Performance Status During Treatment With Pemetrexed in Patients With NSCLC

Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

The primary research objective of this observational study in pretreated patients with NSCLC of Stage IIIa/b or Stage IV is to evaluate patients' Karnofsky Index (KI) after the second cycle of second-line treatment with single agent pemetrexed in a real life setting, and to evaluate factors potentially influencing performance status in terms of KI, i.e. frequency of use of concomitant medications, in particular analgesics, folic acid, Vitamin B12, antiemetics, and medications against diarrhea; as documented in patient diary (days of use per week) and by the physicians.

Elucidating the Genetic Basis of the Pleuropulmonary Blastoma (PPB) Familial Cancer Syndrome

Pleuropulmonary BlastomaCystic Nephroma8 more

Pleuropulmonary Blastoma (PPB) is a rare lung tumor which develops in childhood. The underlying genetic factors which contribute to the development and progression of PPB are not defined. We are working to identify the genetic factors which may contribute to the development of this rare tumor.

Prospective Study of Possible Infectious Disease - Associated Antigen Drive in Previously Untreated...

Indolent Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

The purpose of this study is to determine if an infectious disease may be associated with the new lymphoma diagnosis. Infections to be tested include: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori): This is a bacteria sometimes found in the stomach that has been associated with a particular kind of lymphoma, gastric MALT. We are interested to learn if the H. pylori infection may be associated with other indolent lymphomas. Hepatitis C: This virus infection of the liver has been found in association with non-follicular lymphomas in Italy. We want to determine if the infection is associated with lymphomas in the United States. Bacterial overgrowth of the small bowel: Since indolent lymphomas often affect the lymph nodes surrounding the small bowel, it may be possible that an infection within the bowel is stimulating lymphoma growth. This has never been demonstrated to date, and will be studied in this clinical study. Epstein-Barr virus: This is the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis or "mono." It has been associated with other rapidly growing lymphomas, but not indolent lymphoma.

Genetic Susceptibility to Tumor Recurrence and Progression in Patients With Non-Muscle Invasive...

Bladder CancerUrinary Cancer1 more

The purpose of the study is to see if we will be more able to tell what the risk is for bladder cancer to reoccur or worsen when genetics and risk factors are examined along with the stage and grade of the tumor. Superficial bladder cancer is a cancer that does not grow into the muscle layer of the bladder wall. Even though it is a superficial cancer, this type of cancer tends to come back after being treated and is often more aggressive when it returns. We already know, that the "stage" or how deeply the tumor grows into the bladder wall and the "grade" or how fast the tumor grows affect whether the tumor will come back or get worse over time. Now we use information about the stage and grade of your tumor to decide how to treat the tumor and how often you should be checked after the treatment is over. However, this has not been very reliable, because each person has unique genetic characteristics and other factors that are likely to affect what happens to the tumor over time. For instance, we know the risk for developing a cancer may be affected by your surroundings and other factors such as what you eat, the type of habits you have such as smoking, and the type of job you have, but not everyone exposed to the same risk factors gets a cancer. We believe this is due to unique genetic characteristics in each person which may help their body fight cancer.

Optical Coherence Tomography of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Barrett's Esophagus With or Without DysplasiaPatients With Early Esophageal or Gastric Cancer1 more

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses light to create pictures of living tissues and has been successfully used to generate high resolution cross-sectional images of tissue in the human eye and skin. OCT systems are now commercially available for eye and skin use, and several clinical reports on the use of OCT in the gastrointestinal tract have been published as well. The purpose of this study is to develop a high-speed noninvasive OCT probe which can be placed through an endoscope for the early diagnosis of pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. This is a pilot clinical research study that is designed to advance OCT technology, which may in the future be able to replace or augment endoscopic biopsies.
