Mindfulness for Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The current study examines the efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to reduce parenting stress, lessen parental reactivity and negativity, and decrease child externalizing behaviors among families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The design is a randomized controlled trial of 138 families of preschool-aged children with ASD. Parents of children with ASD will be randomized to MBSR or to a Psychoeducational (PE) support control group matched for clinical contact and dosage (see details on interventions below). Families will participate in laboratory assessments at baseline and immediately post-treatment, as well as at 6 months and 12 months post-treatment. Measures include standardized and validated parent and teacher questionnaires, gold-standard psychological assessments, and observational and interview ratings.

CPI Training for Parents of Children With ASD

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The purpose of this 24-week study is to determine whether the "Parent-based Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) physical management training program" (i.e., P-CPI) is effective in increasing self-efficacy in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

A Study to Investigate the Safety, Tolerability, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Food Effect...

Autistic DisorderAutism Spectrum Disorder4 more

This study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of single- and multiple-ascending doses (SAD (Part 1) and MAD (Part 2)) and food effect (FE) of RO6953958 following oral administration in healthy male participants. Part 3 (Drug-drug interaction (DDI)) will assess the safety, tolerability, and effect of RO6953958 on the PK of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A substrate midazolam.

Video Assisted Speech Technology to Enhance Motor Planning for Speech

Autism Spectrum DisorderApraxia of Speech

Nearly 3.5 million Americans are diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a communication disorder that causes skill limitations in the areas of language acquisition, sensory integration, and behavior. This lack of functional language ability limits conversation to its most basic parts, making daily tasks difficult for minimally to non-verbal individuals to achieve. iTherapy is developing the VAST platform, a personalized educational experience for students with ASD by creating a virtual reality-based video-modeling program to stimulate engagement and speech production practice, ultimately providing those with ASD an opportunity to enhance their quality of life by increasing their speech abilities which will enable them to build social networks and handle the events of daily life.

Examining the Efficacy of the T-STEP

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The objective of this study is to evaluate the TEACCH School Transition to Employment and Post-Secondary Education (T-STEP) Program. Through randomized assignment young adults (18-21 year-old) with ASD will participate in the full T-STEP Program or a counseling only condition. Effectiveness will be assessed by caregiver report (social communication, executive function, employment readiness), self-report (self-determination, coping, depression), and behavioral observation (i.e., a mock employment experience). The long-term impact of this intervention is to promote a more positive quality of life for young adults with high functioning ASD including increased postsecondary education completion, employment, self-determination, and decreased difficulties with coping and depression.

Intranasal Inhalations of M2 Macrophage Soluble Factors in Children With Developmental Speech Disorders...

Language DelayLanguage; Developmental Disorder6 more

The investigators have designed an innovative proof-of-concept trial designed to provide data as to whether the speech difficulties in children with developmental dysphasia (DD) are improved with intranasal inhalations of bioactive factors (BF), produced by macrophages of M2 phenotype (M2-BFs). The rationale for this approach is the ability of central nervous system (CNS) to repair and the important role of macrophages in the regulation of this process. It was found that type 2 macrophages (M2) have anti-inflammatory and neurorestorative potential, in contrast to pro-inflammatory and neurotoxic effects of М1 cells. The influence of M2 is largely realized through the production of a wide spectrum of bioactive factors (cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, neuropeptides, microvesicles etc) that inhibit inflammation, protect neurons from apoptosis, stimulate neurogenesis, the growth and remyelination of axons, the formation of new synapses and activate angiogenesis. This study uses M2-BFs, as therapeutic tool, and intranasal administration focusing on nose to brain transport, as a mode of delivery. Expected clinical effects in treated children: improvement of speech understanding, word formation, grammatical structure of speech and formation of coherent speech.

Oral Administration of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) for 6 Months in Chronically Constipated Autistic...

Autistic Spectrum DisorderConstipation

Many autistic children suffer from chronic constipation. Gut mobilization was obtained administering polyethylene glycol (PEG) at the dose of 6.9 g/d once a day for 6 months in an open trial involving 21 chronically constipated autistic children 2-8 years old, followed prospectively for 6 months. Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder by DSM-5 and confirmed by ADOS-2 criteria, were evaluated before (T0), 1 month (T1), and 6 months (T2) after intestinal mobilization, recording Bristol stool scale scores, urinary p-cresol concentrations, and behavioral scores for social interaction deficits, stereotypic behaviors, anxiety, and hyperactivity.
