ElopementAutism Spectrum DisorderThe purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of the Elopement Prevention Safety (EPST) program in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have engaged in eloping. This is a program created by the Behavior Treatment Clinics to help caregivers come up with a safety plan to prevent their children from running away or wandering off.
Effect of a Social Script iPAD Application for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder
AnxietyThe purpose of the research is to test the effectiveness of the social story intervention delivered using the iPAD application "Going to Imaging" on the anxiety, challenging child behaviors, child injuries and completion rates among children with ASD undergoing medical imaging procedures. A secondary purpose is to test the effect of this intervention on the anxiety levels of the parents of ASD children undergoing medical imaging procedures. Hypotheses: H1: Children with ASD who are exposed to a story book "Here the investigators go to medical imaging (x-ray)" to prepare for medical imaging compared with children with ASD exposed to treatment as usual (TAU) will have: Lower anxiety as measured by heart rate respiratory rate, and blood pressure (baseline compared to up to two hours later). Exhibit fewer challenging behaviors as measured by a behavior observation scale (developed for the study (up to 2 hours after baseline) Higher procedure completion rate. Shorter time to complete a procedure. Less child injuries. H2: Compared to parents of ASD children exposed to treatment as usual (TAU), parents of children with ASD who are exposed to a story book "Here the investigators go to medical imaging (x-ray)" to prepare for medical imaging will have: Lower state anxiety as measured by the State Anxiety Inventory ( baseline ).

Method: We measured static postural control with center of pressure (COP) displacement in 10 children with mild autism during eight sensory conditions that challenge and cancel the visual, proprioceptive and vestibular systems.

AutismThe purpose of this study is to determine if treatment of epileptiform abnormalities in children with autism spectrum disorder will improve any behaviors in these children. The investigators will study a number of different behavioral outcomes including behaviors related to attention, social communication, repetitive behaviors, maladaptive behaviors, language, motor and sensory, and sleep. The investigators will use an anticonvulsant medication called valproic acid (in the form of sodium divalproex).
The Swedish Versions of ADOS and ADI-R: Psychometric Validation
Autism Spectrum DisordersAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) are early onset chronic conditions coined by deficits in social reciprocity, communication and stereotypic interests and activities. Other functional impairments such as mental retardation, ADHD, known genetic syndromes and epilepsy are frequent coexisting problems. ASD cause considerable suffering for the affected individuals and burden for their families. With an estimated prevalence exceeding 1%, recent population-based studies suggest that ASD are no rare phenomena. Lifetime societal costs for services and support, together with the opportunity costs of lost productivity in a prototypic developed country are estimated SEK 15.6 million for someone with and SEK 10.3 million for a person without co-existing mental retardation. Despite ongoing efforts, no diagnostically informative biomarker has yet been identified for ASD. The development, refinement and evaluation of behavioral assessment tools has therefore been decisive to progress and quality assurance in ASD clinical practice and research. The most widely used and thoroughly evaluated instruments for ASD in international child mental health are the Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). The ADI-R and ADOS are deemed highly by the ASD expert community and thus commonly labeled as being the "gold standard" in ASD diagnostics. Although, Swedish translations of the ADI-R and ADOS exist, a Swedish standardization and cross-cultural validation is still lacking, impeding good clinical practice and research prerequisites for ASD in Sweden. The applied project seeks to broadly establish reliability and validity of the Swedish translations of the ADI-R and ADOS in order to enhance evidence-based clinical practice and stimulate internationally competitive ASD research in Sweden.
Oral Health Promotion Among Preschool Children With Special Needs
Intellectual DisabilityCerebral Palsy7 moreEstablishing good oral health-related habit is challenging among younger children, especially for preschool children with special needs, as they have physical, mental, sensory, behavioural, emotional, and chronic medical conditions that requires health care beyond the routines. Existing evidences showed that children with special needs have poorer oral health status and more challenging behaviours than their counterparts in main stream schools. Visual pedagogy, such as social stories, have been applied to teach a variety of skills or behaviours to individuals with special needs. They are short stories demonstrating the target skill or behaviour, and then the readers are expected to perform the target skill or behaviour following the demonstrations. Giving the evidence that children with special needs can understand complex situations and learn new practices by using those stories, we expect to apply a package of structured social stories to modify oral health-related behaviours (tooth brushing, healthy eating, dental visit), and thereby, improve oral health status among preschool children with special needs. Establishment of good oral-health related behaviours in early childhood will benefits children in their future life. Additionally, visual pedagogy-assisted oral health education is relatively easy and safe to implement. If proven effective, social story-based preventive care can be recommended to special children globally.
