Impact of Sleep Duration on Immune Balance in Urban Children With Asthma

Asthma in ChildrenSleep Hygiene2 more

Urban children with asthma are at high risk for short sleep, due to an environment that jeopardizes both sleep and asthma management. Further, urban children with asthma suffer from altered immune balance, a key biological process contributing to individual differences in asthma morbidity and sleep health. In the proposed research, the researchers will examine the effects of shortened and recovery sleep on immune balance and associated changes in lung function in urban children with allergic asthma through an experimental design.

Breathing Exercises in Asthma Targeting Dysfunctional Breathing

Dysfunctional Breathing in Asthma

Dyspnoe can disable patients with asthma. Dysfunctional breathing (DB), resulting in dyspnoe, can mimic or exaggerate asthma. Around every forth patient with asthma have DB. Breathing exercises (BrEX) can improve asthma-related quality of live (QOL) in less severe asthma. No study has investigated the effect of BrEX on QOL neither on level of physical activity in severe asthma. A randomised controlled multicentre trial will include 190 adults with poor asthma control (Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ6)-score≥0.8) from seven outpatient departments and one specialized private clinic. Patients will be allocated to either usual care (no intervention) or breathing exercises (BrEX)-treatment consisting of 12-week intervention including three physiotherapist-sessions focusing on breathing pattern modification (Papworth Method; Buteyko technique) in rest and activity and 10 minutes home-exercise twice daily. Primary outcome is change in Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (MiniAQLQ) at six-months follow-up.

Antibiotic Treatment of Recurrent Episodes of Asthma in Children

Childhood Asthma With Acute Exacerbation

Copsac has discovered that asthmatic exacerbations are as closely linked to bacterial as to viral infection. The current study will examine whether treatment of asthmatic exacerbations with macrolide antibiotics - in the abscence of clear clinical bacterial infection which would in any case precipitate antibiotic treatment - has an effect on either the particular episode, or subsequently. Macrolide antibiotics are chosen for ease of administration ensuring high compliance, antibiotic appropriacy, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Intralymphatic Immunotherapy With Polvac Grass & Rye Allergen Extract

RhinitisAllergic6 more

The primary goal is to investigate the efficacy of intralymphatic immunotherapy (ILIT) for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma due to sensitisation to grass pollen allergens. 60 patients with allergic rhinitis will be included and randomized to receive either Polvac (n=30) or placebo (n=30). All patients will receive three injections with 4-8 weeks interval. The injections into a inguinal lymph node is guided by sonography. Patients will record symptoms and medication use in the summer of 2022 and 2023.

Measures for Bioaerosol Reduction in the Salmon Industry

AsthmaOccupational1 more

Workers in the salmon industry are at risk of developing allergies and respiratory diseases, including asthma, due to occupational exposure to bioaerosols, i.e. biological agents such as allergens, enzymes and endotoxins, in their work environment. The overall objective of this intervention trial is to identify effective and feasible control measures (interventions) that reduce exposure to these bioaerosols. The project comprises nine salmon processing factories in northern, central and western Norway. The factories are allocated to either one of the two intervention arms or the control group. In all factories, an assessment of exposure to bioaerosols will be performed. In addition, employees will be invited to undergo a health examination and fill out a self-administered questionnaire including information on demographics, work tasks, health and health promoting factors. The intervention trial is part of a broader study that comprises several substudies including the identification of clinically relevant allergens, investigation of exposure-response relationship between the exposure to individual bioactive agents in bioaerosols and investigations of prevalence of airway symptoms, altered lung function, skin symptoms or immunological responses indicating hypersensitivity. Finally the project includes the identification of health promoting factors that are present in the salmon processing industry. The project is an interdisciplinary multi-center study that places great emphasis on a close dialogue between the researchers and industry in all phases of the project.
