Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:
- consecutive patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (severe deterioration of chronic liver disease) unresponsive to standard medical treatment for >=48 hours
Exclusion Criteria:
- arterial hypotension
- extrahepatic malignancy
