Anxiety and Distress Levels in Women With Suspected Endometrial Cancer

Endometrial CancerCancer4 more

Patients attending the rapid access gynaecology clinic with a suspicion of endometrial cancer are understandably nervous. Few studies have quantified anxiety and distress of patients in this group. This study surveys anxiety and stress levels of women attending clinic (by filling in an anonymous questionnaire). Additionally, in women who need a tissue biopsy, women are asked to rate their pain scores.

The Effect of Awareness on Preoperative Anxiety

AnxietyAnesthesia

In the majority of patients, anxiety and fear are observed at different levels before surgery. Preoperative anxiety was reported in 60-80% of the patients who underwent surgery. This anxiety and fear can be attributed to many factors. Some of these are mainly anesthesia, previous experience of the patient, personality traits, concerns about surgical intervention, and postoperative pain. Patients' anxiety levels can be influenced by a variety of factors, including previous experience, type of hospital arrival, sex, age, and type of surgery.Anesthesia-related awareness among the experiences of anesthesia is described in the literature. In a study of 20,402 patients in the United States, the awareness rate was 0.13%. Being aware is that the patient is awake during the surgery and recalls seeing bad dreams. At that time the patient could not specify this because he was immobile. Being awake is that the patient is awake and showing it through his movements. The patient may not remember this situation later. It is a condition that can always be overlooked in previous experience, which is an important parameter of anxiety in the preoperative period. The patients included in the study were planned to use the modified Brice awareness score, first mentioned in 1970 as the name of the person who used the anesthesia and anesthesia for awareness. In this study, investigators aim to reveal the effect of anesthesia awareness on preoperative anxiety in patients with previous anesthesia story.

Evaluation on the Anxiety of Third Molar Extraction

Dental Anxiety

This study was performed on 66 patients who were admitted for third molar extraction under local anesthesia. The patients were divided into three groups: group 1 with verbal information, group 2 with written information, and group 3 with previous surgical experience. Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), Dental Fear Scale (DFS), Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used pre- and postoperatively to evaluate dental anxiety

Mental Health Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on NIMH Research Participants and Volunteers

Healthy VolunteerMood Disorder2 more

Background: The COVID-19 outbreak has caused many changes to people s normal social patterns. The respiratory illness has been the major focus of public health efforts. But most experts also agree that government and public health mandates to slow the spread of the illness, such as social distancing, have a significant effect on people s mental health. Environmental stressors, such as constraints on activities, social contact, and access to resources, take a toll. Researchers want to learn how stressors related to COVID-19 affect mental health over time. Objective: To learn the relationship between stressors related to COVID-19 and self-rated measures of mental health symptoms and distress among a range of people. Eligibility: English-speaking adults ages 18 and older Design: This study will be conducted online. Participants will give their first and last name and email address. They will indicate if they have ever been in an NIH research study. They will get a username and password. Every 2 weeks for up to 6 months, participants will complete online study surveys. They will get email reminders. Some surveys will be repeated. At the end of the study, they will complete a set of end-of-study surveys. The surveys will ask about the following: Age, sex, race, and other sociodemographic data Mental and medical illness history and treatment Family medical history Mobility, self-care, and life activities Behaviors related to alcohol and substance use disorder Mental illness symptoms Psychological distress Stressors caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants will get links to mental health resources, such as hotlines. They will also get guidance on steps to take to seek care or support. Study website: nimhcovidstudy.ctss.nih.gov

The Ariel University Survey on Dietary Changes and Anxiety During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Dietary HabitsAnxiety

Background/Objectives: Psychological anxiety has been associated with alterations in eating patterns. The 2020 global coronavirus pandemic has created a situation characterized by increased anxiety. The present international survey was designed to examine associations between exposure to quarantine/isolation measures, anxiety levels and changes in dietary patterns. Methods: The present study utilizes a Google Survey platform to conduct an international survey querrying dietary patterns before vs. after the coronavirus pandemic; anxiety during the pandemic; and demographic characteristics. The nutrition portion of the survey is based on the Mediterranean Diet Score while the anxiety estimate is based on the GAD-7. The survey is available in English, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, French, Arabic and Russian. It has been distributed via social media. Anticipated Results: We believe that changes in dietary habits will be identified and that these will be associated with anxiety levels. Additionally, we believe that by-country differences will be identified. Discussion: The Google Survey format distributed by social media provides an almost immediate means of distributing the survey globally. The survey can only be completed if the respondent first indicates his/her informed consent. The convenience sample limits generalizability to individuals who volunteer to complete online surveys; however, we anticipate a large response which may mitigate this limitation.

Preoperative Anxiety on Postoperative Outcome and Sleep Quality in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic...

General AnesthesiaPostoperative Pain2 more

Sleep is a naturally occurring state of decreased arousal that is crucial for normal immune and cognitive function. Although surgery and anesthesia techniques have improved in recent years, sleep function and sleep cycles may still be altered perioperatively by surgery and other interventions under general anesthesia.Postoperative sleep fragmentation and poor sleep quality not only lead to hyperalgesia and delayed postoperative recovery, but can increase the risk of potential adverse effects, such as cognitive impairment, chronic pain and emotional disturbances, metabolic disorders, and pro-inflammatory changes. General anesthesia is a medically induced state of hyporesponsiveness that resembles natural sleep. Studies have shown that general anesthesia can lead to circadian rhythm time structure dyssynchrony, resulting in postoperative sleep disturbance, characterized by decreases in rapid eye movement (REM) and slow wave sleep (SWS). Previous studies have also reported that age, preoperative comorbidities, and severity of surgical trauma are independent factors associated with postoperative sleep disturbance. In addition, anxiety is an unpleasant sensation that compromises patients' comfort and well-being. A study by Ruis et al. estimated that 25-80% of patients admitted for surgery experienced preoperative anxiety, including fear of surgery and anesthesia-related fears. Furthermore, preoperative anxiety was recognized as a potential and preventable risk factor for severe postoperative pain and postoperative complications such as increased postoperative morbidity and mortality. Given that several prior studies have reported that preoperative anxiety has an effect on postoperative sleep quality in patients undergoing gynecological surgery, this study aimed to investigate the effect of preoperative anxiety on postoperative outcomes and sleep quality in patients undergoing gynecological surgery. Studying these results could enable us to better manage patients during the perioperative period to promote their postoperative recovery.
