Improving Attention Skills of Children With Autism

Autism

Toddlers with autism have poor joint attention skills. Joint attention skills include pointing to objects, following another person's gaze, and responding to invitations to join in a social interaction. Improved joint attention skills may lead to better verbal ability as the child ages. This study teaches caregivers how to help their toddlers with autism develop joint attention skills.

Joint Attention-Based Occupational Therapy Intervention in Pre-Schoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder...

Autism Spectrum DisorderSocial Communication2 more

In order to support the development of preschool children, joint attention training with activities incorporated in their natural routines can support the achievement of occupational therapy goals. This study explores the adjunctive benefit of a joint attention-based occupational therapy program offered in addition to the usual special education program (USEP) compared to USEP alone. The present study was designed as a randomized controlled study, including pre-post testing. The Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ), Autism Behaviour Checklist (ABC), and A Motor-Free Visual Perception Test 4 (MVPT-4) were implemented to measure the participants' conditions before and after the intervention.

Building Social Skills With Interdisciplinary Process Drama in ASD

Autistic Disorder

This is a one group pre-post feasibility study of an interdisciplinary (theatre, Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Language Pathology (SLP)) intervention targeted at social skill development in children, aged 3-4. The intervention uses process drama modified with OT and SLP techniques and using typically developing peer models . Feasibility outcomes are recruitment rates, retention rates, daily program records of ease of implementing the program, and record of modifications needed. Child primary outcomes are Social Skills Improvement Scale (SSIS) and the Theory of Mind (ToM) Battery and Inventory within 4 weeks of program end. Secondary outcomes will be the Structured Play Assessment (SPA) within 4 weeks post-intervention, observations of social interactions (e.g.,eye contract, joint attention, verbal utterances, physical contact) during intervention sessions, brain activity in frontal and temporal/parietal areas during ToM tasks measured by high density EEG within 4 weeks of program end, and parental interview at 3 months related to child's social skills.

Comparison of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Versus ABA and Risperidone

Autistic Disorder

Hypotheses: Preschool children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) who undergo ABA treatment only will demonstrate significantly better outcomes compared to an age and severity matched control group without ABA treatment. Preschool children with ASDs who undergo ABA in combination with risperidone will demonstrate significantly better outcomes compared to age and severity matched children who are receiving ABA alone. Young age, cognitive development and attentional abilities at baseline will be predictive of good socio-emotional and neuropsychological outcomes after ABA treatment. At baseline, children with ASDs will show significantly lower performances on measures of cognitive, neuropsychological, and socio-emotional functioning than age-matched typically developing controls.
