Pain Assessment and Quality of Life in Back Pain Patients: Role of Milnacipran

Back Pain

To show that patients with greater pain sensitivity will show greater improvement in their symptoms (self-reported pain intensity, mood, sleep, and quality of life) than those with lower pain sensitivity, based on QST, after taking milnacipran. To compare outcome differences (pain intensity, mood, activity interference, sleep, and side effects) with those patients who are either taking or not taking opioids for their pain 10 weeks after being prescribed milnacipran. To show that patients who are older, male, with more medical comorbidities, greater disability, and longer pain duration will report less improvement (pain, mood, sleep, health-related quality of life) and treatment satisfaction while taking milnacipran compared with others without such characteristics.

What Needle Diameter Should Physician Use When They Perform Lumbar Puncture ? A Randomized Controlled...

Post-lumbar Puncture HeadacheBackache

This study is intended to help guide the choice of needle diameter when performing a lumbar puncture. Smaller spinal needles have been shown to decrease rate of adverse events such as post-lumbar puncture headache and hearing loss. The main drawback to using smaller needles is diminished flow rate; some textbooks recommend using needles no smaller than 22 gauge because of the slow flow rate though others recommend smaller needles, namely 22-24 gauge. Some authors have described a successful use of spinal needles as small as 25 gauge when performing a lumbar puncture. The investigators do not believe that the flow-rate difference between 22 and 24 gauge needles is significant enough to justify using the larger needles. The investigators trial will compare the Whitacre 22 gauge and Whitacre 24 gauge needles for flow rate, and incidence of the known complications of pain during procedure and backache at 8 and 15 days post-procedure. The investigators will also look at whether smaller needles are associated with less pain during the procedure and less backache the next 2 weeks after the procedure.

The Association Between STarT Back Tool Subgroups and Postural Stability

Low Back PainPostural

Purpose This trial study the association between SBT subgroups and postural stability. It is theorized that cognitive impairment is more pronounced among patients in SBT group three compared to SBT group one and two. Therefore, it is hypothesized that challenging patients' balance will have a greater impact on the postural sway among patients in SBT group three compared to SBT group one and two in conditions where sensory information is reduced and cognitive load is increased.

Active Management for Low Back Pain for 6 to 8 Year Old Schoolchildren

Low Back Pain

The objective is to assess the effectiveness of a prevention campaign promoting active management in shifting beliefs in 6 to 8 year old schoolchildren. Subjects will be taken from a random sample of schools in Majorca, Spain: private, public and concerted. A 10 item questionnaire will be given to all children in that age group, to be answered in class on days 1, 14 and 97. Schools will be randomly assigned to the study and control groups. In the study group the students will get a Back Comic-Book (promotes active management) after the first assessment. The control group will have no other intervention than the questionnaire.

Preventive Intervention in Nursery School Teachers

Low Back PainNeck Pain

Childcare in nursery schools has been shown to be associated with an elevated prevalence of neck, shoulder, arm and low back disorders. The current evidence suggests that exercises seem to be the only effective preventive intervention. Thus the purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of an extension-oriented exercise program in preventing low back/neck pain and functional disability in nursery school teachers. In addition, the investigators also sought to identify the occurrence of musculoskeletal complaints in this category of workers.
