The Effects of Kinesio Tape® on Arthrogenic Muscle Inhibition and Rate of Torque Development

This study evaluates whether the use of Kinesio Tape® in combination with a standard exercise program improves muscle function in individuals with chronic ankle instability. Twenty participants will receive Kinesio Tape® and perform an ankle exercise program, while twenty will perform the ankle exercise program without Kinesio Tape®.

Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) is a valid patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to determine the presence of ankle instability (AI) and assess its severity. The aim of current study is to adapt the CAIT into the Turkish language, test its psychometric properties and determine cut-off score in the Turkish population with AI compare to healthy counterparts. In order to evaluate the Turkish version of CAIT (CAIT-TR), data will obtaine from 200-250 participants with and without AI. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, cut-off score, and ceiling and floor effects will evaluate.

Smartphone App to Improve Functional Outcomes in Ankle Sprains

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are the most common musculoskeletal complaint of children presenting to the emergency department (ED). Healing can often be protracted, leading to prolonged pain, missed school and work, and delayed return to a normal activity level. Smartphone apps have been shown to be associated with greater caregiver knowledge and improved outcomes in a number of conditions but have not been explored in ankle sprains. The investigators would like to know if using a smartphone app for children with ankle inversion injuries leads to improved functional outcomes such as pain, mobility, and return to activity. The investigators will be comparing a smartphone app that provides education and daily management reminders to a paper handout to see if the former leads to improved functional recovery.

Ankle injuries are one of the most common sports injuries. Ankle injuries account for 10% to 30% of all injuries and 5% to 20% of all time-wasting injuries. Athletes involved in sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball are particularly at risk for such injuries, largely due to the running and jumping activities involved. Basketball has one of the highest injury rates of any team sport, with 10 injuries in a 1000 hour period.

Effect of Elastic Bandage on Balance in Chronic Ankle Instability

Purpose: To report the immediate and prolonged (one week) effects of elastic bandage on balance control in subjects with chronic ankle instability. Material and methods: Twenty-eight individuals successfully completed the study protocol, of whom 14 were randomly assigned to the elastic bandage group (7 men, 7 women) and 14 were assigned to the non-standardized tape group ( 9 men, 5 women). To objectively measure postural sway we used computerized dynamic posturography with Sensory Organization Test and Unilateral Stance test. We analyzed the following Sensory Organization Test parameters: the composite Sensory Organization Test score, the composite Sensory Organization Test strategy and the Sensory Organization Test condition 2 and its strategy. In addition, we studied the centre of gravity sway velocity with open eyes and close eyes during the US test.

The Spraino Pilot Trial

Athletes With Previous Lateral Ankle Sprain(s)

This pilot study will establish the preliminary effect and safety of using Spraino® to prevent lateral ankle sprains amongst athletes competing in indoor sports at sub-elite level, with a one-year follow-up. All recruited participants will have a history of lateral ankle sprain in the preceding 24 months prior to the initiation of the trial. Half of the included participants will receive Spraino® to prevent lateral ankle sprains (intervention group). The other half will receive no intervention ("do-as-usual" control group). Both groups will be permitted to continue or initiate any usual care of their choice, except Spraino® in the control group. Short Message Services (SMS) will be used for registration of injury and exposure.

App-based Exercise Intervention for Persons With Acute Ankle Sprain

Acute lateral ankle sprains (ALAS) account for 4-5% of all Emergency Department visits in Denmark. Up to 2/3 of individuals with a history of lateral ankle sprain have prolonged symptoms for several years after their initial injury. Exercise therapy has proven to be a cost-effective rehabilitation in treating ALAS and in preventing re-injury. Injury-map© is an exercise app designed for treating different musculoskeletal problems including ALAS. The app has currently not been tested in a clinical trial with patients suffering from ALAS. This mixed method pilot cohort study aims to investigate the use and preliminary effect of an exercise program on a mobile device in patients with ALAS. The exercise program is designed to be completed within approximately 3 months. However, participants will be followed as long as they complete minimum 1 exercise session per week. If a participant is inactive for two weeks they will be considered completed and contacted for follow-up assessment.
