Modic Changes and Associated Features in Southern European Chronic Low Back Pain Patients
Low Back PainTo assess: a) The prevalence of Modic changes and other findings on lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), among Spanish adult chronic LBP patients, b) Patient characteristics and radiological findings associated with Modic changes.
Prometra's Utilization in Mitigating Pain II
Intractable PainBack Pain3 moreIntrathecal infusion pumps are increasingly used to deliver analgesics for chronic intractable pain. The PUMP II trial is designed to evaluate the ongoing safety and efficacy of the new Prometra® Programmable Pump System for intrathecal administration of morphine sulfate to treat chronic intractable pain.
Association Between Low Back Pain and Quality of Sleep
Quality of SleepSubacute or Chronic Low Back Pain3 moreA prospective study to assess the association between the change in quality of sleep and the change in intensity of pain in Spanish patients seen for subacute or chronic low back pain. The objective is to determine the prevalence of sleep alterations, the association between quality of sleep and intensity of pain, degree of disability, intensity of catastrophizing and depression.
Assessment of Spinal Stability
Spine StabilityLow Back PainThe purpose of this study is to verify the existence of neuromuscular neutral zones(NNZs) in humans, and develop non-invasive techniques to measure intervertebral kinematics of the lumbar spine. The results will be used to accurately quantify NNZs in humans, and provide a foundation for clinical trials on low back pain patients using this methodology.
Large Array EMG Discriminability in Discogenic Low Back Pain
Discogenic PainHypothesis: Myoelectric patterns observed from the CERSR array during standardized testing are sensitive in identifying healthy subjects from patients with internal disc derangement and a positive discogram. A positive CT discogram is defined as one following the Dallas discogram protocol with abnormal disc morphology and reproduction of symptoms
Injection of an Autologous A2M Concentrate Alleviates Back Pain in FAC-positive Patients
Low Back PainA cartilage degradation product, the Fibronectin-Aggrecan complex (FAC), has been identified in patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD). Alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) can prevent the formation of the G3 domain of aggrecan, reducing the fibronectin-aggrecan G3 complex and therefore may be an efficacious treatment. The present study was designed to determine 1) the ability of autologous concentrated A2M to relieve back pain in patients with LBP from DDD and 2) the ability of FAC to predict the response to this biologic therapy. 24 patients with low back pain and MRI-concordant DDD had prospective evaluation. Oswestry disability index (ODI) and visual analog scores (VAS) were noted at baseline and at 3- and 6-month follow-up. Primary outcome of clinical improvement was defined as patients with both a decrease in VAS of at least 3 points and ODI >20 points. Molecular discography and delayed FAC analysis and injection of platelet poor plasma at the time of the procedure. Patients with FACT-positive assays were significantly more likely to show improvement in their VAS and ODI at follow-up.
Back Pain in Medical Students at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica
Back PainThe purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of back pain in preclinical second year and clinical fourth/fifth year medical students at the University of the West Indies; to assess their knowledge, attitude and practice of good spine health; and to determine the outcome of a standardize spine exercise program on one group, the clinical second year medical students, using a prospective randomized control design.
Genetic Predisposition for Chronic Non-specific Low Back Pain
Low Back PainPatients with inflammatory back pain were shown to differ from healthy controls in genotype of the Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which regulates vasoconstriction/-dilatation. The aim of this study is to investigate whether genetic reduction of muscle perfusion might be a pathophysiological pathway of how genes influence chronic non-specific low back pain (LBP).
Pain Inhibition and Facilitation in Recurrent Low Back Pain
Recurrent Low Back PainHealthyThis study evaluates psychophysical measures of pain inhibition and facilitation, along with cortical responses to different sensory stimuli, in patients with recurrent low back pain and matched healthy individuals.
Spinal Kinematics Variability
Chronic Low Back PainThis study will test the within and between day variability of spinal kinematics and trunk muscle activity in healthy subjects and chronic low back pain patients during various daily-life activities.
