Community Acquired PneumoniaHospital Acquired Pneumonia1 more

The purpose of the study is to determine if the clinical course of pneumonia is more severe when both, bacterial and viral pathogens are find as possible causative agent and how does it affect treatment.

A Multi-Site Clinical Evaluation of the ARIES Flu Assay in Symptomatic Patients

Respiratory Tract InfectionBronchitis1 more

The ARIES Flu Assay is a real-time PCR based qualitative assay for the direct detection and differentiation of respiratory viral nucleic acid in nasopharyngeal swabs specimens. The objective of this study is to establish the diagnostic accuracy of ARIES Flu Assay.

Using a Novel Algorithm to Improve the Retrieval Rate of Inferior Vena Cava Filters (iRetrieve Study)...

Venous Thromboembolism,Pulmonary Embolism,1 more

Since 2003, that the first retrievable IVC filter was introduced in the U.S,improvements have been made in the filter design to resolve problems of structural integrity and increase the ability to remove the filter after longer periods of time. The FDA issued a communication in August 2010 advising physicians to remove retrievable filters whenever possible and updated that letter again in May 2014 due to concerns that these retrievable IVC filters, intended for short-term placement, are not always removed once a patient's risk for PE subsides. Known long term risks associated with IVC filters include but are not limited to lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT), filter fracture, filter migration, filter embolization and IVC perforation.

Expression of Optic Atrophy Type 1 (OPA1) Protein in Lung Adenocarcinoma

Lung Adenocarcinoma

Optic atrophy type 1(OPA1) is a nuclear dynamin-related GTPase, targeted to the inner mitochondrial membrane, which plays a role in mitochondrial fusion. Mitochondria fusion is associated with process of apoptosis. . OPA1 plays an important role in the mitochondrial bioenergetics and mitochondrial networks. The changes in mitochondrial shape and mitochondrial bioenergetics may be cause of the disease. In this study, we investigate the expression of OPA1 in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) cells and tissue.

Expression of AMP-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) Protein in Lung Adenocarcinoma

Lung Adenocarcinoma

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an evolutionally conserved protein kinase that serves as an energy guardian to help cells adapt to various metabolic stress including hypoxia. Because the role of AMPK in cancers has not been fully elucidated, in this study we investigated the expression and activation of AMPK in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) cells and tissue.

Vibration Response Imaging (VRI) in Dyspnea Patients Presenting to the ED

Dyspnea

For the patient with acute dyspnea in the ED, early differentiation between CHF and non-CHF causes is essential for proper management. The capacity to triage patients quickly and accurately has a beneficial impact upon outcome, disposition, stratification and length of stay in the ED and required length of hospital admission. The ability to assess pulmonary status rapidly by quantitative regional vibration technology offers significant potential advantage for earlier diagnosis. The VRI technique may provide a quick and accurate method of differentiating between dyspnea due to HF and dyspnea due to pulmonary causes; thereby improving management and outcomes.

TIV Infant/Toddler Response Evaluation - Follow-up for Influenza B Boost

Influenza

Each winter, viruses belonging to two kinds of influenza A ("A/H1N1" & "A/H3N2") and two kinds of influenza B ("B/Yamagata" & "B/Victoria") can cause illness. The yearly influenza vaccine is designed to protect against both kinds of influenza A but only one or the other kind of influenza B. Current recommendations in Canada are that if an eligible child less than nine years of age has received two doses of influenza vaccine before, then that child only requires a single dose of influenza vaccine in subsequent years of immunization. In a previous study conducted in early 2010 we measured the antibody response to influenza B in children who had previously received two doses of a B/Yamagata kind of virus contained in the 2008-09 influenza vaccine and just one dose of the B/Victoria kind of virus contained in the 2009-10 recommended vaccine. The purpose of this follow-up study is to see if the protection (antibodies in the blood) provided against the influenza B/Victoria kind of virus that was in the 2009-10 vaccine can be improved with another (second) dose of the same B/Victoria kind of virus included in the 2010-11 vaccine. Since influenza B is an illness especially of children, understanding how to best protect children against both kinds of influenza B is important.

Diagnosis of Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis by Direct Lung Tissue Aspergillus Galactomannan Antigen...

Immunocompromised

Invasive aspergillosis is a serious and often fatal infection in patients who are neutropenic or have undergone solid organ or stem cell transplantation. However, early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis is a challenge. Reiss and Lehmann first described the value of serum Galactomanna (GM) for diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in 1979. The availability of the Platelia Aspergillus, a sandwich ELISA that has been approved by FDA in 2003 for managing patients at risk of invasive aspergillosis because of the early detection of the GM antigen. In several studies so far the specificity of the serum galactomannan assay was greater than 85%; however, variable sensitivity from 29~100% was noted over years. In addition, low values and false-negative results are seen more often in nonneutropenic and solid organ transplantation patients as opposed to severely granulocytopenic patients .There are several factors that might explain the reported difference in the performance of antigen detection, including the biological factors and epidemiological factors. In recent years, specimens of other body fluids are increasingly used for detection of Aspergillus galactomannan antigen, including urine, bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) fluid, cerebrospinal fluid and even the tissue specimen. However, the sensitivity and specificity of the GM detection in various specimens still have considerably variation. Ultrasound-guided transthoracic aspirate is a safe and useful method for collecting specimens for accurate bacteriologic diagnosis of lung abscess and obstructive pneumonitis10. We also reported a study of diagnosis of pulmonary Cryptococosis by ultrasound guided percutaneous aspiration. We plan to perform a prospective single-center study to investigate the role of GM in the target organ (lung tissue/fluid) by using ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirate for early diagnosis invasive aspergillosis compared with the serum galactomannan.
