Retinal Oxygen Reactivity in Patients Infected With Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

HIV InfectionsRetina1 more

Ocular lesions, including cotton wool spots and retinal hemorrhage, are a common feature of HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The aetiology of these apparently vasoocclusive phenomena in HIV related retinopathy is not well understood. Several hypotheses including infectious damage of the retinal vasculature and altered retinal hemodynamics have been postulated. The latter would be compatible with the theory that the retina of HIV patients is hypoxic. However, direct measurement of oxygen tension in the retina is not possible and indirect methods have to be employed. The study objective was to investigate the reactivity in retinal blood flow to 100% oxygen breathing in patients with HIV.

HIVHIV-11 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the non-inferiority of ritonavir-boosted GS-9137 relative to a ritonavir-boosted Comparator Protease Inhibitor when used as part of combination antiretroviral regimens in subjects who have failed, or are failing, protease inhibitor therapy.

A Randomized Pilot Study for the Treatment of AIDS or AIDS Related Complex With an Alternating or...

AIDS-Related ComplexAcquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Several dideoxynucleosides have now been shown to have activity against HIV but to have different toxicities. This study will involve therapy of patients with AIDS or ARC with two of these agents, AZT and 2', 3'-dideoxyinosine (ddI), which have different toxicity profiles, over a 2-year period of time. The rationale for using the two drugs will be to reduce toxicity and also possibly to delay or prevent the development of resistance. Patients will be randomized to receive either an alternating regimen or a continuous simultaneous regimen with these two drugs. The study will be structured as a randomized pilot study.

A Study of ddI in Patients With AIDS Who Become Sicker While Taking Zidovudine

HIV InfectionsLeukoencephalopathy1 more

The objective of this open-label study regimen is to make didanosine (ddI) available to patients with AIDS who are clinically deteriorating on zidovudine (AZT) and cannot enter the Phase II ddI programs due to protocol exclusion or geographic location.

The Safety and Effectiveness of Ganciclovir Plus Interferon Beta in Preventing the Return of Cytomegalovirus...

Cytomegalovirus RetinitisHIV Infections

The use of ganciclovir (DHPG) in combination with interferon beta to prevent relapse of cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with AIDS. While early clinical trials have shown that 30 mg/kg/week of DHPG is usually sufficient to delay or prevent relapse, neutropenia is a common dose-limiting problem in about 50 percent of patients. Since in vitro data have suggested that there is synergism between DHPG and interferon beta against cytomegalovirus, a reduced dose of DHPG in combination with a low dose of interferon beta may prevent relapse without causing neutropenia. If remission can be maintained with low-dose DHPG and interferon beta, maintenance therapy with a moderate dose of interferon beta alone will be evaluated in a subsequent protocol.

HIV InfectionsAcquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome1 more

To compare the relative merits of three therapeutic regimens in patients with AIDS and CMV retinitis who have been previously treated but whose retinitis either is nonresponsive or has relapsed. These three therapeutic regimens were (1) foscarnet, (2) high-dose ganciclovir, and (3) combination foscarnet and ganciclovir. To compare two treatment strategies in patients with relapsed or nonresponsive CMV retinitis: (1) continuing the same anti-CMV drug or (2) switching to the alternate drug.

A Study to Learn More About MAC Disease and the Use of Anti-HIV Drugs in Patients With Advanced...

Mycobacterium Avium-intracellulare InfectionHIV Infections

The purpose of this study is to determine if infection with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) occurs in other parts of the body before it is found in the blood. This study also evaluates the relationships between the amount of HIV in the blood, immune system functions, and the presence of MAC infection. HIV-positive patients are at risk for MAC infection because their immune systems have been weakened by HIV. It is hoped that aggressive treatment with anti-HIV drugs may improve their immune systems enough to prevent against MAC.

TMS for Smoking Cessation in PLWHA Cessation in People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)

Smoking CessationHIV1 more

The pilot study proposal aims to modulate craving and attentional bias towards smoking cues in 40 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), with functional MRI (fMRI) brain correlates. TMS is a form of noninvasive brain stimulation and modulates neural activity using tiny doses of focused electricity. For the study, participants would perform two cognitive tasks and neuroimaging before and after the TMS and investigators would compare changes in these paradigms with TMS. The investigators will also get a point of contact urine drug screen before study initiation. The investigators will aim to recruit 20 subjects in each arm of our trial (total of 40) from the BlueGrass HIV Clinic.

Quantification of Tenofovir Alafenamide Adherence (QUANTI-TAF)

HIV/AIDSAdherence1 more

This study is being done to evaluate the relationship between adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and HIV drug concentrations in persons living with HIV (PLWH) that are taking tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). Adherence will be measured with an ingestible biosensor (digital pill). Antiretroviral drug concentrations will be measured in different types of blood cells.

CBSM Intervention Via mHealth to Ameliorate HIV-related Fatigue

HIVStress Disorder2 more

The purpose of this study is to create a smartphone, tablet and web-based application to help people deal with stress. Stress often increases fatigue in people with HIV infection, so successfully dealing with stress could help reduce HIV-related fatigue. The study is being done at one site, the Medical University of South Carolina. Approximately 30 people will take part in this portion of the study.
