The consequences of alcohol dependence are severe and may range from physical diseases to neuropsychological deficits in several cognitive domains. Alcohol abuse has also been related to brain dysfunction specifically in the prefrontal cortex. To assess these deficits and the application of a novel approach of cognitive stimulation to alcoholics, we have carried out a neuropsychological intervention program with mobile health technology. Patients diagnosed with alcohol dependence syndrome were submitted to cognitive stimulation during four weeks in a three-day/week basis.

A 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel group study will be conducted with 150 outpatients with alcohol dependence, with random assignment to pregabalin 300 mg/d, duloxetine 40 mg/d, or placebo in conjunction with manual-guided behavioral counseling and follow-up visits 1 week and 3 months post-treatment.

The study will determine if individuals with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence report reduced alcohol consumption, improvement in mood symptoms, and cognitive performance if treated with lamotrigine plus their usual mood stabilizing medications relative to subjects treated with placebo plus usual mood stabilizing medications over a 16 week period.

This study would like to test whether the combination of ondansetron and olanzapine will be superior to placebo at decreasing self-reported heavy drinking among early onset alcoholics.

The goal of the Disseminating Organizational Screening and Brief Interventions Services (DO-SBIS) investigation is to capitalize on the unique opportunity afforded by the American College of Surgeons' mandate by taking early steps to insure high quality, evidence-based SBI services are implemented and outcomes are assessed. In the first phase of the investigation, SBI services will be assessed for all 190 level I trauma centers in the United States. In the second phase of the investigation, 20 level I trauma centers will be selected for randomization to intervention or control conditions.

This is a study about treatment for people who suffer from both major depression and alcohol abuse or dependence. The study will examine whether the addition of acamprosate to escitalopram and behavioral interventions will improve outcomes for this population.

The overall objective of the study is to develop recommendations for treatment programs to help alcoholic smokers to stop smoking. A sample of 175 alcohol dependent cigarette smokers will be recruited from the community and treated in a 6-month outpatient alcohol and tobacco treatment program. The 175 patients will be divided into two groups. One group will receive an active nicotine patch and active nicotine gum. The other group will receive an active nicotine patch and placebo nicotine gum. Followup assessments will be conducted for 1-year from the beginning of treatment.

The purpose of this study is to compare a fixed-schedule therapy versus a symptom-triggered therapy for alcohol withdrawal syndrome in medical outpatients. The purpose of this study is to test the use of time-released bupropion (Wellbutrin) in patients receiving treatment for alcohol abuse/dependence as an aid to stop smoking. Patients will receive either a time-released bupropion or placebo. Both groups will receive nicotine replacement therapy during the 9 week study. A final followup assessment will be conducted 6 months from the start of treatment.

This study will evaluate naltrexone and cognitive-behavioral therapy treatments for alcohol dependence and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Subjects will be randomly assigned a 6-month treatment of either: 1) naltrexone alone, 2) naltrexone with PTSD psychosocial therapy, 3) a placebo with PTSD psychosocial therapy, or 4) placebo alone. An enhanced medication management intervention will accompany all treatment conditions. Follow-up assessments will be completed at 9 and 12 months after treatment.
