Lactoferrin for COVID-19-Induced Taste or Smell Abnormality
Covid19Taste Disorder6 moreCommon side effects of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) include disruptions in taste and smell function, which may persist for prolonged periods of time following recovery and resolution of COVID-19 infection. These disruptions not only reduce the hedonic pleasure derived from eating, but may also be detrimental to quality of life and could pose additional health risks (malnutrition) among patients with chronic illness or those enduring long-term complications from their previous COVID-19 infection. Previous studies conducted among patients with cancer experiencing taste and smell abnormalities have indicated improvement in taste and smell function following daily lactoferrin supplementation. Lactoferrin is a natural transferrin protein that scavenges and chelates iron byproducts produced as a function of lipid oxidation in the oral cavity following inflammation, infection, or toxicity of chemosensory tissues. The purpose of this pilot investigation is to assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of lactoferrin supplementation (750mg per day for 30 days) for the treatment of taste and smell disturbances following COVID-19 infection. Approximately 40 patients who experienced disruptions in taste and smell following infection with COVID-19 will be recruited. Participants will complete baseline assessments (questionnaires, blood draw) and will be given 90 lactoferrin tablets (provided by Jarrow Formulas) in order to take 3 tablets per day for 30 days.
COVID-19 Treatment Cascade Optimization Study
COVID-19This study tests an adaptation of the HIV Continuum of Prevention, Care, and Treatment Framework (CoPCT) for use in tracking COVID-19 testing and follow-up in a medically and socially vulnerable population. This study uses an integrated research collaborative framework that facilitates dialogue among researchers, community members, and service providers as a tool for optimizing the adaptive intervention and will take place at the Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center (CCHC).
Immunogenicity and Safety of a Booster Dose of the SpikoGen Vaccine in Kidney Transplant Recipients...
COVID-19This is an open-label, single-arm clinical trial designed to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of an adjuvanted recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunit vaccine (SpikoGen) produced by CinnaGen Co. in kidney transplant recipients after two doses of Sinopharm's inactivated virus vaccine. A total of 100 adult individuals receive a single dose of the SpikoGen COVID-19 vaccine at 1 to 3 months after the second dose of the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine. The injection is given in the deltoid muscle of the non-dominant arm. For immunogenicity assessments, blood samples will be collected one month after the booster injection. For safety assessments, all participants will be followed up for one month. Study hypotheses include: A booster dose of the SpikoGen COVID-19 vaccine induces strong immunogenicity against SARS-CoV-2 in adult kidney transplant recipients who were fully vaccinated with Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine. A booster dose of the SpikoGen COVID-19 vaccine is safe and tolerable in adult kidney transplant recipients who were fully vaccinated with Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine.
Povidone-Iodine Oral Rinse Study
COVID-19This study is a two-arm, randomized, 2-phase study. Phase I will be double blinded clinical trial of the safety and efficacy of an antiseptic mouthwash solution on reducing SARS-CoV-2 load in COVID 19+ adult individuals. Phase II is designed as an open label trial, and all subjects will receive the active mouthwash.
COVID-19 Serologic Strategies for Skilled Nursing Facilities
COVID-19The COVID-19 pandemic ravaged United States skilled-nursing facilities (SNFs). Novel strategies that maximize the safety and quality of life for SNF residents with ADRD and staff who care for them are urgently needed. Thus, the study's objectives are: To rapidly plan and pilot test an intervention that leverages COVID-19 antibody and PCR status to pair SNF staff with residents in the safest way possible To reduce reduced COVID-19 incidence rate compared to SNFs not using this novel staff-resident assignment strategy.
Plerixafor in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Related to COVID-19 (Phase IIb)
COVID-19 Acute Respiratory Distress SyndromeCOVID-19This phase IIb study, LEONARDO is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled, parallel group study, to assess the therapeutic efficacy and safety of Plerixafor in patients over 18 years of age, with acute respiratory failure related to COVID-19 and Recently admitted in ICU or equivalent structure (within 48 hours) for COVID-19 related respiratory failure without invasive mechanical ventilation and requiring oxygen support ≥ 5L/min to obtain a transcutaneous O2 saturation > 94% A total of 150 participants, will be randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive either Plerixafor (n=100) or placebo (n=50) as a continuous IV infusion for 7 days (from D1 to D8) in addition to standard of care (e.g. glucocorticoids...). Safety data will be reviewed by an independent Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) during the study.
A Study to Evaluate Immunogenicity and Safety of MVC-COV1901 Vaccine Compared With AZD1222
COVID-19 VaccineThe primary objective of the study is to measure the anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody titres in adult participants, in particular elderly, so as to demonstrate immunogenic superiority of MVC-COV1901 to the active control, AZD1222 vaccine, in terms of the GMT of neutralizing antibodies at 14 days after the second dose of the study intervention. This study also assesses the safety and tolerability of the study intervention and explores the immunogenicity in terms of antigen-specific immunoglobulin as well as the potential efficacy of MVC-COV1901 in preventing COVID-19.
Covid-19 Breath Test
Covid-19 InfectionCan Nanotechnology Biomarker Tagging (NBT) be used to detect COVID-19 infection in people presenting for COVID-19 testing? NBT can be used to detect the substances present in a person's breath. In this study the breath of people presenting for COVID-19 testing is going to be analysed. Analysing a large number of samples from people with COVID-19 (as confirmed by the standard swab test used by the NHS) will enable a breath profile to be produced, ie the substances present in the breath when someone has COVID-19. After the profile has been validated, NBT can be used to test whether or not a person has COVID-19 by seeing if their breath matches the profile. Using this technology for COVID-19 testing has advantages over the current standard test. The sample can be analysed immediately in the clinical setting and the results are available in 5-10 minutes, so if the person tests negative they can go back to their normal life straight away. The current swab test takes around 72 hours for the results to be available, and the person needs to self-isolate during this time in case they test positive, resulting in potentially unnecessary days of work missed and inconvenience. The breath test is non-invasive and is unlikely to cause any discomfort, as the person is only required to breath normally into the device. This study will also review the practicalities of using this test. It is quick and easy to train people in how to carry out the test, so it could potentially easily be rolled out to testing sites.
