Exposure to Potential Cytochrome P450 Pharmacokinetic Drug-Drug Interactions Among Osteoarthritis...

Chronic Low Back Pain

Using a retrospective analysis of a large commercial claims database and a Medicare database, the investigators evaluated DDEs that have the potential to cause DDIs among chronic low back pain (cLBP) patients on long-term opioid analgesia, which metabolizes through the CYP450 enzyme system, concomitant with other CYP450-metabolized drug(s).

Psychological, Sexually and Social Consequences of Osteoarthritis Treatment With THA or TKA and...

OsteoarthritisDepression1 more

The project runs as a Ph.d. project at the Faculty of Health Sciences- University of Copenhagen. In Denmark the investigators operate around 16.000 artificial hips and knees yearly, mainly due to osteoarthritis. The numbers has increased with 13,9% for hips and 50,7% for knees in the period 2004 to 2007. In 10% of the cases, or approximately 1.600 patients, the patient is younger than 50 years - mid-life, working, socially active and sexually active. The investigators have a tendency within in the orthopedic society to mainly focus on the technological aspects of the procedure and tend to forget that this is a key event for the patient with widespread consequences for the patient and his future life. Hip- and knee arthroplasties is without no doubt two of the most important and successfully surgical procedures ever introduced. The economical cost for osteoarthritis treatment has exploded in the developed world over the last decade, with a yearly growth on 8%. Because of the limited lifetime for an artificial hip or knee, this treatment can be unfortunate for the young patient. This has over the last years led to an increased interest for joint preserving surgery. Over the last twenty years it has been tried to delay the time for total hip arthroplasties for patients with hip dysplasia with the aid of Ganz osteotomy. Since this technique was introduced back in 1988, the research on the topic has had its main focus on optimizing the operation technique. So as with surgery with artificial hip or knee the investigators have a lack of knowledge regarding the social, work related, psychological and sexual aspects of this treatment. Purpose The consequences of an artificial hip or knee joint regarding patients' social-life, work, psychological and sexual aspects gain very little attention international. The investigators apply most of our research funds exclusively to research and development of the surgical track and procedure, new prosthesis designs or coatings. The investigators find this study highly relevant because this kind of studies has been preformed for several chronic diseases but not osteoarthritis and its treatment. With this study the investigators wish to examine the social, work related, psychological and sexual aspects of end stage osteoarthritis. This will lead the way for improved information to the patient and improve the surgeons' possibilities for chosen the correct time for surgery.

Genetic and Immune Studies of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Related Conditions

ArthritisPsoriatic4 more

This protocol will examine blood, synovial fluid and synovial tissue from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic inflammatory joint diseases to study genetic and immunologic factors involved in the cause, development and progression of these conditions. Synovial fluid is the lubricating fluid in joints. The synovial membrane is a delicate tissue lining the inner surface of joints, which, in arthritic conditions, thickens and becomes infiltrated with various types of cells. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis and certain patients with other forms of arthritis may be eligible for this study. Those enrolled will be followed periodically for follow-up and disease evaluation. They may undergo the following procedures: Synovial fluid aspiration, when medically indicated (for example, for joint swelling and inflammation). For this procedure, an area of skin around the joint is numbed with an anesthetic, and a needle is inserted into the joint to withdraw a small fluid sample. Periodic blood sampling, not to exceed 450 milliliters (15 ounces) during any 6-week period, for genetic studies of rheumatoid arthritis. The samples are usually taken at the same times that synovial fluid is withdrawn. Synovial tissues, collected by needle biopsy or during surgical procedures for arthroscopy (examination of the interior of the joint and repair of the joint) or total joint replacement. For the needle biopsy, the skin over the biopsy site is washed and anesthetized. A needle is inserted and fluid is aspirated. The biopsy needle is then inserted through the outer needle and a tissue sample is suctioned. Patients who qualify for other research studies may be invited to participate.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Dual-energy CT

OsteoarthritisHand Osteoarthritis7 more

The study will include 20 people with hand OA awaiting surgery in the fingers. Participants will undergo dual-energy CT, cone-beam CT, ultrasound, clinical examination, blood sampling and questionnaires. Images will be analysed for the presence of joint-associated crystal including monosodium urate, calcium pyrophosphate and calcium hydroxyapatite. Material obtained during surgery will be used for crystal verification and calculation of diagnostic accuracy of dual-energy CT and cone-beam CT.

Temporal Activation of Core Muscles and Vasti in Isolated Patellofemoral Osteoarthritis

Chondromalacia Patellae

Objective: To compare the temporal muscle activation between females with PF OA and normal controls during stair ascent. Methods: An observational comparative study was conducted with thirty-one females with PF OA and 11 healthy ones. The onset times of multifidus, transversus abdominus (TrA), gluteus medius (GM), and vasti muscles were measured by quantitative Electromyography during stair ascent task. hypothesis: Investigators hypothesized that there won't be a significant difference between females with PF OA and their matched healthy group regarding the onset times of vastus medialis obliqus (VMO), vastus lateralis (VL), gluteus medius (GM), multifidus, and transversus abdominus (TrA), during stair ascent task.

Evaluation of the Use of an E-health Therapeutic Education Application for Osteoarthritis Patients...

Osteo Arthritis Knee

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease affecting the joint in a comprehensive and progressive manner. It leads to increasing disability. The recommendations of recent years favor the non-pharmacological treatment of osteoarthritis including regular physical activity, therapeutic education and weight loss Osteoarthritis population has a low level of physical activity due to a lack of information, motivation and false beliefs related to physical activity and kinesiophobia (fear of movement) A preliminary qualitative study (ARTHe1) evaluating the barriers and levers of the use of an e-health therapeutic education application in patients with osteoarthritis was carried out in order to guide the development of the ARTHe application. The objective of this study is to have the application tested on a panel of patients in order to assess the benefits of using the application in terms of adherence to the practice of physical activity but also in clinical terms on function and pain, and the satisfaction of the patient
