Emotion Regulation in Binge Eating and Purging Among Adolescents

Binge EatingPurging (Eating Disorders)

The study will examine the neural and behavioral correlates of emotion regulation in adolescents engaging in binge eating and/or purging and healthy adolescents. Furthermore, it will look at the influence of executive function on emotion regulation in this population. This study will allow us to gain further understanding of the neural basis of emotion regulation in this age group. Moreover, this study supports the need to develop new treatment approaches based on a better understanding of the brain processes associated with eating disorders.

Neural Bases of Multiple Forms of Self-regulatory Control in Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa

The purpose of this study is to investigate areas of the brain responsible for self-regulation in adult women who have never had an eating disorder with women who have bulimia nervosa. More specifically, investigators are interested in changes in brain activation (e.g., changes in blood flow and oxygen use) when inhibiting responses and regulating emotions. Data collection will rely on a technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Binge-Eating Genetics Initiative (BEGIN) - Dynamical Systems Approach

The Binge Eating Genetics Initiative (BEGIN) is an observational study where individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN) complete assessments about eating disorder history, current disordered eating behavior, and mood. Participants also provide active data on binge eating, purging, nutrition, and cognitions using Recovery Record on the Apple Watch. Passive sensor data are collected via native applications over a 30-day period in 1000 individuals with BED or BN. Investigators will combine longitudinal passive (Apple Watch) and active (Recovery Record) data to predict when patients are at high risk of binge eating or purging. Results will enable the deployment of real-time, in-the-moment, personalized signaling of impending binge or purge episodes that will interrupt automatic behaviors and empower patients to exert control over binge eating and purging by engaging in therapeutic alternatives.

Follow-Up Extension to the Family Study of Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder

This study involves a 2.5 and 5 year follow-up interview for individuals who participated in the initial family study of binge eating disorder. The study includes individuals with and without eating disorder as well as their first degree relatives. As part of the study, participants will be interviewed about their current psychiatric and medical symptoms, their blood pressure will be measured, and laboratory specimens will be obtained.

Eating Behavior in Adolescents

This study will explore the eating habits of adolescents and determine if eating behavior is linked to genetics. Healthy adolescents between 13 and 17 years of age may be eligible for this study. Candidates come to the NIH Clinical Center at 8:00 AM to be screened with the following: Medical history and brief physical examination, including height, weight, and body fat measurements. Body fat is measured using a device called a Bod Pod. The adolescent sits inside the device for about 5 minutes and the machine determines body fat by measuring air movement. The adolescent must wear a tight-fitting swimsuit for this test. Urine test to look for sugar or protein in the urine and to test for pregnancy in females. Blood tests for routine chemistries and for gene studies related to eating behaviors. Questionnaires and interviews about the adolescent s general health and eating habits. Acclimatization to test meal conditions for the study. The adolescent is given a breakfast shake to drink. Participants come to the NIH Clinical Center at 10:30 AM for laboratory meal testing. At this visit, the adolescent does the following: Eats food from a buffet of everyday foods that most kids eat. Fills out questionnaires. Tastes and rates the flavor of a variety of snack foods.

Binge-Eating Disorder

People who suffer from binge eating disorder experience recurrent episodes of binge eating.During these episodes, they consume an unusually large amount of food in a short amount of time and experience loss of control over eating. However, why such binge eating episodes occur is still largely unknown. This makes it difficult to develop targeted treatments. In this project, the experimenters are investigating the brain mechanisms that give rise to the disorder. They hypothesize that the binge eating episodes are due to an increased variability in reward processing, which they will assess repeatedly over days. They will test this hypothesis using mathematical models based on behavioural and MRI measurements that are related to the processing of rewards.

The overarching intention of the Eating Disorder Genetics Initiative (EDGI) is to lay the foundation for all future genomic discovery in eating disorders--anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED)--by exploring both genetic and behavioral factors. To do this, information will be collected from 4000 people who have provided DNA samples for the Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI) and the same information and DNA will be collected from an additional 16,000 people. The goal is to better understand eating disorders and how they relate to each other so that better treatments can be developed.

Self-regulatory Control and Eating: A Neuroimaging Study of Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa

The purpose of this study will be to replicate previous findings of deficits in prefrontal activation during response inhibition tasks in bulimia nervosa and extend these findings by demonstrating similar deficiencies in activity during a functional behavioral task that requires the inhibition of eating. Findings from this study will potentially help to elucidate the underlying neural mechanisms of bulimia nervosa, and thus inform treatment and prevention efforts.

Evaluation of Art-therapy on Alexithymia in Patients Suffering From Anorexia Nervosa and From Bulimia...

Anorexia Nervosa/Bulimia

Alexithymia is often found in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa or from bulimia. Art-therapy is widely used in this indication without there is a study in the literature assessing it. ALEXART is an observational prospective multicenter cohort pilot study, assessing the effect at 3 months of art therapy on alexithymia, in patients presenting anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
