Placebo Controlled Trial of Depakote ER in Alcohol Dependent Patients With Mood and/or Anxiety Symptoms...

AlcoholismAlcohol Related Disorders1 more

The purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of an extended release form of a medication called divalproex sodium (Depakote ER) for the treatment of people with alcohol dependence who have mood and/or anxiety symptoms. This medication has helped reduce symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal as well as stabilize mood symptoms in bipolar disorder and other mental health disorders. This study will test the hypothesis that divalproex sodium will help reduce mood and anxiety symptoms during early abstinence from alcohol and in turn reduce relapse and craving for alcohol.

Health Behavior Feedback Study for Veterans With Hepatitis C

AlcoholismAlcohol Abuse2 more

The purpose of this study was to explore whether a brief (3 session) intervention would impact health behavior of veterans with hepatitis C. The main focus of the intervention was on reduction of heavy drinking with patients who have liver disease. Other study goals were to increase the likelihood that patients would seek out substance use treatment and/or hepatitis C health care services. The study also tested the use of a liver function test called CDT/GGT in detecting heavy drinking. The main hypothesis was that a 3 session intervention with personalized feedback about health behavior would result in a reduction in alcohol use and increased use of substance use treatment and hepatology health care.

Naltrexone for Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol Dependence

Bipolar DisorderAlcohol Dependence

The abuse of alcohol is especially common in people with bipolar disorder. However, very little is known about how to treat people with both bipolar disorder and alcohol abuse/dependence. The purpose of this research is to determine whether naltrexone add-on therapy is associated with a greater reduction in alcohol use and alcohol craving than with placebo (an inactive substance) therapy.

Psychosocial and Medication Treatment for Anxiety in Alcoholism

Alcohol-Related DisordersAnxiety Disorders

The proposed project is written as a "typical clinical practice" test and is a fully-controlled trial of a combined anxiety-focused CBT and pharmacotherapy (venlafaxine; CBT-VEN) delivered for patients with comorbid alcohol-use and anxiety disorders. The CBT and pharmacotherapy will be contrasted with relaxation training and placebo medication. One hundred and eighty participants will be recruited and, subsequent to a platform of outpatient treatment for alcoholism, will be randomly assigned to a 12-week treatment condition. All treatment conditions will begin with a 1-week placebo run-in, after which participants will begin a trial of venlafaxine or placebo. The treatments will conclude with a 2-week medication/placebo taper. Follow-up assessments will be conducted at post-treatment and at 3, 6, 9, and 12-months. The long-term objectives of this research are to develop a real-world combination of psychosocial and pharmacological treatments for patients with comorbid alcohol-use and anxiety disorders that compromise prognosis, and to evaluate the effectiveness of combined psychosocial and pharmacological treatments that target anxiety among patients with this comorbidity.

Modafinil and Naltrexone to Reduce Cocaine and Alcohol Dependence

Alcohol-Related DisordersAlcoholism1 more

Modafinil is a medication that may enhance mood and increase energy in cocaine addicts, which may be useful in preventing cocaine relapse. Naltrexone is a medication that is currently used to treat drug and alcohol addiction. A combination of these two medications may be beneficial in reducing drug and alcohol use in individuals undergoing substance abuse treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of modafinil and naltrexone, alone and in combination, at reducing drug and alcohol use in individuals addicted to cocaine and alcohol.

Levetiracetam for the Treatment of Alcohol Dependence and Anxiety

AlcoholismGeneralized Anxiety Disorder3 more

The purpose of this study is to determine if levetiracetam is effective in treating alcohol dependence in patients with anxiety symptoms. The researchers hypothesize that individuals are unable to reduce or discontinue alcohol use because of significant anxiety, mood, and sleep disturbance symptoms that accompany reduction in alcohol use.

Quetiapine Fumarate (Seroquel) for the Treatment of Alcohol Dependence.

Alcoholism

The purpose of this study is to determine whether seroquel is effective in the treatment of type A and type B alcohol dependence.

Behavioral Counseling for Alcohol Dependent Smokers (Nicotine Patch)

AlcoholismSmoking

This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a mood management intervention on abstinent alcoholic smokers with a history of major depression. The second aim is to determine the effect of smoking treatments on alcohol abstinence and to identify factors associated with smoking and alcohol outcomes (e.g., more days of abstinence). A randomized, two-group design will be used to evaluate the added benefit of mood management compared to a state-of-the-art smoking cessation treatment. Treatment will consist of 8 weekly group sessions and 1, 3, 6, and 12-month follow-up.

Drug Therapy for Alcohol Detoxification

Alcoholism

This project will provide relevant clinical information for primary care practitioners treating alcohol withdrawal syndrome in outpatient settings. This double-blind, placebo- controlled clinical trial will compare the effectiveness of lorazepam (Ativan) and carbamazepine (Tegretol) in alcoholics who meet the criteria for a diagnosis of uncomplicated alcohol withdrawal syndrome. Participants are randomized to five days of treatment with a 1-week posttreatment followup.

Behavior and Naltrexone Treatment for Alcoholics

Alcoholism

The study's purpose is to improve alcoholism treatment by investigating the combined effectiveness of a psychotherapy (Coping Skills Training and Cue Exposure Treatment - CSTCET) with naltrexone in a randomized clinical trial. Individuals will receive 2 weeks of CSTCET or a control treatment as inpatients followed by 12 consecutive weeks of receiving either naltrexone or placebo as outpatients. Followups at 24, 48, and 72 weeks after treatment is completed.
