Conventional Platelet-Rich Plasma Versus Concentrated Bone Marrow Stem Cell Injections for Osteoarthritis...

Osteo Arthritis Knee

Previous clinical trials have demonstrated the human body's own healing and regenerative cells can relieve the pain of arthritis. Bone marrow contains stem cells which can change into cells of various different tissue types, while platelet rich plasma contains growth factors. Both techniques have been shown to relieve pain and with this study the Investigators wish to compare the two treatments.

Efficacy of Intraoperative Injections on Postoperative Pain Control During Total Hip Replacement...

OsteoarthritisDegenerative Joint Disease

The purpose of this study is to clarify the efficacy of a multidrug versus single drug periarticular injection when only standard operative and postoperative pain management protocols used and the control group is exposed to what our investigators believe is the standard of care, single medication periarticular injection

Fit-Joints: Getting Fit for Hip or Knee Replacement

Hip OsteoarthritisKnee Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis leads to reduced independence and quality of life. Total hip replacement is a successful and cost-effective surgical intervention to relieve pain and improve functioning in patients with osteoarthritis. Research has shown that preoperative health status strongly predicts outcomes including physical function and hospitalization length after hip replacement surgery. Frail patients, in particular, are at greater risk of poor postoperative outcomes and could potentially benefit from interventions targeting an improvement in their health status prior to undergoing a hip or knee replacement surgery. Partnering with the YMCA and a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare providers, this pilot trial will examine the feasibility of a multi-modal intervention for frail patients that includes a supervised exercise program, vitamin D and protein supplementation, and a medication review. The results of this feasibility study will guide the design of a future multi-centre study, which if successful, could be developed into a routine model of care that is implemented in joint replacement programs across Ontario and ultimately improving the lives of frail seniors undergoing hip or knee replacement.

Astaxanthin Effects on Osteoarthritis Associated Pain and Inflammatory Indicators

OsteoarthritisKnee

This study is intended to assess the effects of astaxanthin use on pain, physical function, and inflammation as reflected by Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) scores and levels of inflammatory biomarkers in subjects taking astaxanthin. If improvements in pain, function, and/or markers of inflammation could be demonstrated with the use of astaxanthin, this may suggest the potential for astaxanthin to be used in management of knee osteoarthritis (and possibly other forms of osteoarthritis) with less evident toxicity than seen with the presently available standard therapies (e.g. NSAIDS, opioids).

Effects of Internet / Web-based Exercises on the Population With Knee Arthritis

Knee OsteoarthritisKnee Pain Chronic1 more

To test whether internet-based exercises reduce the pain in knee OA To check whether internet-based exercises improve the physical activity in the patients with knee OA. To explore the correlation between sleep, knee inflammation (effusion, synovial hypertrophy or/and synovial hyper vascularity) and biomarkers of insulin resistance and knee pain.

Comparison of Functional Outcome in Patients After Hip Arthroplasty Depending on Surgical Approach...

HipOsteoarthritis

The aim of the study will be to compare functional outcomes of the two surgical hip approaches in total hip arthroplasty: anterior, posterolateral and anterolateral. Surgical approach may have influence on patients functional outcome.

Ultrasound-Guided Adductor Canal Block for Total Knee Arthroplasty Surgery

Knee OsteoarthritisKnee Arthropathy3 more

The ultrasound-guided selective blockade of the saphenous nerve in the adductor canal provides effective analgesia and reduces postoperative pain in patients undergoing arthroscopic medial meniscectomy. Selective blockade of the saphenous nerve in the adductor canal provides effective analgesia without quadriceps muscle weakness. It has been shown that the adductor canal block (ACB) block increases the spread of local anesthetics in a distal and proximal way. Therefore, the proximal spread of local anesthetics may cause possible quadriceps weakness. The distal spread of local anesthetics may increase analgesic effect via sciatic nerve. The different volumes for ACB is a topic of discussion. The aim of this study is to compare the different volumes of US-guided ACB performing for postoperative analgesia management after total knee arthroplasty surgery.
