Chronic elevation of indicators of coagulation activation has been found in patients with coronary heart disease , but a role of coagulation activation and proinflammatory state as a potential risk factor for ventricular fibrillation (VF) during acute myocardial infarction has not been investigated.
