Inspiratory Resistive Loading and Proprioceptive Postural Control

Low Back PainRespiratory Loading1 more

Proprioceptive weighting changes may explain differences in postural control performance. In addition, the respiratory movement has a disturbing effect on postural balance. Postural balance seems to be impaired in individuals with respiratory disorders. Besides the essential role of respiration, the diaphragm may also play an important role in the control of the trunk and postural balance. Deficits in proprioception are found in a subgroup of patients with low back pain. In addition, disorders of respiration have been identified as strongly related to low back pain. The aim of the study is to clarify whether loading of the inspiratory muscles has a negative effect upon proprioceptive postural control in healthy individuals and individuals with recurrent low back pain.

Validation of the French Version RTWSE (Return To Work Self Efficacy Scale)

Chronic Low Back Pain

The back pain connected to the work stay a major problem in industrialized countries, in particular because of the repercussions of this affection on the work (sick leave, absenteeism, handicap and inaptitude). It is difficult to consider among all the patients with a Chronic Low Back Pain in the work: how much they are going to stop. However, Investigator can consider that approximately 20 % of the patients have a sick leave. Several studies showed well that more the sick leave work stoppage goes on more the risk of not resumption of work increases. Several risk factors were associated to the evolutionary forecast of the pathology and thus to the extension extra time of the sick leave: individual, environmental, psychosocial and organizational. The evaluation of the self-efficiency perceived of return in the work of the patients by a validated auto-questionnaire is thus an additional objective parameter determining the risk factors of unfavorable evolution of the patients with Low Back Pain. This parameter also allows highlight other levers of actions in the therapeutic education.

The Benefit of Structured Triage of Patients in the Primary Health Care Seeking Care for Low Back...

Low Back Pain

This study aims to investigate if a low back pain screening tool is helpful for the caregivers to direct the rehabilitation in a more efficient way, at an earlier stage. Primary Health care centers in the municipality of Halmstad, Sweden will be enrolled to participate in the study as either "Control" or "intervention". The primary Health care centers who are enrolled taking part in the intervention, will use the provided screening tool when taking care of patients seeking care for low back pain. Scorings from the screening tool will "label" the patients as one of Three pre-defined risk levels. The caregiver will then use the provided risk level when deciding how to proceed the rehabilitation. Based on the risk level identified, the patient is directed to one of three levels of treatments - including simple advice; physiotherapy; or multimodal rehabilitation. The screening tool is used as a complement to the examination, allowing the physiotherapist /GP to decide how to proceed with rehabilitation using the back screening tool, together with Clinical examinations. The Control Group consists of patients recruited when seeking care for back pain at a Primary Health Care service who has been randomly selected as "Control". The care givers at the Control primary Health care will conduct as usual, not using the back pain screening tool in their Clinical examinations.

Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), SF-12 Health Survey, Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ), Global Rating of Change Scale and Back Beliefs Questionnaire (BBQ) are important and widely used validated patient self-reported measures commonly used in clinical trials and health research involving patients with low back pain (LBP). However, to date, validated Hausa versions of these tools are unavailable for use despite not only Hausa language is commonly spoken in Nigeria but in other parts of the world. The purpose of this study is to perform, using evidence-based guidelines, translation, cultural adaptation and validation of the ODI, NPRS, RMDQ, SF-12 health survey, FABQ, PCS, GROC and BBQ into Hausa language among patients with LBP in Northern Nigeria.

Safety of Acupuncture Treatments for Chronic Low Back Pain in Older Adults

Chronic Low Back PainOlder Adults

Acupuncture, along with other complementary and integrative treatments, is commonly used as a complementary or integrative therapy when treating a multitude of pain complaints, including chronic low back pain(CLBP). It has been practiced as a non-pharmacological therapy in the United States over one hundred years. Integrative pain management pilot programs have demonstrated impressive reductions in medications use, emergency room visits, and annual costs of healthcare. In fact, CLBP is one of the most common conditions treated in an acupuncturist's daily schedule. Based on acupuncturists' practice, CLBP has accounted for about 12% of patient visits in recent years. Most CLBP patients who come to acupuncturists' clinic are older adults. Investigators will retrospectively check the safety of acupuncture, i.e.side effects or adverse effects of acupuncture during treatments of CLBP in older adults in past 5 years.
