Making Better Lives: Patient-Focused Care for Low Back Pain (LBP)
Chronic Low Back PainHip Ostearthritis11 moreBack pain is a huge problem for millions of Americans, including nearly 11 million Veterans. Our older Veterans suffer the most. Citizens spend billions of dollars, yet consistently get poor results. Primary Care Providers are often tasked with diagnosing and treating Chronic Low Back Pain, even though they are often undereducated in the field. These PCPs often use advanced imaging, usually MRIs to guide care. These images often show degenerative disc disease and other common pathologies in older adults, even those who are pain free, which can lead to misdiagnosis and treatment. The investigators believe that Chronic Low Back Pain is a syndrome, a final common pathway for the expression of multiple contributors that often lie outside the spine itself. For example, hip osteoarthritis, knee pain, and even anxiety could all lessen back pain if addressed and treated probably. Investigators will measure participants' low back pain-associated disability with the well-validated RMDQ. Data will be collected at baseline and monthly via telephone. The investigators hypothesize that veterans who receive PCCET will experience significantly greater reduction in low back pain-associated disability than those who receive IAUC at six months. Investigators will also measure participants' low back pain with the 0-10 Numeric Rating Scale for Pain. Data will be collected at baseline and monthly via telephone. The investigators hypothesize that veterans who receive PCCET will experience significantly greater reduction in low back pain than those who receive IAUC at six months. The goal of this study is to compare patients treated with usual care, which usually starts with imaging, versus patients who are treated by trained geriatricians who know how to recognize and address 11 key conditions that commonly drive pain and disability in older adults. The investigators believe that older patients who receive care tailored to their needs by educated PCPs will ultimately have less back pain and, more importantly, better quality of life.
MOBile Instruction for Low Back Pain (MOBIL)
Low Back PainThe purpose of this project is to measure the impact of a short educational session on outcomes for patients consulting in primary care for low back pain. Subjects will be patients consulting to their primary care provider for a primary complaint and new episode of low back pain. Subjects will be randomized to receiving the educational tool versus usual care (information only without an educational component) in the clinic immediately prior to seeing their PCP. Patients will be followed for a 6-month period, and outcome measures will be collected and compared across both groups.
Nonivamide/Nicoboxil Ointment in Acute Low Back Pain
Acute Low Back PainThe aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and tolerability of Nicoboxil/Nonivamide ointment in comparison to Nicoboxil, Nonivamide, and placebo ointments for the treatment of acute low back pain.
Efficacy Study to Evaluate Buprenorphine HCl Buccal Film in Opioid-Experienced Subjects
Low Back PainThe purpose of the study is to determine if buprenorphine hydrochloride (HCl) buccal film is effective in treating opioid-experienced subjects, with moderate to severe chronic low back pain (CLBP), who require continuous around-the-clock (ATC) pain relief for an extended period of time.
Oxycodone DETERx™ Versus Placebo in Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP)
Chronic Low Back PainThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of Oxycodone DETERx compared with placebo in opioid-experienced and opioid-naive subjects with moderate-to-severe chronic low back pain requiring around-the-clock opioid analgesia for an extended period of time.
Effects of Lumbopelvic Manipulation on Neuromuscular Activity of Back & Hip Muscles in Adults With...
Chronic Low Back PainThe purposes of this study are: To examine the within-day and between-day test-retest reliability of a testing protocol measuring the back and hip muscles fatigability using EMG median frequency To examine the immediate and the carry-over effects of the lumbopelvic manipulation on the EMG median frequency of the lumbar multifidus (MULT), gluteus medius (GMED) and gluteus maximus (GMAX) muscles in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) To compare the fatigability levels of the MULT, GMED and GMAX muscles by measuring the EMG median frequency between the participants who will receive lumbopelvic manipulation. The research hypotheses are: The testing protocol using EMG median frequency as a fatigue indicator for MULT,GMED and GMAX muscles will have good (ICC ≥ 0.80) within-day and between-day test-retest reliability. The fatigability level of the MULT, GMED and GMAX muscles will significantly decrease immediately after the lumbopelvic manipulation and will be maintained over two to four days following the manipulation. The fatigability of the MULT, GMED and GMAX muscles will significantly decrease after the intervention in the manipulation group while no change will occur in the placebo group.
Effectiveness of the Addition of the Kinesio Taping Method to Conventional Physical Therapy Treatment...
Nonspecific Chronic Low Back PainThe purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the addition of the use of Kinesio Taping in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain who receive conventional physical therapy.
Open-Label, Extension Study to Evaluate the Safety of Hydrocodone Bitartrate Extended-Release Tablets...
Low Back PainThis is a 6-month, nonrandomized, open-label extension study to assess the long-term safety of hydrocodone bitartrate extended-release (ER) tablets in patients with moderate to severe chronic low back pain who require continuous opioid treatment for an extended period of time. To be eligible for Study 3104, patients were required to have completed the entire double blind treatment period on study drug (either placebo or hydrocodone bitartrate ER tablets) through week 12 of Study 3103 (NCT01789970) and to have met the entry criteria for Study 3104.
Mindful Walking in Low Back Pain
Chronic Low Back PainThe purpose of this study is to determine whether a mindful walking program is effective in the treatment of patients with chronic low back pain.
Efficacy of a Classification Based 'Cognitive Functional Therapy' in Nurses With Non Specific Chronic...
Chronic Low Back PainA series of case-studies to explore the efficacy of classification based cognitive functional physiotherapy according to the classification system proposed by Peter O'Sullivan in specific nursing population with non specific chronic low back pain. The investigators hypothesis was that treatment targeting the mechanisms behind the problem from a multidimensional perspective would be effective to reduce pain, disability and sick-leave.
