A System for Preference Assessment in Mental Health

It is important that individuals with serious mental illness make informed choices among alternative healthcare treatments based on their preferences. However, at present, individuals' preferences are often not being elicited, nor used to guide which treatments are made available. In this pilot project, the investigators implement and evaluate a computerized method for assessing treatment preferences of individuals with schizophrenia. The investigators use weight management treatments for this initial test of the system. If this assessment method is found to predict treatment use and satisfaction, it can be used to guide implementation of treatments that improve outcomes while meeting individuals' preferences.

Electronic Cigarettes in Smokers With Mental Illness

People with mental illness are more likely to smoke and are more severely addicted to nicotine than the general population. As a result, the number of deaths related to tobacco is higher. Smoking is highly addictive because it delivers nicotine very quickly. Research studies show that people who use nicotine replacement therapies (such us patches, gums, etc) are more likely to quit smoking than those who try to quit without using these nicotine products. Recently a new electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS), also known as electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is rapidly gaining popularity. Electronic cigarettes are devices that mimic traditional cigarettes and deliver nicotine but do not carry the dangerous chemicals contained in tobacco cigarettes. Given the increasing popularity of e-cigs, there is an urgent need to improve our understanding of both the potential benefits and risks of e-cigs use in people with serious mental illness. In this pilot we propose inviting 50 people with schizophrenia (or schizophrenia-related disorder) who are not intending to quit smoking in the near future to take part in a study in which we will provide 6-weeks of free e-cigs, followed by a 4-week period in which they will not receive free e-cigs and we monitor which products participants choose, and a final 24-week follow-up visit. During the 24-week study period we will assess the use of e-cigs and tobacco cigarettes, the exposure to nicotine and tobacco toxicants, nicotine withdrawal symptoms, the changes in respiratory symptoms and psychiatric symptoms as well as the e-cigs perceived benefits and risks.

Mental Disorders

The purpose of this study is to learn more about how patients and healthcare providers interact in order to improve shared decision making. The investigators plan to test an intervention with two separate educational components-one for patients and one for providers-designed to encourage patients to ask questions and increase their level of involvement in their own care, while simultaneously training providers to be more receptive to patients' questions and concerns. Patients in the intervention group will receive three short (30-45 minute) trainings focused on developing and asking questions and will be interviewed three times over the course of the intervention to see how it has affected the quality of their care. Providers receiving the intervention will participate in three separate trainings, including a 12-hour group workshop, an additional two hour training, and six hours of individual instruction, including personalized feedback based on three audio-recorded patient visits. Previous studies looking at patient engagement and involvement in decision-making have shown that increased engagement is linked with improved outcomes, but that providers are sometimes not prepared to develop a collaborative relationship with patients. The investigators think that training both patients and providers to work together and communicate more effectively will improve quality of care and increase patient satisfaction more than interventions that focus on only one side of the clinical encounter. One of the major goals in studying patient-provider communication is to improve shared decision-making and see how it contributes to racial and ethnic disparities in mental health care, since minority patients have been shown to be less involved in care and have been shown to be perceived and treated differently by providers.

Multifamily Group Psychoeducation for SUD's in Turkey

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of multi-family group psychoeducation (MFGP) on the families of people living with a diagnosis of substance abuse disorder on patients and their families. It has been reported that families are affected by substance-related disorders. Families that are the target of psychoeducational practices for families are defined as follows: "Family" is a relative, biological family member, partner, close friend, or any other support person or a person who sees herself/himself as the patient's family. In most studies, it has been stated that including family members in the patient's treatment provides additional benefits to substance use services and makes long-term recovery more likely. Studies have found that MFGP is associated with fewer relapses and hospitalizations, improved family well-being, increased participation in vocational rehabilitation, higher employment rates, and reduced costs of care. Multifamily psychoeducation aims to increase the family's knowledge about substance use disorders and to include them in the recovery process. Study Design:The intervention involves 8-week MFGP for families. During the 8 sessions, it was planned to conduct face-to-face psychoeducational group work, with each session lasting 75 minutes on average. The MFGP to be covered during 8 sessions was created by evaluating MFGP modules from 3 different sources. Intervention protocols included these subjects: First session: Psychoeducation on Substance-Abuse Disorders Second session: Effects of Addiction on the Family Third session: illness management Fourth session: Supporting Recovery Fifth session: Improving Stress Coping Skills/Stress Management Sixth session: Developing Problem-Solving Skills Seventh session: Strengthening the Family Eighth session: Working with Stigma Study population: Families of people suffering from substance abuse disorders were studied. Expected outcomes: An increase in general and social functionality, a decrease in depression, anxiety, and self-stigma, an increase in quality of life, and treatment compliance are expected for patients. For families, it is expected that depression, anxiety, self-stigma, and caregiving burnout decrease, funcitonalty and quality of life increases and people gain skills to cope with stress.

Nurse-led Psycho-education Program for People With First-onset Mental Illness (APN-PEP)

The study aims to test the effectiveness of a nurse-led psycho-education program based on motivational interviewing technique for Chinese patients with first-onset mental illness over a 12-month follow-up. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted with 180 Chinese patients with schizophrenia newly referred to one outpatient clinic in Hong Kong. They will be randomly assigned to either the eight-session nurse-led psycho-education program or usual psychiatric outpatient care (both n=90). The patients' general and mental health, illness insight, self-efficacy, services utilization, and hospitalization rates were measured at recruitment and one week, six months and 12 months post-intervention. Note: Those who were approached in the clinic and not eligible to participate in this trial will be invited to participate in another controlled trial. The controlled trial tests the effects of a self-help problem-solving based bibliotherapy program (SPBB) for Chinese family caregivers in recent onset psychosis (not more than 1 year onset) at one psychiatric clinic, in comparison to routine outpatient service and family support (control group) for 116 randomly selected family caregivers of outpatients with psychotic disorders over a 6-month follow-up.)

Impact of a Mental Health Curriculum for High School Students on Knowledge and Stigma

This study examines the effectiveness of a school based mental health literacy intervention for high school students, on improving mental health knowledge and reducing stigma. Twenty-four high schools in the regional area of Ottawa, Canada were randomly assigned to either the curriculum or control condition at a two to one ratio. The educational curriculum was integrated within grade 11 and 12 Provincial "Healthy Living" courses, delivered by teachers, and replaced existing educational content on mental health.
