Posture and Pulmonary Function of Mouth-breathing Children
Mouth BreathingThe purpose of this study is to characterize the posture and respiratory function of mouth-breathing children.
Studying Fetal Breathing Patterns
PregnancySome babies have difficulty breathing, sucking, and swallowing at birth. The purpose of this study is to determine (before birth) the variables that will predict whether a newborn will experience these problems. Study participants will be pregnant women with a single fetus who are 18 years or older and who are scheduled to receive a standard prenatal ultrasound. Researchers will use the ultrasound to observe fetal motions associated with breathing, sucking, and swallowing on digital videotape. They will then review these tapes and take measurements that will help them document how breathing and swallowing develop.
Respiratory Muscle Training in ICU Patients
Critical IllnessInspiratory Muscle Strength2 moreRespiratory muscle weakness is common after mechanical ventilation and occurs early. This can limit functional recovery. Respiratory muscle training is often neglected in clinical practice. Some data indicates that inspiratory muscle training increases inspiratory muscle strength and quality of life. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of combined inspiratory and expiratory muscle training on inspiratory muscle strength. The second aim is to assess the impact of this training program on expiratory muscle strength.
Pain and Abdominal Breathing Exercises
AnalgesiaBreathingPostoperative evaluation of patients who did and did not do preoperative abdominal breathing exercises.
Evaluating Deep Breathing in Health Participants Using a Device Called Impulse Oscillometry
BreathingMouth1 moreThis study will determine if resistance of the airway to airflow and pressure, measured by Impulse Oscillometry, is impacted by a deep breathe maneuver in a small cohort of healthy human subjects.
Clinical Practice of Inhalation Anesthesia With Sevoflurane in China
AnesthesiaGeneralUntil recently, there was a lack of understanding and consensus among Chinese anesthesiologists how they should practice general anesthesia with volatile anesthetics, since there was no standard of inhalation practice. In August 2011, the Anesthesiology branch of the Chinese Medical Association launched the first version of Chinese Consensus of Standard Clinical Practice for Inhalation Anesthesia (Consensus) in order to standardize the practice in China. The proposed registry is aimed to evaluate the current inhalation practice one year after the Consensus has been released, and related patient outcome. This registry evaluated sevoflurane anesthesia, including screening, induction, maintenance, emergence, and follow-up within 24 hours post-operation.
SNIF (Sniff Nasal Inspiratory Force) Reference Values Of Mediterranean Population
Healthy People ProgramsSNIF test has been described as a method to explore the diaphragmatic function. But there are no defined the reference values of this test in healthy population. The investigators' hypothesis is that there is a variation on SNIF values in Mediterranean population depending on gender, age and anthropometric variables such as height and weight. The investigators will analyze 1000 SNIF test of healthy people. The investigators will divide in 5 groups of age (20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70) and in each group the investigators will study 100 men and 100 women. All the subjects will perform a forced spirometry, maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and SNIF. If spirometry and MIP are correct the investigators will consider that person has a correct diaphragmatic function and strength. Then the investigators will measure the SNIF test. With all of these SNIF values the investigators will try to achieve the reference values of this test in the different groups of age in Mediterranean population. And the investigators will compare SNIF with MIP. Cross multicentric study. Hospitals involved: Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital del Mar, Hospital Parc Taulí, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (coordinator center) and Hospital de la Vall d'Hebrón.
Continuous and Discontinuous Determination of Propofol Concentration in Breathing Gas
General AnesthesiaThis study should compare the propofol concentration in breathing gas and in plasma (before and) after lung passage. Propofol concentrations in breathing gas are continuously measured by a sensor. For comparison a discontinuous method is used. Neurophysiologic parameters for determination of depth of anesthesia are compared to the continuous measured propofol concentration in breathing gas. Study hypothesis: continuous measured propofol concentration in breathing gas correlates to propofol concentration in plasma and depth of anaesthesia.
Aztreonam Lysine for Inhalation in Patients With Cystic Fibrosis and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Airway...
Cystic FibrosisPseudomonas Aeruginosa Airway InfectionThe primary objective of this program is to provide expanded access to aztreonam lysine for inhalation (AZLI) 75 mg prior to its commercial availability to patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic P. aeruginosa airway infection who have limited treatment options and are at risk for disease progression.
