Virtual Reality Avatar Therapy for People Hearing Voices

PsychosisSchizophrenia2 more

Hearing voices is probably the worst form of acoustic hallucinations; which can be experienced as severely disturbing and is influenced by diverse factors including the ability of the individual to influence and control the hallucinatory experience itself. In recent years virtual reality has become a treatment option. In the so-called AVATAR Therapy, patients with schizophrenia and acoustic hallucinations design a visual and auditory recreation (avatar) of the entity to which they attribute their hallucinations. Working with a therapist over the course of several sessions, participants change the avatar from controlling to benevolent. Avatar Therapy involves similar processes to learning and cognitive restructuring, comparable to other psychotherapeutic interventions. The investigators plan to conduct an interventional study using a cross-over design, to compare the feasibility and efficacy of virtual reality avatar therapy for patients with acoustic hallucinations (independent of psychiatric diagnosis) with a cognitive behavioural group therapy aimed to improve social competence.

Cost-benefit Evaluation of a Transdiagnostic Psychological Treatment for Emotional Disorders in...

Emotional DisorderDepression2 more

The aim of this study is to compare, in cost-effectiveness and cost-utility terms, a brief transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioural therapy in two different modes, individual and group, with the treatment usually administered in primary care (TAU). Participants between 18 and 65 years old and with, according to the pretreatment evaluation, mild to moderate emotional disorders will be randomly allocated to the three clusters. They will be assessed again immediately after treatment and 6 and 12 months later. The study hypotheses expect to find (H1) the individual treatment generally as effective as the group one, whereas (H2) the TAU will be the least effective. (H3) The group therapy is expected to get the best results in terms of cost-effectiveness and (H4) the TAU will get the worst cost-effectiveness results. Furthermore, (H5) it is expected to find these results across the follow-up assessments too.

EPI-MINN: Targeting Cognition and Motivation - National

PsychosisPsychosis Nos/Other9 more

The purpose of this study is to perform a practice-based research project designed to assess whether cognition and motivated behavior in early psychosis can be addressed as key treatment goals within real-world settings by using a 12-week mobile intervention program. Participants who are receiving care at coordinated specialty care (CSC) early psychosis clinics across the United States will be recruited to participate in this study. A qualifying CSC program will provide comprehensive clinical services such as psychotherapy, medication management, psychoeducation, and work or education support. This study will be conducted remotely, and participants can participate at home with their own electronic devices. The aim of this study is to investigate a well-defined 12-week mobile intervention program specifically designed to target cognitive functioning and motivated behavior for individuals with early psychosis. Participants will complete a screening interview which will include diagnosis and symptom ratings, neurocognitive assessment, and self-reports of symptoms, behavior, and functioning. Then participants will be randomized to receive the 12-week mobile intervention, or an active control of treatment as usual. The investigators will test for differences in the clinical trajectories after training, and at two follow up appointments at 6 and 12 months post-training.

Value of Gym-based Exercise Training for Young Adults Receiving Antipsychotic Medication: The Vega...

Affective DisorderPsychosis

This is a multicentre, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial to estimate the effect of a 4-month gym-based exercise training program on 1) patient-rated personal recovery (primary outcome), 2) Health-related quality of life, behavioral and functional symptoms, and cardiometabolic risk factors (secondary outcomes) in young adults with psychotic disorders. Four-hundred antipsychotic-treated young adults (between the age of 18 and 35), who are capable to undertake an exercise program (potentially with a friend or family member where possible) will be recruited from outpatient treatment units and mental health services. Participants will be randomised to treatment as usual or exercise at a 2:1 ratio in favor of exercise. Outcomes will be measured at baseline and at 4, 6 and 12 months after randomisation, by researchers masked to participant allocation.

Effectiveness of Individual and Multimedia Versions of Super Skills for Life in Children

Depressive DisorderDepressive Symptoms4 more

Super Skills for Life (SSL) is a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral protocol developed for children aged 6 to 12 with anxiety and comorbid problems (e.g., depression, low self-esteem, and lack of social skills). SSL consists of eight sessions targeting common risk factors for internalizing disorders such as cognitive distortions, avoidance, emotional management, low self-esteem, social skills deficits and coping strategies. The aim of the study is to investigate the comparative effectiveness of SSL in its traditional and multimedia version on internalizing and externalizing symptoms in Spanish children between 8 and 12 years of age.
