Effectiveness of Cranberry Ingestion on Bacterial Adhesion: An Adjunct Study

Asymptomatic Bacteriuria

This study is to help determine if drinking cranberry juice can decrease risk for asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB). ASB occurs when there are bacteria in the urine without any symptoms. It will also see if there is a difference in this effect between pregnant and non-pregnant women. This research project is also designed to see what happens to bacterial binding to the lining of the bladder after drinking cranberry juice when special problems occur with pregnancy such as diabetes (a sugar metabolism problem) or ASB is already occurring.

Efficacy of BLASTX in Catheter Associated Bacteriuria Versus Standard of Care (SOC)

Urinary Tract Infections

This is a 2-week, single-site, randomized study in adults requiring short-term (≤ 14 days) catheterization. Subjects will be randomized 1:1 to either the biofilm disrupting gel (BLASTX) or SOC (McKesson Jelly) lubricated catheters. Urine and/or catheter DNA analysis will be obtained at catheter insertion, 2, 5, 7 and 14 days after catheterization.

the Use of Fosfomycin as a Single Dose Oral Treatment of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria

Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most commonly occurring bacterial infections in women, Asymptomatic bacteriuria (AB) is a common complication during pregnancy, with a prevalence of 2-10%. It has been associated with a greater incidence of symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI), as well as foetal and obstetric complications. Appropriate treatment reduces the incidence of UTI by 80-90%, as well as the risk of a premature birth and low-birth-weight baby Fosfomycin trometamol (Monuril) is approved in numerous countries worldwide, including various European countries and the USA, mainly for the treatment of uncomplicated UTIs

Bacteriuria Eradication Through Probiotics

Bacteriuria

Many children who catheterize their bladders because of spina bifida or other neurologic disorders have bacteriuria. This can lead to urinary tract infections by bacteria from the gut which colonize the vagina and are carried into the bladder during catheter passage. We seek to test whether oral administration of probiotic bacteria can "displace" these vagina-derived uropathogens and reduce or prevent bacteriuria in girls with spina bifida who empty their bladders through catheterization.

Administration of Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Transperineal Prostate Biopsy in Cipto Mangunkusumo...

Prostate CancerProstate Biopsy4 more

This randomized controlled trial aims to compare the rate of perioperative infection complications in transperineal prostate biopsy between the group that receives prophylactic antibiotic and the group that receives placebo. The types of infection studied included bacteriuria, urinary tract infection (UTI), UTI with fever (febrile UTI), and sepsis. This study hypothesized that the administration of prophylactic antibiotics during transperineal prostate biopsy would result in lower rates of perioperative infection complications.

Effect of Active Drain Line Clearance on Catheter-Associated Bacteriuria

Critical IllnessBurns3 more

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are the most common nosocomial infections in critically ill patients and are responsible for high morbidity rates, increased hospital stays and associated costs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether active drain line clearance by the Accuryn Monitoring System reduces the incidence of CAUTI in hospitalized patients requiring catheters.

Bladder Lavage as Decontamination Method for Asymptomatic Bacteriuria With Uropathogens in Catheterized...

Catheter Related Infections

In patients with advanced multiple sclerosis, permanent urinary catheters are often used to manage the urinary incontinence and bladder emptying problems. These catheters will lead to urinary tract infection, blocking of the catheter etc.. Especially infections with certain bacteria such as proteus, enterobacteriaceae and ESBL producing enterobacteriaceae and pseudomonas can pose a problem for the hospital infection control and for the patient. This study wants to evaluate the potential role of regular bladder lavage with saline, a solution of betadine, an acid solution of acetic acid and of URotainer Twin Suby G ( Braun)in the decontamination of these bladders and the prevention of clinically relevant urinary tract infections.

Urinary Tract InfectionBacteriuria1 more

The investigators hypothesize that antibiotic therapy for asymptomatic bacteriuria in renal transplant patients does not have impact on the development of symptomatic urinary tract infection (UTI) or progression of renal impairment in patients during the first year after transplantation.

E. Coli 83972 Induced Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (ABU) in Patients With Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections...

Urinary Tract Infection

This study tests the following hypothesis: Does induced asymptomatic bacteriuria (E. coli 83972) protect against symptomatic urinary tract infections in individuals with bladder emptying dysfunctions and prone to recurrent infection episodes? The study is performed using a double-blind randomized study protocol with a cross-over, with re-inoculations being patient-blinded (phase 1). After patients have fulfilled the cross-over, those who have had bacteriuria or placebo-periods < 12 months will be subjected to additional patient blinded inoculations (phase 2). During the entire study (phase 1+2) the study-team and the patients are unaware of urine culture results.

Prevention of Nosocomial E. Coli Infections After Placement of an Indwelling Catheter During Pelvic...

Cross InfectionBacteriuria

Indwelling urinary catheters are a primary site for nosocomial infections. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anti-adhesive properties of Cranberry type A pro anthocyanidine gel capsules in the prevention Escherichia coli infections on indwelling urinary catheters placed in patients following pelvic surgery. The investigators primary working hypothesis is that cranberry treatment decreases E. coli colonization on indwelling urinary catheters, thus preventing nosocomial urinary infections following pelvic surgery.
