parent handbook to increase the quantity and quality of communications about alcohol

boosters are given to parents at three times (move in, visit weekend; student visits home)

parent handbook is delayed and given after semester has begun

heavy episodic drinking
frequency of heavy episodic events

Secondary Outcome Measures

drinking related consequences
Assess blackouts, hangovers, vomiting, fights, unplanned sex, academic problems and trouble with the police using the RAPI; YAAPST (standard assessment instruments for college alcohol prevention trials)

Examine the efficacy of parent interventions to prevent college student drinking in first year students.
Detailed Description
The aims of the study are to: efficacy of parent interventions to prevent college student drinking in first year students; examine mediators of efficacy; and examine moderators of efficacy.
