Severe Aplastic Anemia

Background: Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is a form of bone marrow failure. It usually results from a cytotoxic T cell attack on the marrow stem cell. Two treatments can be used for SAA. One is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). The other is immunosuppressive treatment (IST). In most cases, HSCT or IST works. But for some people, clonal evolution occurs after IST. One of the most common forms of clonal evolution is chromosome 7 abnormalities. These have a poor prognosis. HSCT can be used to treat them. Researchers do not know why clonal evolution happens. They want to look at data from past studies to learn more. Objective: To compare the data of people with SAA who developed chromosome 7 abnormalities between those who ultimately received HSCT versus those who received chemotherapy alone or supportive care. Eligibility: Adults and children with SAA who were enrolled on NHLBI protocol 12-H-0150, 06-H-0034, 03-H-0249, 03-H-0193, 00-H-0032, or 90-H-0146 Design: This study uses data from past studies. The participants in those studies have allowed their data to be used in future research. Researchers will review participants medical records. They will collect clinical data, such as notes, test results, and imaging scans. They will also collect the research data gathered as part of the original study. Researchers will enter the data into an in-house database. It is password protected. All data will be kept in secure network drives or in sites that comply with NIH security rules. Other studies may be added in the future.

Nowadays up to 40% of patients undergoing cardiac surgery receives at least 1 unit of red blood cell transfusion during surgery or during the first week after surgery. Moreover up to 40% of these patients shows an absolute or relative iron deficiency, with or without anaemia. The objective of this study is to assess whether to implement an adequate correction of iron according to current "patients blood management" recommendations might reduce RBC transfusion requirements in patients undergoing heart surgery. Data obtained in patients included in the study will be compared to those of a case-control population selected from patients consecutively treated at the same department in the previous 2 years.

IV Iron Versus Standard Treatment for Iron Deficiency Anemia in the Emergency Department

The investigators will retrospectively collect data of patients infused at UMC's emergency department (ED) with long acting irons (ferric carboxymaltose, iron dextran, iron sucrose, etc.), in addition, patients infused with blood products, with intent to treat iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Patient records reviewed will be from patients who were infused at UMC ED from January 2013 to June 2018. Primary aim of analysis will be to investigate superiority between interventions implemented for treating IDA. In addition, the investigators will utilize data to characterize patients who used ED services as an avenue to receive treatment for IDA. Further, the investigators will conduct cost analysis between different IDA directed treatments administered in the ED at UMC.

The Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is a recessive genetic condition, monogenic, resulting in defects in the red cell structure. In the investigators' country, this disease affects about 3,000 children each year and is considered one of the most prevalent disorders among the group of existing hereditary diseases. The lungs are frequently affected in this disease by Acute Chest Syndrome (STA). Besides being the leading cause of death and the second leading cause of hospitalization in SCA, the STA is correlated with cognitive impairment frame these patients, resulting secondary Stroke vaso-occlusion of capillaries that supply the brain tissue. Traditional tests of pulmonary function allow assess whether the person has any commitment in the respiratory system, whether obstructive, restrictive or mixed. To run these tests it is necessary that the patient understands and performs a forced expiratory maneuver to obtain reliable results. In the particular case of SCA, performing these tests it is very difficult due to the presence of cognitive impairment of varying degrees. This results in underdiagnosis of early changes in the lung parenchyma during the therapeutic window, committing the proper monitoring and treatment offered to these patients.

Background: Maternal and child under-nutrition is the underlying cause of death for millions across the globe. Anemia during pregnancy is among the leading nutritional disorders with serious short and long term consequences to both the mother and fetus. Objective: Examine the effect of dietary diversity on maternal anemia, nutritional status and key pregnancy outcomes of pregnancy. Methods: A prospective cohort study design, involving a total of 432 eligible pregnant women, in their second antenatal care visit was conducted between August 2014 to March, 2015. The individual dietary diversity Score (IDDS) was used as the exposure variable to select, enroll and follow the mothers. Epi-data, SPSS and STATA software are used to enter and analyze the data. Chi-square test, independent 't'-test, and GLM are used to calculate risk, association and differences between key variables at P < 0.05
