RCT of RESOLVE: A Waiting Room Intervention for Crisis Clients

Depression Anxiety Disorder

Crisis Teams are now a well established part of the mental health system. These teams are effective in providing crisis management, treatment, referral, and educational services. We are testing a waiting room intervention for the patients attending a Crisis Team. As far as we are aware, no trial of a waiting room intervention has been reported in a psychiatric setting. This is a preliminary study using a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) Design. Patients (N =40) will be randomly allocated to either the treatment or the control group, and will be selected from the local Crisis Team. The treatment group will receive a waiting room intervention called, RESOLVE (Relaxation, SOLving problem and cognitiVe Errors), that is a short film, Plus Treatment As Usual (TAU), and the control group will receive only TAU. Patients in both groups will be assessed before and after the intervention, using the HADS (Hospital Anxiety And Depression Scale), CORE (Clinical Outcome in Routine Evaluation), (to measure psychopathology) and WHODAS (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule) (for functioning). We hypothesize that the treatment group will demonstrate significant improvement in mental health and functioning, compared to the control group. Analyses will be conducted using SPSS v22, and will consist of a t-test or Chi Square test to measure the baseline differences, and a linear regression to compare the differences between the two groups at the end of the intervention. Results will be published in international journals and will be presented in local and international conferences.

The main goal is to determine if probiotics might be useful as a treatment for anxiety and ADHD symptoms in children. A second goal is to examine the effects of probiotics on saliva cortisol levels. Finally, the investigators are also interested in the effects of the probiotics on children's digestive health.

The SAD Study - SLEEP, ANXIETY & DEPRESSION Study A Prospective Cohort Study

Patients With Anxiety and DepressionWho Have2 more

The prevalence of anxiety and depression in our OSA population is more than in COPD and the general population of North West Adelaide. (principal hypothesis). CPAP therapy in OSA population produces a positive effect on the anxiety and depression scale. The Investigators intend to study the prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with sleep disorders in comparison to patients with COPD and subsequently, to assess whether CPAP has a role in controlling anxiety and depression in depressed and anxious patients with sleep apnoea. This is a two phase study, in first phase; investigator will assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression, in a population with sleep disorders to check whether it is different to the prevalence in the COPD population. The prevalence of depression in Sleep Disorder population will also be compared with the Adelaide North Western general population, which was reported in The North West Adelaide Health Study. According to this epidemiological survey, which was conducted from 2008 to 2010, the prevalence of depression in Adelaide North Western general population was 20%.During the second phase of the study investigator will evaluate the effect of CPAP on anxiety and depression scores in the depressed and anxious patients with sleep apnoea by comparing the pre and post CPAP anxiety and depression status. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale will be used to assess Anxiety and Depression, which is a well-documented tool for assessing symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients with somatic diseases.

Addressing Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel DiseasesCrohn Disease3 more

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are chronic debilitating disorders of the gastrointestinal tract that comprise two subtypes; Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Canada has among the highest incidence rates of CD and UC in the world, as high as 20.2 and 19.5 per 100,000 respectively. Although, IBD can occur at any age, it is frequently diagnosed in the second and third decades of life, at a time when vulnerable individuals are entering the prime years of their lives. This age of onset, coupled with the recurrent and frequently relapsing nature of these disorders, can significantly impair the psychological well-being of patients. Therefore, it's not surprising that patients with IBD report a higher burden of depression and anxiety in comparison to the general population. The prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with IBD have previously been linked to the following: (1) Increased risk of surgery; (2) Increased number of relapses; (3) Clinical recurrence; (4) Treatment failure and earlier retreatment; (5) Lower self-reported quality of life, satisfaction, and medication adherence; (6) and Increased health care utilization. Although, depression and anxiety are highly treatable conditions, they are often under-recognized and under- treated in patients with IBD. The most common treatments for these disorders are pharmacological agents and psychological treatments. Psychological treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) have extensive support for treatment of depression and anxiety. The major advantage of psychological treatments over pharmacological agents is their ability to sustain improved depression and anxiety symptoms in patients post-treatment. As part of this study, we aim to evaluate the following: Specific Aim #1: Determine whether a psychological intervention, involving web-based CBT, is effective in ameliorating depression and anxiety symptoms in a cohort of adult IBD patients. Specific Aim #2: Determine the durability effect of the intervention on sustaining improved psychiatric symptoms. Specific Aim #3: Determine the impact of a psychological on IBD-specific and psychiatric-specific health care utilization.

Anxiety Self-management Intervention for Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary HypertensionPulmonary Arterial Hypertension2 more

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disorder of high blood pressure that impacts the heart and lungs. Approximately, 50% of individuals with PH experience anxiety or panic disorders. There is limited evidence on psychological treatments for anxiety in PH; however, results support the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Despite the prevalence and impact of anxiety in PH; there are no widely available and/or disease specific pathways, thus highlighting an unmet need in this population. This project aims to develop and pilot, using randomised control trial methodology, a self-management intervention for individuals with PH based on principles of CBT.
