Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) of Uterine Fibroids

Uterine Fibroids

The purpose of this study is to gain additional information regarding use of Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) for uterine fibroid characterization. In this study, the investigators will use a new noninvasive technology, MRE, to further characterize the elastic properties of the uterine fibroids. To date, very little is known concerning how the tissue composition of the uterine fibroid may affect its treatment with Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS). In this study, the investigators will use a new noninvasive technology, magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), to further characterize the elastic properties of the uterine fibroids. This information will be gathered during routine magnetic resonance imaging for symptomatic uterine fibroids. It is known that some fibroids with increased T2-signal on Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) can be more difficult to treat. This information will be gathered during routine magnetic resonance imaging for symptomatic uterine fibroids.

Respiration Gated Laser Guided CT Lung Nodule Biopsy

The primary outcome of this study is to investigate the accuracy of respiration gated laser guided CT lung nodule biopsy through a prospective randomized trial using a bellows-based breath hold monitoring system. Secondary outcome is the rate of complications using laser guided CT biopsy in general and with bellows-based breath hold monitoring system. The study has approval from the The Danish National Committee on Biomedical Research Ethics (ref no: H-4-2010-fsp 1).

Feasibility of a Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Surgery System for Hepatic Procedures

Liver Cancer

This study was designed to confirm that the surgeon is able to perform surface registration of standard liver features used as landmarks during a scheduled laparoscopic liver procedure. Additionally, registrations will be obtained with full insufflation pressure and with half insufflation pressure during the laparoscopic procedure. Under the presence of both insufflation pressures, the surface of the liver will be manually swabbed with the study tracked laparoscopic probe with landmarks noted during data collection. After registration of the liver is obtained, the registration points obtained during this procedure will be evaluated by the surgeon by moving the tracked laparoscopic probe over the liver surface and evaluating the location of the tracked laparoscopic probe displayed on the guidance system 3D image. The surgeon will accept or reject the registration accuracy. Upon completion of the scheduled laparoscopic procedure, the subject will then undergo the open procedure scheduled for the surgical case. An open liver registration will be obtained with manual swabbing of the liver using the study tracked probe and will be accepted or rejected by the surgeon using the process described in the laparoscopic procedure. In the event that the disease is determined to be too great for surgical repair during the laparoscopic staging procedure, only minimally invasive liver surface data will be acquired and the patient will not be included in the overall study population.

Pleural Ultrasonography in Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of mortality from malignant diseases in both men and women worldwide. Accurate diagnosis, staging and therapeutic targeting of lung cancer and other pulmonary pathology are vital with regards to providing patients with expedient and accurate treatment and treatment plans. The pre-operative evaluation and consultation in patients who are to undergo operative staging or resection for lung cancer is multidimensional and involves detailed history taking, physical examination and review of imaging studies. Two important elements of both staging and pre-operative evaluation include the evaluation of: (1) the pleural space for malignant pleural effusion and (2) the diaphragm for appropriate movement. At this point in time, the pleural space evaluation is being performed using CT scan which does not allow the acquisition of real-time cytological material from pleural effusions due to the fact that the CT scans are done in a diagnostic setting. Diaphragmatic movement/excursion is not currently being assessed pre-operatively and its impact on staging and post-operative pulmonary function is unknown. Malignant pleural effusion is recognized as a poor prognosticator in non-small cell lung cancer patients and has recently been upgraded from a T4 to an M1a status in the new edition of the AJCC NSCLC Staging System (7th Edition). The appreciation of the poor prognosis related to malignant effusion has upgraded the stage from a Stage IIIb to a stage IV. Recognizing the stage early allows for more precise prognostication of disease and can lead to precision and streamlining of treatment plans for thoracic surgeons and oncologists.

Treatment Outcome After Surgical Treatment of Osteoid Osteoma

Purpose of the study: To retrospectively determine the clinical results in an unselected group of consecutive patients with osteoid osteoma treated by surgery. Materials and Methods: In 150 consecutive patients with clinical and/or radiological evidence for osteoid osteoma at any location, the clinical symptoms and imaging findings (radiographs and computed tomography (CT)) were assessed before and after surgery. There were no exclusion criteria for this study. A good response was defined as disappearance of symptoms that were manifested at presentation and were attributed to osteoid osteoma. Clinical assessment after the procedure was performed prior to discharge; within 2 weeks after the procedure; and at 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up. After 24 months, a postal questionnaire was used for assessment. Radiographic evaluation (radiographs and thin-slice CT) was performed routinely pre-operatively and one year after surgery. In case of persisting or recurring symptoms the follow-up protocol was again performed according to the initial protocol. All patients gave their informed consent both for the surgical intervention as for the use of their patient data in this retrospective study.
