Short-term Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Metabolic Control of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 DiabetesMetabolic Control

The strict rules applied in Italy during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, with the prohibition to attend any regular outdoor activity, are likely to influence the degree of metabolic control of patients with type 2 diabetes. The aim of this observational, prospective, single centre study was to evaluate the immediate impact of the lockdown rules on the metabolic profile of a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes.

Comparison Between Positive and Negative COVID-19 Pneumonia

Covid19Interstitial Pneumonia

In the late 2019 a new Coronavirus was identified as the cause of a group of atypical interstitial pneumonia cases in Wuhan, a city in the Chinese province of Hubei. In February 2020, the World Health Organization designated COVID-19 disease, which stands for Coronavirus 2019 disease. Following the progressive spread of the infection in other countries of the world, WHO declared the Pandemic on 11 March 2020. Italy was the first European country involved in the spread of the infection and among those with the highest number of victims. The Coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 has, as its main target organ, the respiratory system, being able to determine a serious acute respiratory syndrome similar to that of the cases found during the SARS epidemic of 2003: hence the name of the virus as SARS-CoV-2. The diagnosis of SARS-COV-2 infection is made by direct detection by PCR of viral RNA on different biological materials from patients with suspicious symptoms, and the first level diagnostic test is generally the nasopharyngeal swab. However, even if the specificity of the nasopharyngeal swab is high, its sensitivity can be affected by technical causes (sampling mode), as well as by intrinsic factors related to the method. The purpose of the study is to identify the clinical, laboratory and imaging characteristic which are similar or which can differentiate the hospitalized patients affected by COVID-19 pneumonia (with positive PCR on naso-pharyngeal swab) and patients with pneumonia with negative PCR for COVID-19. To do this, the investigators will compare the clinical, laboratory and imaging characteristics between interstitial pneumonia secondary to SARS-COV-2 infection, confirmed by molecular biology investigations (viral RNA research by PCR on nasopharyngeal swab) and cases of interstitial pneumonia negative to the nasopharyngeal swab.

Study of SARS-CoV2 Virus (COVID-19) Seroprevalence Among Lyon-Bron Military Health Schools Personnel...

SARS-CoV InfectionCovid19

Emerging in China in December 2019, Covid-19, whose pathogen is SARS-Cov-2, was declared a global pandemic in March 2020. The clinical presentation is highly variable, ranging from asymptomatic forms to acute respiratory distress and even death. Transmission is by droplet route, with an R0 of approximately 3. Rapidly, population protection measures were put in place by governments, including the confinement of all persons whose functions were not considered essential and the closure of educational institutions. Health care institutions are places at risk of Covid-19 transmission and hospital staff are particularly exposed, either through direct contact with patients, contact with exposed persons or through the environment. In order to protect personnel, hygiene measures were immediately recalled and reinforced. During the period of containment, the majority of students from the Lyon-Bron Military Medical Schools were sent as reinforcement in Army Training Hospitals and in the Military Reanimation Unit (Mulhouse). Some students developed symptomatic forms of SARS-Cov-2 infection, documented by positive PCR, during Operation Resilience or on their return from the mission. The Lyon-Bron Military Medical Schools staff, exposed both to the initial phase of the epidemic and to national protection measures, represent an extremely interesting population for understanding the epidemiological dynamics of the virus.

Singapore COVID-19 Chemosensory Tracking (SCCT) Study

Covid19

The study aims to longitudinally track the onset, severity and recovery of changes in chemosensory acuity (smell and/or taste loss) among those suspected of COVID-19 infection. Using standardised questionnaire and testing approaches, the investigators aim to objectively characterise and measure temporal changes in taste and smell to confirm the prevalence of these symptoms as an early marker of infection. Information on symptoms experience, changes in appetite and food-related quality of life will be also be assessed via questionnaire. The results of the study will help individuals who experience a loss of smell and/or taste to self-isolate and/or self-refer to a medical professional, if an association between smell and/or taste and COVID-19 infection is found.

Support for COVID19 Patients at Home

COVID19 Patients

The rapid spread and increase of acute respiratory infection cases caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus represent a major challenge for healthcare systems around the world. The shortage of facilities and medical personnel is a major problem in the face of a serious epidemic. The Lombardy Region, and in particular the territories of Milan, Bergamo and Brescia, was the most affected due to the rapid increase in cases and limited medical resources during the initial phase of the epidemic. The collaboration between hospital and territory with integrated communication systems and the monitoring of patients with appropriate technological tools that include telemedicine, are fundamental to ensure the continuity of care and the sustainability of the health system, also significantly reducing the risk of contagion for health professionals.
