Evaluation of an Adapted ACT Group for Stroke & Brain Injury Survivors
StrokeAcquired Brain Injury2 moreStroke and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) represent a major cause of long-term disability among survivors. Many psychological difficulties can also occur including: depression, anxiety, fatigue, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This has a marked impact on health service usage. Despite certain interventions being offered to support stroke survivors and individuals with brain injury, there is still an outstanding need to increase and improve psychological resources for this population. This research proposes to evaluate the effectiveness of a group therapy intervention, using a model called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), for stroke survivors and adults with ABI. This ACT group aims to promote positive adjustment and improve wellbeing, whilst also aiming to reduce levels of distress. The research will comprise of two parts (one quantitative and the other qualitative).
Written Versus Verbal Education for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Mild Traumatic Brain InjuryMild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is a common injury that involves loss of consciousness or alteration in mental status induced by an external mechanical force to the head. Education about symptoms and reassurance of a prompt recovery usually results in full recovery. However, a subgroup appears to have persistent symptoms and disability. This study will recruit MTBI patients from two Emergency Departments with the aim of identifying modifiable patient characteristics that can delay or prevent full recovery. A secondary aim is to determine if providing education in writing or in-person makes a difference.

Thalamic Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound in Brain Injury
Consciousness DisordersBrain InjuriesFew neurological conditions are as scientifically mysterious and clinically, legally, and ethically challenging as disorders of consciousness. To date there exists no standard intervention for patients suffering from these devastating conditions. The present project is aimed at evaluating the potential of non-invasive Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound Pulsation (LIFUP) of thalamus (a key area for the consciousness network) as a neurorestorative stimulation for those patients. In this study, LIFUP will be performed during two sessions. The proposed experiment will involve behavioral and paramedical measurements just before and after each of the two LIFUP sessions in a small sample of patients (up to 15 acute and 15 chronic patients) in order to evaluate the feasibility of a full scale clinical trial.
