This study examines the role of sleep apnea treatment in improving cardiovascular biomarkers.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition of disordered breathing characterised by intermittent partial and/or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep. The participants, naive to nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), recently diagnosed with OSA, will undergo two automatic CPAP titration studies with collection of polysomnographic (PSG) data. The data will be analysed to assess effectiveness of Compumedics auto-CPAP device in the normalisation of sleep disordered breathing in OSA patients, with respect to another auto-CPAP device.

This is a prospective study of the Attune Sleep Apnea System for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The objective of the study is to demonstrate safety and effectiveness of the Attune Sleep Apnea System to support FDA marketing clearance of the device.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) has been used worldwide to help selected morbidly obese adults to lose weight. The FDA has approved LAGB only for patients 18 years or older. Our hypothesis that LAGB can be used to assist selected adolescents between 14 and 17 years lose weight and that the procedure can be performed safely in this age group. We are also evaluating the effects of weight loss after LAGB on known comorbid conditions such as sleep apnea syndrome and insulin resistance, and also on psychological health.

Patients who have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) may have different Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)when titrated with different levels of humidification. It is hypothesised that patients with ThermoSmart® technology (heated breathing tube technology) will have lower titrated pressures than those who are titrated using conventional humidification (non heated breathing tube).

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep-breathing disorder affecting around 2-4% of the population and is characterised by loud snoring, periodic collapse of the upper airway particular to sleep, sleep fragmentation, and sometimes daytime sleepiness. Health consequences include impaired cognitive functioning, quality of life, mood, and increased cardiovascular disease risk. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that increased morbidity and mortality in a dose response manner with increasing severity of sleep disordered breathing. The standard treatment for OSA is nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), which consists of pressurized air applied to the nose via a mask. Generally a single, optimal pressure is prescribed for a patient based on a full night or partial night study during which the pressure is adjusted by a technician until all sleep disordered breathing (SDB) events are abolished. Despite therapy efficacy, compliance to CPAP therapy is sub-optimal. Due to low compliance it has become common for healthcare providers to follow up subject therapy efficacy through reporting software inherent in many current CPAP devices. Healthcare providers can use this reported data to make appropriate treatment decisions. For this reason the data needs to be accurate. The SleepStyle™ 200 Auto Series CPAP humidifier is an auto adjusting CPAP which stores comprehensive compliance data. The aim of this study is to compare the reliability of the SleepStyle™ 200 Auto Series CPAP data to laboratory-based PSG in detecting sleep disordered breathing. Hypothesis: The SleepStyle™ 200 Auto Series reporting features accurately detects indices of sleep disordered breathing.

Congestive heart failure affects 2.3 percent of the population (approximately 4,900,000) with an incidence of 10 per 1,000 of the population after the age of 65 (1). The admission rate for patients with heart failure is on the rise, so is the mortality associated with it and its national annual bill, now exceeding $21 billion (1). Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is present in 11-37 percent of patients with heart failure (2,3), and tends to increase in severity when the heart failure is less controlled (4, 5). Therefore, the actual prevalence of OSA in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure is likely higher. There is now evidence that treatment of OSA with nasal Continuous Positive Pressure (nCPAP) in outpatients with stable heart failure improves left ventricular ejection fraction, and quality of life (6), and confers a reduction in fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events (7). However, there has not been any evaluation of the role of diagnosis and treatment of OSA in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure. This uncertainty about the true prevalence and role of OSA in exacerbations of heart failure, and the role of its treatment in the acute setting may explain why aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic strategy for OSA in patients admitted to the hospital with acute heart failure is not part of the standard clinical practice in acute care centers. Given the rising admission rate, and mortality associated with heart failure, an evaluation of the role of OSA and its treatment in this patient population is highly significant.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of acetazolamide as a treatment for sleep related breathing disturbances in patients with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome living at low altitude during a sojourn at moderate altitude

The primary objective of the study is to evaluate whether armodafinil at a target dosage of 200 mg/day is more effective than placebo treatment in improving excessive sleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) who have comorbid major depressive disorder or dysthymic disorder.
