Study of Opioid Use After Lumbar and Cervical Spine Surgery

Low Back PainOpiate Addiction1 more

The purpose of this project is to assess the impact of an educational video on the use of prescription opioid medication during a 6-month period following spine surgery. Subjects will be recruited from the pool of patients coming in for the pre-operative appointment prior to spine surgery. Patients that consent and enroll will be randomized to receive either a brief educational video at this appointment or usual care. Patients will be followed after surgery weekly for the first month, and then again at 6 months to determine their prescription opioid medication utilization patterns. Prescription data will also be pulled from electronic medical records.

Optimization of Spinal Manipulative Therapy Protocols

Low Back Pain

Research on spinal manipulative therapy for individuals with low back pain has been hampered by a lack of understanding of which of the physiologic effects produced by spinal manipulation are related to clinical benefit, and how these effects can be used to optimize treatment outcomes. Prior research has identified physiologic effects that relate to the clinical benefits from spinal manipulation treatment. The goal of this project is to examine strategies to use these effects to identify optimized treatment protocols. The results of this project will provide critical information for future clinical trials related to spinal manipulation.

Thoracic Spine Manipulation for Individuals With Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain

The purpose of this study is to determine the short-term effects of thoracic spine thrust manipulation on participants with low back pain. Participants in this study will be randomized to receive either the lower thoracic spinal manipulation and a standard set of exercises, or a sham manipulation and the same standard set of exercises. It is hypothesized that thoracic manipulation when combined with core strengthening exercises will have positive short term improvements in pain and function for patients with LBP as compared to a sham manipulation combined with core strengthening exercises.

Effectiveness of Group GDS and Individual GDS for Treatment of Low Back Pain in Primary Care

Subacute Nonspecific Low Back PainChronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain

A cluster, randomized, controlled clinical trial, where the hypothesis is that Group GDS and Individual GDS are effective in the treatment of nonspecific low back pain. The clusters will be the participating physiotherapy departments in primary care who treat patients with low back pain. In each physiotherapy department there will be 3 groups: education group, Group GDS and Individual GDS. Patients will be followed for 12 months. Variables will be: demographic, intensity of pain, disability, quality of life, patient satisfaction, medication intake for current episode, non-pharmacologic treatment for current episode, co-morbidity, diagnostic tests, sick leave, and habitual physical activity. The questionnaires to be used are: Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire, PI-NRS, VAS, SF-12 and EQ-5d.
