Active Ingredients & Efficacy of Aquatic Therapy for Autistic Children
Autism Spectrum DisorderAccidental drowning is the number one cause of death in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and highlights the critical need for swim lessons and water safety training for this population. Our team has developed and tested an innovative, occupational therapy (OT) based aquatic program - AquOTic - that provides preliminary support for the use of an individualized swim skills training intervention in children with ASD. The AquOTic program uses a combination of sensory, motor learning, and behavioral approaches to improve water safety and swim skills. In this study, we will use a randomized control trial design to identify the efficacy of the AquOTic intervention to improve swim performance in children with ASD.

Psychiatric DisorderGenetic analyses conducted on patient with psychiatric disorders assessed at the expert centres resulted in the identific action of genetic variants associated with psychiatric disorders (Courtois, 2020). These data require further genetic and functional analyses. The first objective of this study is to investigate the disease-related inheritance of genetic variants in the families of individuals in whom these variants have been identified. The second objective is to explore the functional consequences of disease-associated genetic variants in patients cells and those of their relatives with and without these variants. The present project aims to enrich existing biocollections with DNA from blood or saliva from relatives of patients identified with genetic variants. In addition, we wish to collect hair follicules from patients with identified genetic variants of interest and their family members who wish to participate in the study. These hair samples with SNA will be used to dedifferentiate the isolated cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs), and then to differentiate them into cells expressing the gene of interest, such as neurons or astrocytes, or into more complex systems, such as brain organoids.

This randomized controlled trial will recruit a sample of 20 autistic children as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria, through convenient sampling. The sample will be then randomly allocated to control group receiving the conventional dexterity training exercises and Intervention group which will be receiving conventional plus exergaming intervention.
Naturalistic Teaching Strategies in Children With Autism
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe study will show the effect of naturalistic teaching strategies and picture exchange communication systems in children with an autism spectrum disorder. There will be two groups in this study. One control group and the other experimental group. One group will be provided with the naturalistic teaching strategies and pecs therapy both and the other group will be provided with the PECS therapy. The research will be conducted within the duration of six months after the approval from BASR. The two groups will be first assessed using the portage early education program and pecs manual. After 20 sessions of respective therapeutic techniques, both of the groups will be reassessed. The results of both of the groups will be then compared and conclusions will be drawn.
The Effect of High Selenium Functional Food and Selenium Supplement
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe prevalence of ASD is increasing every year. Report data from the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) 1: 68 in 2016 means that out of 68 children, there is 1 child with ASD, while in 2017 it increased by 1: 36, meaning that out of 36 children there is 1 child with ASD1. ASD in men is 4 times greater than in women. This study used Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials (RCT), double blind, 65 research subjects randomized to provide intervention for 3 months in group 1 (n = 22) processed beef liver high in selenium, group 2 (n = 22) supplemented with selenium, group 2 (n = 22) supplemented with selenium, group 1 (n = 22) 3 (n=21) control group. Outcome of ATEC score measurement in the three groups. Major hypothesis There is a difference in the comparison of giving high selenium functional food (HSFF) with selenium supplements to decreasing ATEC scores in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children, increasing levels of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and decreasing IL-β, IL-6 and TNF-α . Minor Hypothesis. a. There was a decrease in the ATEC score of ASD children in the intervention group of processed beef liver high in selenium, selenium supplementation compared to the control group b. The difference in the increase in GPx enzyme levels in the intervention group processed beef liver high in selenium, selenium supplementation compared to the control group in ASD children. c. Differences in decreased levels of IL-1β in the intervention group processed beef liver high in selenium, selenium supplementation compared to the control group with ASD.d. Differences in decreased levels of IL-6 in the intervention group processed high-selenium beef liver, selenium supplementation compared to the control group with ASD children. e. Differences in decreased levels of TNF- in the intervention group processed beef liver high in selenium, selenium supplementation compared to the control group with ASD children. Participants were randomized into three groups: Intervention group 1 high selenium functional food (n=22), Intervention 2 selenium supplement and group 3 control (n=21).
Effect of a 9-Month Internship Intervention for Military Dependents With ASD
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe aims of the project are: 1. VCU will modify the Project SEARCH Plus ASD Model to meet the needs of military dependents with ASD. 2. VCU will implement the intervention based upon the Project SEARCH plus ASD Supports manual and will measure fidelity of implementation. 3. VCU will measure the impact of the intervention on the social communication, behavioral adjustment and employment outcomes of the military dependents who participate compared to an equal control group who do not receive the intervention. Aim 1 is accomplished, and Aims 2 and 3 have been implemented. The Project SEARCH program is currently in its second year at the 773rd Mission Support Group, Joint Base Langley Eustis, Fort Eustis site. Additionally, all recruitment activities were completed for the second cohort of the project, with a total of 14 treatment group participants and 21 control group participants across the two cohorts thus far. In addition, all collaborating agencies have signed the memorandum of understanding. The relocation and deployment plan is currently is being piloted.
Comparing Behavioral Assessments Using Telehealth for Children With Autism
Autism Spectrum DisorderThe main purpose of this study is to determine the most efficient way for families to reduce problem behavior in their children with an autism spectrum disorder. Parents will be trained using telehealth to use applied behavior analysis (ABA) procedures to improve child behavior and communication. The study compares an established type of ABA assessment and treatment to a briefer, more streamlined version of this same type of assessment/treatment.
Targeting Sleep in Kids With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum DisorderChronic InsomniaChildren with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and insomnia, and their parent(s) will undergo 8 sessions of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy designed for Children with Chronic Insomnia and ASD (CBT-CI-A). Treatment delivery will be assessed for each session. Treatment receipt will be assessed at the end of session 3. Treatment enactment will be assessed throughout treatment, post-treatment, and follow-up. Sleep and secondary outcomes (child daytime behavior, parent sleep) will be collected at baseline, post-treatment, and 1-month follow-up.
