The purpose of this study is to test a multi-faceted anemia treatment plan to reduce the severity of anemia and to promote hemoglobin and functional recovery in adults who have been in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Postoperative anemia is common in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Iron deficiency delays the recovery from postoperative anemia and may negatively affect the postoperative trajectory of cardiac surgery patients. The objective of the study is to determine the effect of treatment of postoperative iron deficiency anemia with intravenous iron on disability 90 days after surgery. This will be evaluated in a randomized placebo-controlled double blind two-center trial in which 310 elective cardiac surgery patients will be included.

This multicenter open-label randomized controlled trial is set up to evaluate the effect of fetoscopic laser surgery on the gestational age at birth for monochorionic twin pregnancies diagnosed with twin anemia-polycythemia sequence. Half op the patients will be treated with fetoscopic laser surgery, while the other half will be managed with standard treatment. The hypothesis is that fetoscopic laser therapy will improve neonatal outcome by prolonging pregnancy.
