Knee Replacement Outcome Predicted by Physiotherapists

Total Knee ReplacementOsteoarthritis

The aim is to assess if physiotherapists attending inpatients at elective orthopaedic wards can predict the future course (post hospitalisation) of recovery of patients undergoing KA. The prediction is made at hospital discharge using a 1-10 numerical rating scale (1=poor prognosis; 10=best prognosis). To identify candidate prognostic factors, the therapist are asked to qualify their prognosis narratively, by listing at least 3-5 factors that they consider important for their projected prognosis score. There will be no maximum number of factors the physiotherapist can list.

Reliability and Validity of Gait and Postural Balance Parameters

OsteoarthritisKnee

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients, have impairments in gait and balance. Accurate gait and postural balance analysis is needed to detect this impairments. Nevertheless methodological quality about the recording of gait and balance analysis in KOA patients is lacking in literature.

Neuroimaging of Patients With Severe Knee Osteoarthrosis - Evaluation of Cerebral Volumetry

OsteoarthritisKnee

Due to scarce published articles about this subject, the researchers aim to study the volume measurements of the brain cortex of patients with primary severe knee osteoarthrosis and those with chronic knee pain compared to healthy and non-symptomatic volunteers, correlating the neuroimaging of cerebral volumetry with pain intensity, pain duration, knee function and pressure pain threshold.

Changes of the Single Limb Standing Balance After Total Knee Arthroplasty in Degenerative Osteoarthritis...

Knee Osteoarthritis

It was well known that total knee arthroplasty could improve the previously impaired proprioception in degenerative osteoarthritis. Most current researches have been focused on the change of the proprioception. However, the evaluation of the proprioception is based on the surrogated end. Double or single limb standing balance is considered functional scale. It is very important view for the prevention of slipping down injury in evidence-based approaches for knee osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, few study have been performed for figuring proprioceptive change after surgery out. Considering the similarity between the proprioception and the standing balance and reported positive result in proprioception after total knee arthroplasty, the investigators supposed that total knee arthroplasty might give an influence on the recovery of single limb standing balance.

Prevalence of Potential Cytochrome P450 Pharmacokinetic Incident Drug-Drug Interactions(DDI) Among...

Osteoarthritis

Using a retrospective database analysis, OA patients taking at least one CYP450-metabolized opioid (codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, methadone, oxycodone, or tramadol) and at least one other prescription drug metabolized via the CYP450 system were evaluated for an incident drug-drug exposure (DDE), which places them at risk for experiencing a pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction (DDI).

A Study of FolateScan in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis

The purpose of this study is to evaluate 99mTc - EC20 imaging (FolateScan), a Nuclear Medicine imaging technology that enables localization of activated macrophages in the joints of participants with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Twenty five participants with symptomatic unilateral or bilateral knee OA will undergo a one-time evaluation of the knee as follows: knee radiography, FolateScan of the knees and whole body, musculoskeletal exam, questionnaires, sampling of blood, urine and synovial fluid for analysis of inflammatory markers. Data analysis will be cross-sectional and include a comparison of the location and intensity of EC20 uptake with the following: radiographic knee OA severity, clinical measures of disease severity, cytokine expression, and synovial fluid cell count.

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes and Performance of Total Knee Replacement Patients Before and After...

Degenerative Joint DiseaseOsteoarthritis5 more

This study is to determine the relevancy of clinical scales for outcome measures as compared to flexion angle and other gait measures. Clinical outcomes measures in the form of the Knee Society Score and the WOMAC Score will be obtained from patients. Gait data will also be obtained from total knee replacement (TKR) patients at pre-operative and post-operative times. Gait data will be measured on unaffected normal controls as a second baseline. The hypothesis is that the subjects clinical outcome measures do not accurately reflect gait dependent outcomes amd functional performance of the total knee replacement.

Weight-Bearing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for Analysis of Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis

The purpose of the study is to use different x-ray and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques to take pictures of the knee. There are two specific purposes to the study: whether the different x-ray and MRI techniques will give the same or different information about the knee joint and which part of the knee joint will show the biggest change using the different x-ray and MRI techniques. The study is not designed to test a hypothesis.

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most frequent musculoskeletal disorders and represents the main indication for total joint arthroplasty. Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) can be easily isolated and culture expanded from bone marrow aspirates and provide an excellent source of progenitor cells for cell-based regeneration strategies due to their ex vivo differentiation and proliferation capacity. Although there are hints that MSCs derived from OA patients may exhibit altered function the role of MSCs with respect to disease development and progression of OA is not clearly understood to date. To assess whether advanced-stage OA affects MSCs' suitability for musculoskeletal regenerative therapy, in the present study, we compare proliferation and differentiation potential of MSCs from osteoarthritic versus healthy donors.

Prediction of Outcomes Following Total Knee Replacement

Osteoarthritis

This is an observational study (not a treatment study) of pain and physical functioning after total knee replacement. The study includes 5 visits, 1 before surgery and 4 after surgery. You may be eligible if you are 50 or older, will soon be undergoing knee replacement surgery, do not have a serious heart condition or certain other medical conditions, and are not taking certain types of medications. The study includes evaluation of peoples' pain, physical functioning, medication use, and physiological responses to sensory stimuli such as heat and cold.
