Utility of PET In the Pre-Operative Assessment of Patients With Hepatic Colorectal Metastases

Colorectal Carcinoma

This study aims to determine whether a test, called the PET scan, may be useful in determining if there are additional locations of cancer not otherwise detectable by other tests. The PET scan is a nuclear medicine imaging study that measures how much radioactive sugar is used by your tumor. The study will compare pictures of the cancer from the PET scan to other x-ray exams, such as a CT scan, as well as to what your doctors find at the time of surgery. If the study results show that the PET scan gives us a good idea of what is happening to the tumor, then it may be useful in deciding which patients with colorectal metastases to the liver should be operated on and what operation should be performed. Additionally, by comparing the results of PET scans with the other studies that will be performed as part of your care, we will try to determine which test best tells us which patient is most likely to benefit from surgery.

Ramanspectroscopy in Barrett's Esophagus

Barrett's Esophagus

This study is being done to see if a new device, called near-infrared Raman spectroscopy, can provide similar information as that obtained from taking biopsies of the lining of your Barrett's esophagus

DNA Repair and Genetic Susceptibility to Lung Cancer

Lung CancerSingle Primary Lung Cancer1 more

The purpose of this study is to help us better understand the cellular changes that may lead to the development of lung cancer. We want to compare people with a second primary lung cancer with those who have only a first primary lung cancer. We hope to use the information obtained in this study as the basis for future studies and will not regard the results from this study as final. We will analyze your blood cells and DNA to measure the changes in several genes that we believe may be involved in lung cancer. We also want to evaluate the capacity for your DNA to repair itself.

Early Screening of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Cirrhotic Patients: a Prospective Study

CirrhosisHepatocellular Carcinoma

Although serum alpha-fetoprotein level and abdominal sonography are the main methods to screening hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic patients, the adequate time and methods used are not completely well-defined. This study aims to assess the better timing and methods for prospectively screening HCC in patients with cirrhosis

Detecting Lesions in the Oral Cavity With Thermal Imaging

CarcinomaSquamous Cell

Previous studies indicate that there are significant differences in the temperature of tumors and normal, adjacent tissues. The present study will test this hypothesis for lesions in the oral cavity. Thermal images of the oral cavities of patients, undergoing examination in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Sheba hospital, will be compared to the diagnoses of the examining doctors. The results, apart from enhancing the delineation of oral cavity tumors, may help the decision to develop miniature thermal cameras to scan thermally, the GI tract.

Collecting and Storing Tissue Samples From Patients With Rare or Cutaneous Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma...

Adult Immunoblastic LymphomaCentral Nervous System Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma11 more

This research study is collecting and storing tissue samples from patients with rare or cutaneous non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Collecting and storing samples of tissue from patients with cancer to test in the laboratory may help the study of cancer in the future.

Randomized Study of Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography (PET/CT) in Pre-Operative...

Non-Small Cell Lung CancerThoracotomy

Patients with possible operable non-small cell lung cancer are randomised to conventional staging, or conventional staging and PET/CT. According to, patients with operable tumor will be referred to surgery, and the number of thoracotomies and futile thoracotomies wil be compared with the two groups in order to asses the possible benefit of PET/CT.

Immunohistochemical Expression Patterns of microRNA Processing Enzyme Dicer in Cutaneous Malignant...

NaeviMalignant Melanoma

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are very small endogenous RNA molecules about 22-25 nucleotides in length, capable of post-transcriptional gene regulation. miRNAs bind to their target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to cleavage or suppression of target mRNA translation based on the degree of complementarity. miRNAs have recently been shown to play pivotal roles in diverse developmental and cellular processes and linked to a variety of skin diseases and cancers. In the present study the researchers investigate the immunohistochemical distribution of Dicer in benign and dysplastic melanocytic naevi as well as in cutaneous malignant melanoma compared to intraindividual healthy control.

Study of Economic Circumstances, Service Utilization, and Service Needs Among Older Colon Cancer...

Colon Cancer

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the social and financial impact of colon cancer for older patients. We want to know how cancer has affected the patient financially and socially, and to know if the patient has resource needs that have gone unmet. By doing this study, we hope to learn about resources that can reduce the financial burden from cancer.
