The purpose of the study is to explore the value which cough rate might provide for asthma self-management. In this study, the focus will be specifically on nocturnal cough rate. The plan is to use a longitudinal study design, in order to investigate to which extent trends in the nocturnal cough rates might have meaningful implications for future asthma control and asthma exacerbations of patients. The incidence of nocturnal cough in asthmatics will be described and visualized over the course of one month in the first stage of the study. Additionally, the aim will be to identify and model trends in nocturnal cough rates. Measuring cough is very time-consuming. Currently, there are no cough frequency monitors available, which measure cough rates in a fully automated and unobtrusive way. Consequently, manual labeling of cough based on video or sound recordings is still considered to be the gold standard for measuring cough rates by medical guidelines. Recently, a machine learning algorithm was successfully designed to automatically detect cough in a proof of concept study. This machine learning algorithm will be further developed in order to provide robust results in the field. The focus of this study will be the cough during the night time due to the limited interfering noise, which greatly facilitates manual labeling and enables a more reliable detection rate of the machine learning algorithm. Apart from developing a machine learning algorithm for cough detection, data will be gathered for the assessment of patient's sleep quality based on data obtained from smartphone's sensors.

Background: Asthma is still considered a major chronic respiratory disease that affects a large number in the world. The association between COVID-19 infection and asthma was studied in different ways focusing on hospital admitted patients. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between asthma and COVID-19 infection in adults attending outpatient pulmonary clinic over three successive months from clinical and laboratory point of view. Patients and methods: The current study collected 1309 patients attending the outpatient pulmonary clinic of a Saudi Arabian private Hospital over three successive months from 1st of December 2020 to the end of February 2021. Patients were divided into three groups; Group 1: COVID-19 infected with asthma (312), Group 2: COVID-19 infected with no asthma (286) and Group 3: COVID-19 non-infected with asthma (300).

This study aimed at evaluating the clinical characteristics of patients who had single and multiple hospitalizations for asthma exacerbations, and exploring the risk factors that predict multiple hospitalizations.

Identifying Patients With the COPD-Asthma Overlap Phenotype: Therapeutic Implications

Background: Asthma and COPD are considered different diseases but many patients share characteristics of both entities. This has been termed "COPD-asthma overlap syndrome". Study objective: To examine: (a) the frequency of the overlap phenotype among patients referred for pulmonary function testing and, (b) the impact of this phenotype on the therapeutic management and the quality of life of these patients as compared with patients with COPD only and asthma only. Methods: Type of study: Observational, cross-sectional. Study subjects: Patients referred for pulmonary function test diagnosed with airway obstruction (FEV1/FVC < 0.7) willing to sign an informed consent. Study procedures: Spirometry will be performed before and after the administration of a bronchodilator. Respiratory questionnaire: Questionnaires about smoking habits, past history of asthma and wheezing, current medications and history of exacerbations will be administered at inclusion. Questionnaire on medication utilization will be administered by telephone one month after inclusion. Quality of life: Will be assessed using the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Working definitions: The following definitions will be adopted: a) COPD only: smoking history > 10 pack/years and post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV1/FVC ratio of < 0.70; b) Asthma only: (1) presence of wheezing in the last year plus a minimum post-BD increase in FEV1 or FVC of 12% and 200 ml; (2) prior physician diagnosis (before age 40); and c) both COPD-Asthma (the overlap group) - the combination of the two. Outcome measures: The clinical outcome is the prevalence rate of the phenotypes. Patient-reported outcomes will include the utilization of medication, the number of exacerbations, and quality of life.
