Exploring the Familial Reach of Adolescent Obesity Treatment

An observational study ancillary to the randomized clinical trial (RCT) TEENS+ (R01HD095910), a family-based lifestyle intervention, for adolescents with obesity, to determine: 1) if family-wide changes to the shared home environment are implemented, 2) if ripple effects to untreated family members are observed, and 3) whether these changes are predictive of adolescents' weight management success. Childhood obesity condition has increased 10 times in the last 40 years, representing one of the most important public health challenges of our century. The overweight and obesity in children are conditions associated with several determinants, mostly related to dietary habits, physical activity, and environmental behavior. To counteract childhood obesity, several prevention programs have been promoted, however evidence concerning their efficacy was contrasting, especially among the younger population and in the long term. Moreover, due to the wide variety of interventions administered it is not clear which specific strategy (or combinations of strategies) was the most effective. The LIVELY study aims 1) to assess the prevalence and the factors associated to childhood overweight and obesity; 2) to develop multidimensional strategies for prevention of childhood obesity by involving families and recognizing the role of schools as an environment for raising awareness on healthy and sustainable dietary patterns and lifestyle.

MINISTOP Plus Program for Pre-school Children With Overweight and Obesity

The Mobile-based intervention intended to stop obesity in preschoolers (MINISTOP) program has been developed to be a comprehensive digital support program for all children irrespective of weight status. However, a one size fits all approach may not be sufficient as some families may require extra support through in-person activities to achieve the required lifestyle behaviour change in order to attain and maintain a healthy weight. Therefore, the aims of this pilot randomized controlled trial are to evaluate the efficacy and feasibility of the MINISTOP Plus Program in pre-school children with overweight and obesity on: (i) children's BMI z-scores; (ii) intake of fruit and vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and sweet drinks; (iii) time spent in different physical activity intensities; (iv) screen time; and (v) parental self-efficacy.

Optimizing Intervention Effects in Children and Adolescents

Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern worldwide. In China, childhood obesity has dramatically increased as the economy has grown quickly over the past decades. Effective strategies to reduce childhood obesity prevalence may help to prevent related chronic diseases in the whole population in the long term. This study aimed (1)to assess the effectiveness of the intervention compared with the usual practice in preventing childhood overweight and obesity; (2) to determine the sustainability of the intervention in preventing overweight and obesity; and (3) to evaluate the process and health economics of the intervention. The project will be carried out in six primary schools in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province , those schools are randomly divided into two groups: the intervention group and the usual practice group. The participants of the study were students in the third grade of primary school, and the intervention will last for one academic year. This intervention programme will target the influencing factors of childhood obesity at both individual (student-focused activities) and environmental levels (a supportive family and school environment), with the intent to influence the knowledge, attitude and behaviours of school children.

Increased Protein at Breakfast for Weight Management in Overweight Adolescents

Adolescent obesity, negatively affecting the lives of over 18 million (34%) US adolescents, continues to be a major public health concern due to the increased risk of developing chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Thus, there is a great need to develop effective, dietary strategies that target health outcomes, including weight management and glycemic control in young people. One particular strategy that is gaining scientific support includes the daily consumption of a protein-rich breakfast. This study will identify the potential role of protein at breakfast as a key component of a healthy diet for improvements in appetite control, satiety, and weight management to reverse the obesity epidemic and prevent and/or delay serious health complications in young people.

NiPPeR Randomised Trial - Child Follow Up Study

There is an increasing focus on the need to optimise nutrition, lifestyle and metabolism of parents before and during pregnancy and of the infant after birth, but as yet there is limited understanding of the specific influences and of the underlying mechanisms. This study is a follow up of children from the NiPPeR trial of a nutritional drink enriched with micronutrients, myo-inositol and probiotics taken preconception and during pregnancy. In this setting we will examine the influence of parental nutrition, lifestyle and metabolism before and during pregnancy on child growth, development and well-being; ascertaining growth, adiposity, metabolism, neurobehavioural and health outcomes in the children, and characterising the underlying mechanisms. The data collected will allow identification of the contributions of parental and offspring characteristics, nutritional, lifestyle and medical factors, social and economic status, ethnicity, genetics, metabolism and microbes to promoting healthy growth, body composition and wellbeing in the children.

Redesigning Pediatric Primary Care Obesity Treatment: Virtual House Calls

This study examines a redesign of pediatric primary care overweight/obesity treatment, augmenting typical in-person visits with: (1) direct-to-patient video telehealth to tailor counseling advice to families, (2) that leverages certified health coaches as a part of the care team, and (3) creates skills building in real-time within the home environment.

Participants 13-18 years of age with extra fat stored in the liver will be randomly assigned to a protein supplement or placebo "fake supplement" for 2 months to see if the participants who get the protein supplement have less fat in the liver compared to participants who were in the placebo group.
