In the aftermath of natural disasters, e.g., flood disasters, there is a great need for humanitarian assistance in the domain of psychological support. This is particularly true in post-conflict settings because people have suffered severely from multiple traumatic events and situations during their lives. The Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a short-term, culturally sensitive treatment approach that aims to reduce Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The investigators want to provide evidence, that NET is an effective and efficient module to assist people in the aftermath of natural disasters using the example of the recent flood disaster in Burundi. In addition the investigators aim to explore, how traumatic incidences and maltreatment during childhood may influence treatment outcomes.

The investigators will use multiple methods (including Oxytocin intranasal inhalation, neuroimaging, behavioral measures, peripheral hormone measurements) to examine how individuals' behavior, cognition, and brain function is impacted by the neuro-hormone Oxytocin. Specifically, the investigators plan to evaluate the influence of Oxytocin administration on affective processing in non-trauma exposed and trauma-exposed adults (both with and without posttraumatic stress disorder, PTSD).

The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a CBT-based smoking cessation treatment enhanced with transdiagnostic skills for the management of anxiety and fear-based avoidance behaviors (CBT-A) relative to a standard CBT-based smoking cessation treatment (CBT-S) for smokers with elevated PTSD symptoms who were exposed to the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster. The investigators hypothesized that the CBT-A treatment would yield more favorable outcomes with regard to smoking abstinence as well as improvements in PTSD and respiratory symptoms over a 6-month follow-up period.

The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy in PTSD treatment of concomitant voluntary reactivation of personal traumatic memories with neuromodulation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex using 10Hz rTMS, compared to 1Hz rTMS, during 2 weeks.

This study is designed to identify changes in the brain that underlie symptoms of combat-related PTSD using brain imaging (fMRI). Then, the investigators will administer mild electrical stimulation to the side of the head (using a method called tDCS) in an attempt to reduce the symptoms of PTSD.

This study will take place over approximately 6 months and includes 3 assessment appointments (where information will be gathered, but no direct treatment provided) and 12 treatment sessions of cognitive processing therapy if eligible.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a brief, efficient, and effective psychotherapy for individuals with depressive and anxiety disorders. However, CBT is largely underutilized within Veteran Affairs Medical Centers (VAMCs) due to the cost and burden of trainings necessary to deliver the large number of CBT protocols. Transdiagnostic CBT, in contrast, is specifically designed to address numerous distinct disorders within a single protocol. This transdiagnostic approach has the potential to dramatically improve the accessibility of CBT within VAMCs and therefore improve clinical outcomes of Veterans. The proposed research seeks to evaluate the efficacy of a transdiagnostic CBT by assessing clinical outcomes and quality of life in VAMC patients with depressive and anxiety disorders throughout the course of treatment and in comparison to an existing evidence-based psychotherapy, behavioral activation treatment.

The goal of this study is to assess the benefits of Healing Touch, an energy based therapy on post-operative discomfort and the rate of recovery in children. The aims of this study are to measure the effect of Healing Touch on post-operative: 1) anxiety, 2) emergence agitation/ emergence delirium (EAD), 3) pain, 4) time to wake-up, 5) time to meet PACU's departure criteria, 6.) maladaptive behaviors 2 weeks following surgery & 7)readmissions for complications 2 weeks following surgery. This is a triple blinded randomized controlled trial with three parallel groups. 240 subjects, ages 3 or 4 will be randomly assigned to receive the usual post-operative care, the usual care plus a post-operative Healing Touch treatment, or the usual post-operative care plus a sham Healing Touch treatment done by an untrained research assistant. The participants & parents, the evaluators, and the principle investigator will be blinded to study group assignment.

The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in civilian patients with a confirmed diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This research study will determine whether low-frequency (1 Hertz [Hz]) or high-frequency (10 Hz) rTMS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has an effect on symptoms of PTSD compared to sham rTMS treatment.

This purpose of this study is to look at the safety of the experimental drug GSK561679 as well as its effects on PTSD symptoms, thinking and memory, startle reaction, stress hormones, and mental health symptoms in comparison to placebo (an inactive substance).
