Virtual Reality and Pain Perception During Exercises for Patients With Chronic Non-specific Low...

Chronic Low Back Pain

Immersion in a virtual reality environment has been shown to reduce pain during a variety of painful medical procedures, such as wound care for burn patients and dental care. Often, serious games are used to distract patients from this painful procedures. Recently, serious games have also been developed for patients with low back pain. Because patients with low back pain frequently experience pain during exercises, the investigators hypothesize that exercising with serious games can reduce the pain intensity and the time spent thinking of pain during exercises. To test this hypothesis, the investigators will conduct a randomized controlled trial where two groups will be compared: the experimental group will perform one session of exercises with serious games, while the control group will perform one session of the same exercises without the serious games.

Pain Sensory Profile Changes Following Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain

Several cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that patients with chronic low back pain have higher levels of pain sensitivity (local and widespread) when compared to controls. It is unclear however, if improvements in pain and function are reflected in a decrease in the sensitivity of pain mechanisms. This study compares the pain sensory profile in patients with chronic low back pain before and after a period of physiotherapy treatment. To account for natural fluctuations in pain sensitivity, healthy age matched controls are also measured twice

BACk Pain in Elders in Norway (BACE-N)

Back Pain

An international Consortium (BACk pain in Elders: BACE) was established in 2008 in order to create standardised methodology for large cohort studies and share data on the burden of back pain in older people. BACE cohort studies have been established in several countries with the primary objective to establish the clinical course and burden of back pain in elderly, to identify prognostic factors for chronic back pain and disability, and to explore usual care provided in primary care. The BACE-N is a BACE cohort study conducted in Norway, including a broad network of clinicians covering general practitioners, physiotherapists and chiropractors working in the primary healthcare. The BACE-N project will provide new knowledge on prognosis of back-related disability and pain in elderly people who seek help in the primary healthcare, the clinical course of back pain over two follow-up years, including a thorough description of healthcare utilisation and their costs, and prognostic factors that influence good or poor prognosis for these people.
