Sorafenib represents the standard care for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, molecular predictors of sorafenib efficacy have not yet been identified. The primary aim of the study is to validate the prognostic or predictive role of eNOS,Ang2, HIF-1, VEGF and VEGFR polymorphisms in relation to clinical outcome (progression-free survival, PFS) of HCC patients treated with sorafenib.

Evaluation of the frequency and clinical characteristics of ALK rearrangements in Latin-American countries. Latin American countries are heterogeneous in terms of lung cancer incidence, ethnicity, and exposure to potential carcinogens. The discovery of the echinoderm microtubule-associated protein like 4-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (EML4-ALK) translocation as an oncogenic driver has led to the development of novel therapies with activity in vitro and in the clinic.

Vestibular Function After Chemoradiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is usually treated with chemoradiotherapy. While the effects of this treatment on cochlear function is well characterized, its effect on vestibular function is not well studied. In this study the investigators will study the vestibular function of 50 patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy for NPC both before and after treatment in order to better define its effects. All patients will undergo a validated questionnaire (dizziness handicap index), posturography, audiometry and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

Study of Neurological Complication After Radiotherapy for High Grade Glioblastoma

Leukoencephalopathy

The survival time and the number of long time survivors after radiotherapy in brain cancer patients have increased for the last decades. Therefore the topic of late-delayed neurotoxic effects of this therapy gains more and more importance. Among these side effects, the main and most frequent one is the leukoencephalopathy, a diffused and progressive damage of the white matter characterized by myelin loss, loss of axons and vascular lesions. The incidence rate assessment, as well as the occurrence time, is based on retrospective studies with low numbers of patients, but seems to reach 30 to 50 % of the patients according to the follow-up. The risk seems to be increased during the first two years after the radiotherapy, but persists for decades. To gain further insight in the radiation-induced leukoencephalopathy, the objective of this project is to study the onset and evolution of leukoencephalopathy in a 3-year prospective cohort of patients having undergone cerebral radiotherapy for glioma (stage 3-4), using specific cognitive tests, Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI) scans of the brain and predictive bio-markers of cognitive impairments.

Warburg effect is an important feature of tumors,and genetic variation is one of the main factors of individual differences to radiotherapy treatment response for nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC). Through the previous work investigators found that the p53 codon72 (Pro/Arg) was related to the prognosis of NPC; Using the method of proteomics, investigators discovered glycolysis related gene such as PGK1, ALDOA,was associated with radiosensitivity.Thus,with all the previous work,investigators hypothesize that the key gene polymorphisms in glycolytic pathway, such as p53 , influence the glycolytic pathway,which leads to differences in radiosensitivity of NPC. This projects will include 600 cases of patients with NPC to detect common glycolytic key genes polymorphisms. Besides,investigators correlate these factors with their radiosensitivity and prognosis.Then, prediction model will be established, and validation of the prediction model will be done. Using enzyme-labeling instrument ,comet assay and clonogenic assay,cytological experiments will further investigate the influence of key gene polymorphisms on the glycolysis efficiency and mechanism of radiation sensitivity.Thus,investigators could provide theoretical basis of individualized treatment for NPC.

Colectomy is the most commonly used therapeutic approach for the treatment of non-metastatic colorectal cancer. This approach is generally very effective however the rate of recurrence and the appearance of metachronous metastasis remains a major problem in the postoperative period. One of the hypothesis that can explain this tumor progression is the dissemination of tumor cells at the time of tumor mobilization. In this work, we wish to verify this hypothesis by comparing two surgical technics used in our department for left or right colectomies: respectively either first section of the mesenteric vessels followed by the mobilization of the tumor or first mobilization of the tumor followed by the section of the mesenteric vessels. To evaluate the dissemination, we will study two disseminations markers that have shown their prognostic value: i) circulating tumor cells (which represent a direct marker of dissemination) and ii) tumor circulating DNA (which is an indirect marker) but has the advantage of being more representative of all tumor clones and therefore the tumor burden released into the blood at the time of surgery).

Minimally Invasive Simultaneous Colorectal and Liver Surgery

Up to 25% of newly diagnosed patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) have liver metastases (LM). Simultaneous colorectal and hepatic resection has been proven to be a safe and effective approach in dealing with metastatic colorectal cancer. The aim of this paper is to analyse perioperative and oncological outcomes of minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) one-stage simultaneous resection of liver metastases and colorectal tumor in selected patients affected by colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases.
