A Randomized Controlled Study of Digitalized Cognitive-behavioral Intervention for Childhood Anxiety...
AnxietyThe aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a digitalized cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety among school aged children. The participants are screened from the general population, as a part of the routine school health care check-ups. Half of the children with anxiety will receive the digitalized treatment program, while the other half will receive education about anxiety in internet.
Chinese Herb for the Treatment of Depression and Anxiety Disorders
DepressionAnxietyAnxiety and depression are currently among the ten most important public health concerns, and in recent years, have reached epidemic proportions. Anxiety is recognized as the main risk factor for many diseases including cardiovascular, metabolic and neuropsychiatric disorders. Current anxiolytic medications have a relatively low success rate (~50%) and are associated with many deleterious side-effects. The investigators aim to investigate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a novel herbal treatment on anxiety and depression symptoms in a 6-week double-blind randomized trial.
Exploring the Impact of Perioperative Galacto-Oligosaccharides (GOS) on Stress, Anxiety and Cognition...
AnxietyPain1 moreThe overall objective of this proposal is to explore the association between the administration of the prebiotics GOS (trade name: Bimuno Travelaid; generic name:B galacto-oligosaccharides) with pain, anxiety, and cognitive function in the perioperative period. The investigators' central hypothesis is subjects who consume GOS in the perioperative period will demonstrate lower levels of salivary cortisol before, during, and after their operative procedures. In addition, the investigators expect subjects who consume GOS to have lower perceived levels of anxiety during the perioperative period. Finally, the investigators hypothesize that subjects who consume perioperative GOS will perform better on tests of cognition in the postoperative period. Such a finding would be beneficial in that administration of GOS in the perioperative period offers a safe and inexpensive adjunct to current medical management of perioperative anxiety.
A 14 Week, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Cross-Over Study of Methylphenidate Hydrochloride Controlled...
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderGeneralized Anxiety Disorder3 moreOther psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, often co-occur with adult ADHD; with 85% of ADHD patients having at least one other psychiatric condition. The presence of a co-occurring anxiety disorder has been associated with additive clinical effects, leading to more global impairment, poorer outcome, greater resistance to treatment and increased costs of illness. Stimulants are effective first-line treatments for adult ADHD patients, however the literature has mostly examined these treatments in pure ADHD populations (i.e. without other psychiatric disorders). Thus, there is little information to guide physicians in making treatment decisions for patients with ADHD and a co-occurring condition. This trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of methylphenidate hydrochloride controlled release capsules (Foquest) in treating adults aged 18-65 years with DSM-5 ADHD with and without a co-occurring anxiety disorder. The study uses a 14-week, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over design.
Handheld-multimedia Versus Oral Midazolam in Pediatric on Perioperative Anxiety
Perioperative AnxietyPreanesthetic Medication5 moreThe first goal of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety between anxiolysis by multimedia-distraction with an IPAD versus anxiolysis by premedication with midazolam prior to the induction. Secondly to evaluate the need for midazolam-premedication in pediatric day-care patients induced by inhalational anesthesia.
Aerobic Training Versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Management of Anxiety
Anxiety Depression DisorderAnxiety and depression disorders (ADD) have the highest overall prevalence rate among psychiatric disorders in young females. Its manifestations are disabling, distressing a substantial negative impact on the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy and physical therapy on female students with mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
The Efficacy of a Physical Activity Counselling Intervention on Mental Health in Firefighters
PTSDStress3 moreObjectives: The aim of this project will be to evaluate the efficacy of a lifestyle PA counselling program for physically inactive first responders with at least mild symptoms of either anxiety, depression or stress and their chosen support partners compared to a waiting list, and to determine the mediating effect of autonomous motivation. Additionally, the randomised controlled trial will be complemented with qualitative interviews to provide a deeper context and understanding to the quantitative findings. To the best of our knowledge, no randomized controlled trial to date has examined the outcomes of an online physical activity counselling intervention using peer-support in firefighters. Methods: Within mixed methods randomized controlled trials, we will follow a sequential explanatory design. In this design, qualitative results complement and help interpret quantitative findings. In order to address the main aims, a randomized controlled trial will be executed. CONSORT statement will be followed for reporting findings. Protocol will be submitted to clinicaltrials.gov. For addressing the secondary aim of the study, the study will follow a qualitative design based on interpretative phenomenology. Phenomenology is a model used for describing, understanding, and interpreting the lived experiences of the participants by means of discourse analysis. For the quantitative component, two arms with 24 firefighters will be required. Additionally, chosen support partners will enter the intervention arm. Participants in the intervention arm will be invited to a private facebook page where the researcher will upload weekly educational posts regarding different aspects of physical activity. For the qualitative component, participants will be invited to 2-3 focus groups where the experiences of the participants on the program will be discussed.
Er:YAG Laser Therapy in Combination With Behaviour Management Technique in Reducing Anxiety Among...
Dental CariesDental Anxiety1 moreThe aim of the study is to assess the efficacy of a modified version of the behaviour management technique Latent inhibition in combination with Er:YAG laser for achieving reduction of dental anxiety in paediatric dental patients. The main objectives are to compare dental anxiety felt during the laser and conventional dental treatment. The outcomes will be dental anxiety assessment by a self-reported anxiety during treatment in both group as well as measurement of heart rate dynamics during the procedures.
Acceptability/Feasibility Testing of SCAR
Social AnxietySocial anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prominent mental health burden, affecting more than 24 million Americans annually. Social anxiety is worsened by social isolation and severe, ongoing stress. Therefore, it is expected that the COVID-19 pandemic will significantly increase social anxiety symptoms and related impairment. Left untreated, social anxiety typically has a chronic course and a substantial impact on wellbeing. Despite the considerable impact of social anxiety, treatment for social anxiety is underutilized compared to other anxiety disorders, likely due to the distress socially anxious individuals experience upon presenting to treatment. Thus, treatments that are accessible and effective in treating social anxiety are needed. One potential to augment existing treatments for SAD is to develop brief, single-session interventions that could be administered virtually. These interventions could then be combined with additional technological innovations, such as ecological momentary intervention (EMI), to reduce social anxiety. Further, interventions targeting causal risk factors for social anxiety may be particularly beneficial, as these approaches could be used in both prevention and treatment efforts. One risk factor that represents an ideal target for interventions is anxiety sensitivity social concerns (ASSC), defined as the fear of publicly observable symptoms of anxiety (i.e., blushing, trembling, sweating). Although ASSC has been shown to be a risk factor for social anxiety, no interventions have been developed to target ASSC. In the proposed study, a brief (1 hour) virtual intervention targeting ASSC using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques will be developed through examining the acceptability and feasibility of the SCAR intervention prototype. The proposed project holds the promise of developing an intervention to reliably reduce the impact of ASSC, both as a standalone intervention and in combination with other therapeutic approaches.
