Early Connections, Early Detection and Intervention in Infants at Risk for Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Early connections has two broad goals: to identify risk indices for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in 6 to 24 month old infants who have an older sibling with ASD or infants who have an older neurotypical sibling. to assess whether it is possible to alter risk processes through early intervention with high-risk infants, thereby reducing social-communication delays or the severity of autism symptoms.

Person-Centered Assessment and Monitoring Systems

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The proposed study will include an analysis of data for residents of Pennsylvania who are age 21 and older, have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and are enrolled in the Commonwealth's Adult Community Autism Program (ACAP). The individuals enrolled in the program will be administered a standardized assessment battery quarterly for two years. The proposed study will analyze the data gathered during each of the assessment periods in order to aid in service/treatment planning, assess for individual improvements, and ultimately measure treatment outcomes.

A Pilot Study to Characterize the Household Impact of Locating Devices for Children With ASD Who...

Autism Spectrum DisorderWandering Behavior

This pilot study will obtain preliminary data about the impact of wearable electronic tracking devices (ETDs) as an intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who wander. The feasibility of all study procedures and the acceptability of the intervention will be evaluated.

Real and Virtual Environments in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are known to have difficulty with socio-communicative functioning and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests, and there is considerable evidence that the majority also struggle with associated emotional problems. Speech is typically delayed or may regress, comprehension is impaired, if not at the word level, then at the level of sentences, nonverbal and verbal language are affected, and pretend play is delayed or absent, some children are nonverbal or have sparse, impoverished, poorly articulated, and grammatical speech. Objective: To assess in which interface has ASD best performance or functionality. Method: Will be evaluated 100 individuals divided into two groups: 50 individuals with diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD-group), aged 7 to 15 years old, males and females; and 50 individuals with typical development (TD-group) matched by age and sex to the ASD-group. Individuals with comorbidities and functional disabilities that would impede the completion of the task were excluded.

Autism & Anesthetic Exposure Study

Autism Spectrum Disorder

As anesthesia is often needed for childhood surgery and procedures, researchers have examined the potential effects of anesthesia on neurodevelopment. There are few studies that have examined the effect of anesthesia on neurodevelopment in children with confirmed diagnoses of ASD, and the results of these studies are mixed. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders can have age-dependent variations in brain anatomy, function, and connectivity, which may alter their sensitivity to the potential neurotoxic effects of anesthetic and sedative drugs. Given the potential adverse neurodevelopmental effects of anesthesia on typically developing children, it is important to examine if anesthesia exposure can worsen the clinical course of ASD.

Piloting a Mobile Game for Behavioral Therapy

Autism Spectrum DisorderAutism

The following study aims to understand the feasibility of the mobile app and game, GuessWhat, to deliver behavioral therapy to children with autism. The GuessWhat app is a charades style game that engages parent and child in fluid social interaction where the parent must guess what the child is acting out based on the prompt shown on the phone screen. Participants will use their own personal phone to download the study app. The app will walk participants through a variety of charades style games. The interactive games will be video recorded and all data are transferred securely to the Wall Lab for analysis. This study is enrolling parents of children with ASD who are at least 18 years of age and have a child between 3-12 years old. Parents are asked to complete questionnaires before and after playing the GuessWhat game with their child 3-4 times per week for 4 weeks.

Teens with ASD ages 14-19 will be screened for eligibility, complete a baseline interviewer/ACASI-administered survey, and randomly assigned to either intervention or control group. The enrollment goal is 500 teens. The 12-hour intervention will be run in groups of up to 12 teens, with health educators leading the group and actors assisting, role playing with participants, and performing a skit. Teens in the intervention group will take a post satisfaction survey, and teens in both conditions will take a 6-month and 12-month interviewer/ACASI-administered outcome survey. Fidelity will be monitored by observers and rated by health educators.

Study to Compare Verbal Scores of Children Diagnosed With ASD Who Received Hyperbaric Treatment...

Autism Spectrum Disorder

A child's ability to effectively communicate with peers, parents, and caregivers impacts their level of independence and quality of personal relationships. This retrospective study will compare the speech development of participants aged 2 - 17 years that received 40 sessions of HBOT at 2.0 ATA to those who had not. Both groups will have a verbal assessment every six months. There were 32 subjects in the HBO group and 33 subjects in the non-HBO group. The statistical analysis will focus on whether Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy made a significant difference in Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) or Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS) results.

The Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic On The Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism With High Cognitive AbilitiesCOVID-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 outbreak has caused families and individuals to change their life routines and eating habits, and has affected their psychology, especially for children with autism, due to the change in their routines. These psychological changes may trigger the self-harming behavior that is very common in children with autism. Dental trauma, a common problem in children and adolescents, can also be seen in individuals who need special care such as autism. The aim of this study is to evaluate the susceptibility of children with autism to orofacial trauma during the pandemic period and compare them with the pre-pandemic period and the healthy group, as well as to question the lifestyle, nutritional habits, mood changes and oral health behaviors that may be related to the risk of trauma.
