Brief Alcohol Intervention in General Hospitals

Alcohol DependenceAlcohol Abuse2 more

The purpose of the study is to reveal the most promising procedure for implementing alcohol screening and intervention in general hospitals and to find out, if and to which extent non-specialist health professionals can be qualified to carry out motivational intervention on their own or if there is a need for a specialized counseling services. In a randomized controlled trial, patients recruited in general hospitals and fulfilling criteria for alcohol dependence, alcohol abuse, at-risk drinking or heavy episodic drinking will be allocated to three conditions: (1) Intervention by a liaison service (LC): Counselling based on the Transtheoretical Model of behaviour change (TTM) which will be provided by staff of the study (psychologists/ social worker) trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI), (2) Intervention by hospital physicians (PC): Counselling will be provided by hospital physicians trained in MI, and (3) Control group (CC): Treatment as usual, assessment only. Outcome assessment will be conducted after 12 months and includes abstinent point prevalence rates, drinks per day, help-seeking, stage progress and cost-effectiveness analysis.

Alcohol and Gender Effects on Stress Circuit Function

AlcoholismStress1 more

The purpose of this study is to look at the stress hormone response to medication-induced stress and a placebo (an inactive compound) in non-drinking, recovering male and female alcoholics, with a specific emphasis on the differences between men and women in the two recovering alcoholic groups.

Effect of GET73 on MRS Measures of Central Glutamate and GABA in Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder...

Alcohol Use Disorder

This study is aimed at examining whether GET73 modulates the indices of central glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in recently abstinent subjects that meet Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) criteria, as measured by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS), in order to provide a human translation of the findings demonstrated in different preclinical models, both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the study will examine the effects of GET73 on alcohol cue induced brain activation by using a well-established blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) paradigm in the same individuals. In summary, the study should provide important information on (i) the potential mechanism of action of GET73, (ii) on the brain mechanisms that would support its potential use for reduction in craving and drinking in AUD patients, and (iii) expand data on its safe use as a medication in heavy drinking individuals.

Hyperbaric Oxygenation in Treatment of Alcohol Dependence Syndrome

Alcohol Withdrawal SymptomsDelirium Tremens (DTs)

A 30 alcohol dependent patients were divided into A: Treatment group and B: Placebo group using simple randomization technique. (Liver function tests) GGT, ALT and AST levels and MCV (Mean corpuscular volume) at admission and 2 weeks later were estimated. Daily withdrawal symptoms were assessed using the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment scale (CIWA-Ar) and DTs by Delirium Observation Screening (DOS) Scale (version 0 - 1). The data collected from the two groups were compared.

Navigation Services to Avoid Rehospitalization (NavSTAR)

Opioid-use DisorderCocaine Use Disorder1 more

This study will examine the clinical effectiveness and health economic profile of services to link hospital patients with substance use disorders to addiction treatment, promote their medical stabilization, and reduce hospital re-admissions.

Carisbamate as a Potential Treatment for Alcohol Dependence

Alcohol DependenceAlcohol Abuse1 more

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of treatment with carisbamate compared to treatment with placebo, on alcohol-induced stimulant and subjective effects in non-treatment seeking alcohol-dependent human volunteers.

Validation of a Test System for Development of Medications for Alcoholism

Alcoholism

Using theTEMA (test system for development of medications for alcoholism) it can be shown, that naltrexone administration reduces the willingness to perform work for alcohol infusion in a laboratory experiment.

Project Relay Model for Recruiting Alcohol Dependent Patients in General Hospitals

Alcohol Use DisorderAlcohol Dependency

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Relay Model helping alcohol dependent patients at a general hospital to start specialized alcohol treatment in order to assess i) efficacy, ii) cost-effectiveness and iii) overall societal cost impacts. The effect of the Relay Model will be investigated in a single-blind pragmatic randomised controlled trial in which the control group consists of patients referred to treatment by usual procedures.

Chronic Alcohol, Stress Inflammatory Response and Relapse Risk

Alcohol DependenceDepressive Symptomatology

The purpose of this study is to examine potential stress and immune systems adaptations underlying craving and relapse vulnerability in alcohol dependent (AD) individuals and social drinkers (SDs) with and without high levels of depressive symptomatology (+dep / - dep). Using the investigators experimentally validated guided imagery procedure, the investigators propose to examine the response of brain stress and immune systems to personalized guided stressful imagery using subjective, physiological and neurobiological assessments in 60 healthy controls and 60 alcoholic dependent individuals with and without depressive symptomatology.
