Effect of Sling Suspension Exercises in Proprioception of Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis

Therapeutic exercise is important to patients with knee osteoarthritis. Few studies reported the effect of therapeutic exercise in proprioception for these patients. The purposes of this study were to investigate the training effect of sling suspension exercises, as a proprioception-training tool, for patients with knee osteoarthritis and further, to build up an model of proprioception training.

ArtiAid® Plus for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Post-market Study

Hyaluronic Acid

The goal of this open-label, post-market clinical follow-up study is to demonstrate the safety and performance of ArtiAid® Plus Intra-articular Injection in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA). The main questions it aims to answer are: the safety profile of ArtiAid® Plus; the clinical performance of ArtiAid® Plus, such as pain relief and satisfaction of treatment. Participants will receive weekly injections of ArtiAid® Plus for 3 weeks and be follow-up for 26 weeks.

The Effect of Acupressure in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract Pain is the most common symptom of osteoarthritis and affects people's functional status with quality of life. This study was conducted to determine the effect of acupressure on pain, functional status, and quality of life in patients living with knee osteoarthritis. Acupressure application and follow-ups were performed by the researcher in the patient's home environment. The study was performed with 90 patients, 45 in the intervention group and 45 in the control group. Acupressure was performed two days a week for four weeks with a total of eight sessions on the ST34, ST35, ST36, SP9, SP10, GB34 acupuncture points following an acupressure practice guide prepared by the researcher. It was determined that while the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores of the intervention group were higher than those of the control group before application, they had decreased after application. It was found that all subscale mean scores of the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire increased after application in the intervention group. It was concluded that acupressure has decreased pain severity and increased the functional status and quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Patients with knee osteoarthritis may develop an antalgic gait over time due to pain in the knee, characterized by a decrease in the stance phase and stride length on the painful side. Gait asymmetry, which may lead to different musculoskeletal problems in the future, is observed in the patients. Gait symmetry can be achieved with gait retraining, and effective focus is required during training. In the literature, there are many studies of the positive effects of white noise on focusing, but there are also studies that report that it reduces focusing. Today, exercise training is usually performed in rehabilitation units or on treadmills. As there are important differences between walking on a treadmill and walking outdoors in terms of noise, uneven ground and visual stimuli, the place where walking training is performed does not reflect the outdoor environment. Effect of Methylprednisolone on Immune Signaling in Hip-arthroplasty Patients

The study evaluates the pathophysiological effects of a single dose Methylprednisolone administered prior to total hip-arthroplasty (THA) surgery. The investigators examine the effect on immune signaling and recovery after surgery. Half of participants will receive intravenous Solu-Medrol 125 mg, while the other half will receive placebo. The investigators hypothesize that the group receiving Methylprednisolone will experience a positive modulation of the immune response and an enhanced recovery.

A Biomarker Stress Test for Detection of Early Osteoarthritis

Veterans have much higher risk of osteoarthritis (OA) then the general population. Knee OA is common among Veterans and is a leading cause of disability. The earliest stages of OA development, where the joint cartilage wears away, is usually painless. By the time Veterans experience symptoms, the OA is typically advanced and there is nothing that can be done except palliation until the joint is replaced with metal and plastic. If there was a blood test to provide early warning of cartilage wear and joint deterioration, Veterans could potentially be treated early enough to slow down or even prevent OA. So far, development of such a blood test has proved elusive. The investigators propose a new method to amplify the signs of cartilage wear in the blood by challenging the affected joint with a walking task. Similar to a cardiac stress test, this walking challenge may help to separate joints at risk from healthy joints. The investigators will also see if this 'OA stress test' can show if a simple and inexpensive load-modifying shoe can improve joint health in Veterans with early knee OA.

Effects of Motor Imagery Intervention on Functional Recovery Following Total Knee Arthroplasty

The knee osteoarthritis becoming a leading cause of disability among older adults' population. When conventional treatments fail, a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is suggested. Although TKA treatment significantly reduces pain and improve mobility of patients, there is still high prevalence of patients whose neuromuscular function is impaired up to three years following TKA, which can be directly prescribed to poor or/and inadequate rehabilitation practice. Thus, motor imagery (MI) is proposed as additional rehabilitation tool to convention physical therapy to reduce decline of neuromuscular function in early days post-surgery. Recent studies showed that MI could facilitate learning and acquisition of motor skills, as well as maintain and retain previously acquired motor skills, which may be beneficial for those who undergo TKA. It represents an incentive in the process of motor learning and the transfer of the mental scheme of the motion pattern into the process of movement execution. Measuring neuromuscular function pre- and post-TKA could be unique opportunity to provide empirical evidence about its additional therapeutic effects. Outcomes of proposed research project could serve to improve existing intervention programs applied in rehabilitation protocols following TKA surgery as well as other orthopedic interventions. This would also contribute to the successful return of individuals after an injury to their everyday working routine. We hypothesized that MI practice group will experience better both subjective and objective measures of functional performance compared to control group that will be subjected to routine physical therapy only.

Biofeedback With Cycling Exercise in OA Knee Patients

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint diseases causing pain, muscle weakness and disability in older population. Quadriceps muscle weakness is one of the recognized risk factors for the development and the progression of the disease. Increasing the muscle strength could actually bring many benefits to the knee OA patients. The purposes of this study are 1) to investigate the effects of combining the EMG biofeedback technique into a stationary cycling exercise on the activities of vastus medialis (VM) in people with medial compartment knee OA; 2) To investigate the efficiency of a 6-week cycling exercise program on improving of quadriceps muscle strength and endurance, physical functions and pain in these patients and compare between the conditions of with or without EMG biofeedback; 3) To determine the relationships between the muscle activities and the kinematics of the knee joint during this cycling exercise program; and therefore to find the mechanism of the improvement on muscle activities in the intervention of cycling combining EMG biofeedback. In this study, we will enroll the knee OA patients from our hospital, and they will be randomly assigned either to the control group, who will cycle without biofeedback, or the biofeedback group, who will cycle with a real-time visual EMG biofeedback, during the six-week training program. The exercise program consisted of a 5-minute warm-up with low-resistance cycling, 30-minute moderate-resistance cycling exercise, and 5-minute cool down session. . The knee adduction angle, quadriceps strength and endurance, KOOS Chinese version, VAS scale will also be measured at baseline and after six weeks of intervention. Mixed-model repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be used to determine if there are any differences in the kinematic, myoelectric, muscle strength and endurance. It is hoped that the results of this study could provide information regarding the proper and efficient training strategy for the OA knee patients, and deliver the concepts of proper exercise technique to enhance health in the community.
