Longitudinal Study of Weight Change Following Lower Limb Amputation

The purpose of this study is to assess weight change in a population of Veterans with amputations. Little is known about the how weight changes following an amputation. It is widely believed that many patients experience weight gain following amputation. This study aims to identify magnitude of weight changes following amputation and determine characteristics associated with weight gain. Information on weight change trajectories would be useful to better understand long-term health consequences associated with amputation and to design and target interventions to encourage weight maintenance and general health promotion for groups at high risk of weight gain.

Relationship Between Gait Variability and Sensation

Twenty individuals who were referred to receive physiotherapy will be participants of the study. Participants with lower limb loss will evaluate with the following assessment tools: Demographic datas; age, gender, height, body mass, year, side and level of limb loss will be recorded. Gait parameters (step length, variation of step length) will evaluate with Gait Trainer Biodex 2, at participant's preferred speed.Phantom sensation and phantom pain will be asked as existence or not. Sensorial loss will evaluate with Semmes Weinstein Monofilaments

The purpose of this research is to test an investigational fabrication system for transtibial prostheses. This fabrication method will be tested for comfort and function to determine feasibility of use for amputees in developing countries. To address the need for high quality and affordable prosthetic technology in developing countries, the investigators have developed a simplified socket fitting protocol using expandable rigid foam. The foam is formed by mixing small amounts of two liquid components, which typically expands to several times its original volume.

Hand Transplantation: Functional and Quality of Life Outcomes

There is an urgent need to develop hand transplant programs in this country. To this end, the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems is developing such an interdisciplinary program. The Transplant Center would like to track the patient experience from pre-operative care through surgery and post-operative care. Detailed information will be collected from the patient medical records, including: Pre-operative screening, demographics, medications; Surgical information ; Post-operative inpatient and out-patient care; laboratory and other test results; physical assessments, psychological assessments and quality of life assessments.

Evaluation of Result and Influence Factors on Composite Graft in Fingertip Amputation

Fingertips facilitate smooth motor activity, precise sensation, and the delicate movement of the hands and have an aesthetic function. Fingertip injuries are defined as injuries occurring distal to the insertion of the flexor and extensor tendons. These injuries are one of the most common trauma injuries presented in acute care settings, accounting for approximately 4.8 million emergency department visits per year in the United States.(1) Fingertip amputations may not constitute the majority among these fingertip injuries but can have a complex spectrum of injury. In these cases, the reconstruction methodologies focus on preserving the digital length, ensuring adequate soft tissue coverage, preserving the nail structure, achieving a well-contoured and painless fingertip, and restoring durable and sensate skin. There are so many factor that influence the result of composite graft in distal finger tip amputation. Investigators will collected the data including the size of amputee , shape, level of amputation, mechanism of amputation, if hyperbaric oxygen therapy, operation procedures.
