The Five-repetition Sit-to-stand Test for Lower Back Pain or Radiculopathy

Degenerative Disc DiseaseDegenerative Spondylolisthesis4 more

The five-repetition sit-to-stand test (5R-STS) has been used in many medical disciplines, but has never been correlated with or validated in regard to degenerative spinal diseases. The investigators aim to assess the possibility of using the standardized 5R-STS as an objective measure of functional impairment and pain severity in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal diseases.

National Recommendations and the Actual Rehabilitation Provided for Low Back Pain Patients

Guideline AdherenceLow Back Pain

Purpose and background: The purpose of the study is to investigate physiotherapeutic courses of rehabilitation in the primary sector for low back pain patients. This is done by identifying both how physiotherapeutic rehabilitation is organized in the primary sector and further what different types of physiotherapeutic interventions are offered for this patient group. Furthermore the study aims to evaluate to what extent existing physiotherapeutic rehabilitation practice adheres with the national and international guidelines and recommendations for low back pain rehabilitation. Methods: A quantitative survey is carried out, which includes development and validation of a questionnaire for the purpose, and this is subsequently distributed electronically to private and public providers of physiotherapy rehabilitation in all 19 municipalities in Central Denmark Region. Approximately 500 physiotherapists will be asked to participate in the survey in the period February to March 2018.

Validity of Profile Fitness Mapping Low Back Questionnaire

Low Back PainPain3 more

As patients improve on one parametric result, the results on the other parametric may worsen, but the total score may not be affected. For this reason, it would be useful to make measurements that evaluate all the parameters of the patients. Thus, it would be more advantageous to score both pain and symptoms separately, as well as activity limitations. Therefore, neck specific surveys are needed to meet this need. For this reason, this study was planned to determine the validity of the questionnaire named "Profile Fitness Mapping Low Back Questionnaire" in patients with low back pain.

Electrical Impedance Myography of Neck and Low Back Pain

Low Back PainNeck Pain

The purpose of this study is to assess neck and low back pain using Electrical Impedance Myography (EIM) in order to develop an algorithm to aid primary care providers (PCPs) in the diagnosis of neck/back pain. Secondary goals include the refinement of EIM technology and associated software of ease-of-use and interpretation by PCPs and staff.

Multiplanar Lumbopelvic Control in Patients With Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether combined assessment of lumbopelvic control during sagittal and frontal plane motion (using two common clinical observational assessments) discriminates between people with and without LBP than single plane assessment alone. It was hypothesized that the two tests used in combination (multiplanar) would perform better than each test used independently (single planar) in accurately discriminating patient cases from healthy controls.

The Neural Basis of Lumbosacral Proprioceptive Impairment in Recurrent Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain

Low back pain (LBP) is a well known health problem in Western society that is significantly responsible for socio-economic problems like absenteeism and disability. The lifetime prevalence of LBP is 60-80% and approximately 85% of this LBP has a "non-specific" character whereby the underlying causes and risk factors cannot be demonstrated. While many people recover within a month, most individuals will have recurrence within a year with more severe symptoms. This might be due to insufficient knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. Impaired proprioception, the ability to discern body/limb positions and movements, may cause and maintain LBP shown by an altered postural control strategy. Specifically, patients with LBP rely more on proprioceptive signals from the ankles due to less reliable proprioceptive input of proximal segments. Moreover, they show a decreased variability in postural control and less postural robustness, while variability is a prerequisite for optimal functioning of biological systems. However, further clarification of the neural correlates is necessary. Deficits in proprioception, as found in a subgroup of patient with LBP, are associated with a decreased ability of the brain to process proprioceptive inputs. The aim of this project is to clarify the central changes in individuals with recurrent non-specific low back pain and healthy controls. To evaluate these central changes MRI techniques (3DTFE, DTI and RS-fMRI) will be used. In addition, the association between central changes and postural control tasks will be evaluated.

Psychological Variables in Physiotherapy Treatment of Low Back Pain: A Comparison of Group and Individual...

Low Back Pain

The purpose of the study is to determent whether there is a difference between two types of treatments in physiotherapy (individual vs group) for patients with low back pain (LBP), in terms of their sensation of how they have been helped and their treatments' outcomes measures. The study hypothesizes are: a) Based on the results of literature review which does not reveal a clear difference between group and individual treatments' outcomes for LBP, it is hypothesized that no difference will be found in treatment results for the two types of group treatments in the present study also, b) The assumption is that different distribution of therapeutic factors will be found in the two types of treatments (individual, group), C) Patients' sensation of how they have been helped will be connected to treatment results.
