Afferent Neurocardiac Signals, Cue Reactivity, and Cognitive Control

Binge Drinking

Conscious attempts to regulate alcohol use are often undermined by automatic attention and arousal processes activated by alcohol cues, as well as by diminished ability to inhibit in-the-moment behaviors. The current study will examine whether a brief behavioral intervention of slow breathing paced at a resonance frequency of the cardiovascular system can interrupt automatic alcohol cue reactivity and enhance cognitive control in binge drinkers. Results from the proposed study may provide new prevention and intervention targets to interrupt unhealthy drinking behaviors.

Alcohol and Neural Cardiovascular Control in Binge Drinkers

Binge Drinking

This study evaluates the impact of evening alcohol consumption on sympathetic activity and baroreflex function in binge drinkers. Our central hypothesis is that evening binge alcohol consumption will lead to sympathetic overactivity and blunted baroreflex function.

Behavioral Alcohol Responses (BAR) Study

Alcohol DrinkingAlcohol Use Disorder4 more

This study aims to identify risk factors that prospectively predict alcohol problems in young adults.

STUN (STop UNhealthy) Alcohol Use Now! Implementing Evidence-Based Services for Unhealthy Alcohol...

Risky Health BehaviorDrinking5 more

STUN Alcohol Use Now is an intervention designed to use primary care practice support services (practice facilitation) to help small to medium-size practices (10 or fewer providers) identify and provide services for people with unhealthy alcohol use. The original recruitment goal was 135 primary care practices in North Carolina, which we were unable to meet due to pandemic-related barriers.

Substance Use Screening to Encourage Behavior Change Among Young People in Primary Care

Substance UseBinge Drinking2 more

This study evaluates whether completing a short screening questionnaire about health behaviours in the waiting room before a primary care consultation decreases excessive substance use in young people aged 14 to 24 years. Young people consulting a primary care physician will randomly receive either a questionnaire about substance use or a questionnaire about physical activity. They will be contacted again 3, 6 and 12 months later and asked to complete a questionnaire about substance use. The proportion of young people with excessive substance use in each group will be compared. The researchers hypothesise that at three months this proportion will be lower in the group of young people having completed the initial questionnaire about substance use when compared to the group having completed the questionnaire about physical activity.

Alcohol Consumption, Intention Implementation and Mindfulness Meditation (ADUC-Volet 3 " Prevention...

Binge DrinkingAlcohol Drinking

The emergence of new problematic alcohol consumption practices among young people requires new dynamics in prevention strategies. In this context, the ADUC project (Alcohol and Drugs at the University of Caen) aims to develop a better understanding of alcohol consumption, and in particular the practice of binge drinking (BD), in order to develop relevant and adapted prevention tools. The ALCOMEDIIT study (IRESP funding; Agreement 20II31-00 - ADUC part 3) is a randomized controlled trial that focuses on the specific determinant of impulsivity. The main objective of this experiment in social psychology is to validate a program for the prevention of BD practices based on motivational interviewing (MI) associated with intention implementation (II) and mindfulness meditation (MBM) in a student environment.

Say When: Targeting Heavy Alcohol Use With Naltrexone Among MSM

Binge DrinkingHIV

This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 120 binge-drinking MSM to 12 weeks of naltrexone 50mg, to be taken in anticipation of heavy drinking. Ethnically and racially diverse participants will be recruited using Respondent Driven Sampling as well as active field recruitment. MSM will be seen weekly for alcohol-metabolite urine testing, study drug dispensing, and brief counseling for alcohol use. Safety assessments and behavioral surveys will be completed monthly.

Cognitive Behavioral Treatment to Reduce Alcohol Use Among HIV-Infected Kenyans

Binge DrinkingAlcohol Abuse2 more

This study will determine whether a cognitive behavioral intervention that demonstrates strong evidence in the U.S. of reducing alcohol use is effective when delivered by paraprofessionals in Kenya and compared against a usual care support group.

Buproprion for Binge Drinking

Alcohol Abuse

The present proposal is an innovative and translational clinical trial derived from exciting preclinical findings to test the hypothesis that treatment with the melanocortin activator bupropion can reduce binge drinking in humans. Furthermore, pilot data on moderating effects of coexisting nicotine use on the efficacy of bupropion for binge drinking population will be obtained. Evidence for an efficacy signal with good tolerability with this FDA approved medication would form the foundation to conduct a well-powered Phase II b trial. The development of an effective pharmacotherapy for binge drinking would be a significant clinical advance. .
