Effects of MatPilates in Pain and Functionality in Elderly Woman With Osteoarthritis.

OsteoarthritisKnee

Introduction: The osteoarthrosis is incurable, one of the most incapacitating disease around the world and your prevalence is increasing every year. The main consequences of this disease is pain and loss of functionality as a result of biomechanical limitations coming from articular inflammation. Among the variability of therapeutic resources, we propose MatPilates like a no drug intervention, that probably will contribute for a decrease in the symptoms of this disease. Objective: It is hypothesized that MatPilates is a method capable of decrease pain and increase functionality in elderly woman with osteoarthrosis. Methods: This study is a randomized double blind clinical trial, in which the volunteer need be in between 60 and 69 years old. Will be formed of two groups: MatPilates Group (MG) and Control Group (CG), and the ideal "n" will be calculated in a pilot study.

Does Fluid Replacement From Preoperative NPO Status Improve Postoperative Recovery

Osteoarthritis

The investigators are testing the hypothesis that administering 2L of body temperature warmed lactated ringer's intravenously prior to surgery can optimize the postoperative and recovery of patients undergoing total hip and total knee arthroplasty.

Evaluating the Need for Pneumatic Compression Devices

Osteoarthritis

For patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty, does the use of Aspirin alone compared to using Aspirin along with a mobile compression device provide equivocal results for preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) after total joint arthroplasty? The investigator will evaluate the prevention of DVT/PE after total hip and knee arthroplasty will be evaluated to see if there is a decreased risk of bleeding while continuing to prevent thromboembolic disease. The equivalency of using the mobile compression devices with aspirin compared to aspirin alone in patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty will be evaluated. A previous study has shown that patient compliance with the pneumatic compression device is less than 80%.

Manual Therapy for Hand Osteoarthritis

Hand Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hand is a major cause of pain and functional limitation, central sensitization of pain can be one of the causes: this hypothesis opens avenues for research in the modulation of pain pathways. The peripherally directed therapies may modulate pain perception bilaterally. This hypothesis opens avenues for future research in the modulation of pain pathways, perhaps offering targets to optimize peripheral manual and physical therapies for pain management in hand OA. Several studies have reported the outcomes of multimodal approach to central sensitization evaluated by generalized pressure pain hypersensitivity in patients with carpometacarpal (CMC) OA. Neurodynamic techniques are a form of manual therapy directed to the neural structures through positioning and movement of multiple joints. Recent technologies have facilitated the use of robots as tools to assist patients in the rehabilitation process thus maximizing patient outcomes. These robotic tools assist the patient with carrying out exercise protocols, optimal for the activity of the control group.

Total Knee Replacement With the Attune vs. the Press Fit Condylar (PFC) Sigma.

OsteoarthrosisKnee

100 knees with primary osteoarthritis and scheduled for a total knee replacement (TKR) will be recruited from our waiting list. The patients will be randomized to become operated with the Attune or PFC total knee arthroplasty. Randomisation will be done using envelopes. Patients can only participate with one knee.

The Use of Compression Bandages in Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Osteoarthritis

The use of compression bandages in elective orthopaedic knee surgery is well regarded, however, there is a lack of robust, well-designed evidence to support this. The aim is to determine the feasibility of conducting a randomised control trial comparing the use of a compression bandage worn post-operatively for 24 hours after elective total knee replacement, compared to standard practice (wool and crepe, non-compressive dressing).

Topical Versus Intravenous Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty

Arthrosis

This clinical trial investigated two different routes of administration of tranexamic acid in total knee arthroplasty: topical compared to intravenous.

Surgical Treatment for Trapeziometacarpal Osteoarthritis Eaton & Glickel Stage 4

Trapeziometacarpal OsteoarthritisThumb Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis is a common cause of pain and loss of hand function in postmenopausal women. Many surgical treatments have been described and recent literature has show that the relatively simple trapeziectomy gives equal results and less complications, when compared to other techniques such as ligament reconstructions and interpositions. These studies have been conducted predominantly in patients with stage 2 or 3 osteoarthritis. Stage 4 osteoarthritis is characterized by more cartilage and soft-tissue damage, which increases the chance for collapse of the first metacarpal bone and associated problems. The investigators' hypothesis is that an LRTI can be of additional value in patients with stage 4 osteoarthritis.
